Poche band sono riuscite a preservare la propria identità nel corso degli anni come i Masterplan. Guidati da Roland Grapow, i veterani del power metal tedesco tornano con “Metalmorphosis”, pubblicato da Frontiers Music, un album che unisce le melodie caratteristiche della band e i riff potenti con l’esperienza maturata in oltre due decenni di carriera. Abbiamo incontrato Roland per parlare della realizzazione del disco, del significato dietro il titolo, del rinnovato slancio della band e della strada che si apre davanti a questo entusiasmante nuovo capitolo.

Prima di tutto, Roland, grazie per aver dedicato un po’ di tempo a questa intervista con Il Raglio Del Mulo, e complimenti per l’uscita di “Metalmorphosis”, un album che segna il vostro attesissimo ritorno dopo oltre un decennio da “Novum Initium”. Ripensando a questo lungo percorso, quali emozioni avete provato nel momento in cui avete capito che questo nuovo capitolo dei Masterplan era finalmente pronto per essere condiviso con il mondo?
Pubblicare “Metalmorphosis” è stato un momento davvero speciale ed emozionante per tutti noi. Dopo così tanti anni non volevamo tornare tanto per farlo, volevamo riuscirci con un album che rappresentasse davvero ciò che i Masterplan sono oggi. Quando tutto è stato completato abbiamo capito che era arrivato il momento giusto. Vedere la risposta così positiva dei fan ha ripagato completamente tutto il duro lavoro svolto e siamo davvero entusiasti di questo nuovo capitolo.

L’idea della trasformazione sembra essere profondamente radicata sia nel titolo che nello spirito di “Metalmorphosis”. Al di là dell’ovvio significato legato al cambiamento, quale tipo di evoluzione personale e artistica rappresenta questo album per la band in questa fase della vostra carriera?
“Metalmorphosis” riflette il nostro percorso sia come musicisti sia come persone. Nel corso degli anni abbiamo accumulato esperienza, affrontato sfide e siamo cresciuti sotto molti aspetti, e credo che tutto questo si possa percepire nella musica. L’album rimane fedele al classico sound dei Masterplan, ma mostra anche una band più matura e sicura di sé. Per noi significa accogliere il cambiamento senza perdere quell’identità e quella passione che hanno sempre definito i Masterplan.

Hai raccontato che parte del materiale era rimasto in attesa per anni prima di trovare la sua forma definitiva. Quando si lavora su idee nate in periodi così diversi della propria vita, come si fa a far sì che tutto finisca per appartenere allo stesso universo musicale ed emotivo?
Alcune di queste idee esistevano già da parecchio tempo, ma le belle canzoni non hanno una data di scadenza. Quando abbiamo iniziato a lavorare seriamente all’album, abbiamo riascoltato ogni brano con orecchie nuove e lo abbiamo riarrangiato affinché si inserisse perfettamente nella visione complessiva di “Metalmorphosis”. La produzione, le interpretazioni e l’energia che abbiamo messo nelle registrazioni hanno legato tutto insieme e, alla fine, il risultato è stato un album completo e perfettamente coerente.

Brani come “The Call”, “Through The Storm” e la title track esplorano atmosfere e messaggi molto diversi tra loro, passando dalla spiritualità alla resilienza fino alla pura energia dell’heavy metal. C’è stata la volontà di realizzare un album che rappresentasse le molte anime dei Masterplan, invece di seguire un’unica direzione stilistica?
Assolutamente sì. Non abbiamo mai voluto limitarci a un solo stato d’animo o a un unico stile. I Masterplan hanno sempre cercato di unire melodie potenti, riff pesanti e grande intensità emotiva, quindi è stato naturale che “Metalmorphosis” esplorasse temi e atmosfere differenti. Volevamo che l’album accompagnasse l’ascoltatore in un viaggio, pur suonando come un autentico disco dei Masterplan dall’inizio alla fine.

A proposito di “Through The Storm”, la storia del concerto su una metal cruise in mezzo a un mare in tempesta sembra uscita da un classico road movie. Dopo decenni trascorsi sui palchi di tutto il mondo, momenti come questo vi ricordano ancora perché l’heavy metal rimane uno stile di vita e una comunità davvero unici?
Assolutamente! Esperienze come questa ti ricordano cosa rappresenti davvero l’heavy metal. Non importa quali siano il meteo o le circostanze, i fan sono sempre lì con una passione e un’energia incredibili, e le band danno tutto ciò che hanno in cambio. Sono momenti che creano ricordi indelebili e dimostrano che l’heavy metal è molto più di un semplice genere musicale: è una comunità mondiale e un autentico stile di vita.

I Masterplan sono nati dal desiderio di costruire qualcosa di nuovo dopo la tua esperienza negli Helloween, ma nel corso degli anni la band ha sviluppato un’identità assolutamente inconfondibile. Guardandoti indietro oggi, cosa pensi definisca la vera essenza dei Masterplan, quella firma sonora che i fan riconoscono immediatamente come vostra?
Credo che sia la combinazione di melodie forti, riff potenti e tanta emozione. Abbiamo sempre cercato di scrivere canzoni che fossero allo stesso tempo pesanti e memorabili, senza seguire le mode del momento. Naturalmente ognuno di noi porta con sé le proprie influenze, ma l’obiettivo è sempre stato quello di creare musica che suonasse inequivocabilmente come Masterplan. Penso che sia proprio questo ciò che i nostri fan riconoscono e apprezzano di più.

Album come “Masterplan”, “Aeronautics”, “Time To Be King” e ora “Metalmorphosis” rappresentano epoche diverse della band. Durante la scrittura del nuovo disco sono riaffiorati consapevolmente elementi di quei lavori precedenti, magari in modi che persino gli ascoltatori di lunga data potrebbero non cogliere immediatamente?
Credo che ogni album dei Masterplan abbia lasciato il proprio segno su di noi, quindi, in questo senso, sì. Non abbiamo cercato deliberatamente di ricreare il passato, ma le melodie, il modo di scrivere e lo spirito che i fan conoscono dai nostri lavori precedenti fanno naturalmente parte di ciò che siamo. “Metalmorphosis” raccoglie tutte queste esperienze e le unisce, continuando però a guardare avanti piuttosto che indietro.

La vostra recente collaborazione con Frontiers Music ha aperto un capitolo completamente nuovo per la band. Al di là della pubblicazione del disco, questo nuovo ambiente ha cambiato il vostro approccio creativo o acceso ambizioni che durante gli anni lontani dallo studio sembravano forse irrealizzabili?
Lavorare con Frontiers è stata un’esperienza davvero molto positiva. Hanno dimostrato grande entusiasmo nei confronti della band e hanno sostenuto concretamente la nostra visione per “Metalmorphosis”. Avere un supporto di questo tipo ti dà una motivazione e una fiducia ancora maggiori nel guardare al futuro. Ci rende davvero entusiasti all’idea di creare nuova musica e di tornare sul palco per portare queste nuove canzoni ai nostri fan.

Dopo il ritorno con “Metalmorphosis” e il tour europeo, i fan dovrebbero considerare questo album come un glorioso comeback oppure come il primo passo di un futuro molto più stabile e attivo per i Masterplan negli anni a venire?
Per noi “Metalmorphosis” rappresenta decisamente l’inizio di un nuovo capitolo, non semplicemente un ritorno. La risposta dei fan è stata fantastica e ci ha dato ancora più motivazione per continuare ad andare avanti. Vogliamo continuare a scrivere nuova musica, suonare dal vivo e fare in modo che i Masterplan rimangano una band attiva ancora per molti anni.

Few bands have managed to preserve their identity through the years quite like Masterplan. Led by Roland Grapow, the German power metal veterans return with “Metalmorphosis”, released via Frontiers Music, an album that blends the band’s trademark melodies and heavy riffs with the experience gained over more than two decades. We caught up with Roland to discuss the making of the record, the meaning behind its title, the band’s renewed momentum, and the road that lies ahead for this exciting new chapter.

First of all, Roland, thank you for taking the time to speak with us at Il Raglio Del Mulo, and congratulations on the release of “Metalmorphosis”, a record that marks your long-awaited return after more than a decade since “Novum Initium”. Looking back at this journey, what emotions did you experience when you finally realized that this new chapter of Masterplan was truly ready to be shared with the world?
Thank you very much. Releasing “Metalmorphosis” was a very special and emotional moment for all of us. After so many years, we didn’t want to come back just for the sake of it, we wanted to return with an album that truly represents Masterplan today. Once everything was finished, we knew the time was right. Seeing the positive response from the fans has made all the hard work completely worthwhile, and we’re very excited about this new chapter.

The idea of transformation seems to be deeply embedded in both the title and the spirit of “Metalmorphosis”. Beyond the obvious meaning of change, what kind of personal and artistic evolution does this album represent for the band at this stage of your career?
“Metalmorphosis” reflects both our journey as musicians and as individuals. Over the years, we’ve gained experience, faced challenges, and grown in many ways, and I think all of that can be heard in the music. The album stays true to the classic Masterplan sound, but it also shows a more mature and confident band. For us, it’s about embracing change while keeping the identity and passion that have always defined Masterplan.

You mentioned that some of the material had been waiting for years before finding its final form. When working with ideas that originated in different periods of your lives, how did you ensure that everything ultimately belonged to the same musical and emotional universe?
Some of the ideas had been around for quite a while, but good songs don’t have an expiration date. When we started working on the album seriously, we revisited every track with fresh ears and arranged them to fit the overall vision of “Metalmorphosis”. The production, the performances, and the energy we brought into the recordings tied everything together, so in the end it all felt like one complete and cohesive album.

Songs like “The Call”, “Through The Storm”, and the title track each explore very different moods and messages, from spirituality to resilience and pure heavy metal energy. Was there a conscious effort to create an album that reflects the many faces of Masterplan rather than following a single stylistic direction?
Absolutely. We never wanted to limit ourselves to just one mood or style. Masterplan has always been about combining powerful melodies, heavy riffs, and emotional depth, so it felt natural for “Metalmorphosis” to explore different themes and atmospheres. We wanted the album to take the listener on a journey while still sounding like a true Masterplan record from beginning to end.

Speaking of “Through The Storm”, the story behind performing on a metal cruise in terrible weather sounds like something straight out of a classic road movie. After decades on stage, do moments like that still remind you why heavy metal remains such a unique lifestyle and community?
Absolutely! Experiences like that remind you what heavy metal is really all about. No matter the weather or the circumstances, the fans are there with incredible passion and energy, and the bands give everything in return. Those moments create memories you’ll never forget, and they show that heavy metal is much more than music, it’s a worldwide community and a way of life.

Masterplan was born from a desire to build something new after your time in Helloween, yet over the years the band developed its own unmistakable identity. Looking back today, what do you think defines the true essence of Masterplan that fans immediately recognize as your signature sound?
I think it’s the combination of strong melodies, powerful riffs, and a lot of emotion. We’ve always focused on writing songs that are both heavy and memorable, without following trends. Of course, everyone brings their own influences, but the goal has always been to create music that sounds unmistakably like Masterplan. I think that’s what our fans recognize and appreciate the most.

Albums such as “Masterplan”, “Aeronautics”, “Time To Be King”, and now “Metalmorphosis” all represent different eras of the band. Are there elements from those previous records that consciously resurfaced during the writing process, perhaps in ways even longtime listeners might not immediately notice?
I think every Masterplan album has left its mark on us, so in that sense, yes. We didn’t deliberately try to recreate the past, but the melodies, songwriting, and overall spirit that fans know from our earlier albums are naturally part of who we are. “Metalmorphosis” brings all those experiences together while still looking forward rather than backward.

Your recent partnership with Frontiers Music has opened a completely new chapter for the band. Beyond the release itself, has this fresh environment changed your creative mindset or inspired ambitions that perhaps seemed unrealistic during the years away from the studio?
Working with Frontiers has been a very positive experience. They’ve shown great enthusiasm for the band and have really supported our vision for “Metalmorphosis”. That kind of backing gives you extra motivation and confidence to look ahead. It definitely makes us excited about creating more music and getting back on stage to bring these new songs to the fans.

After the successful return with “Metalmorphosis” and the European tour, should fans see this album as a triumphant comeback or as the first step of a much broader and more active future for Masterplan in the years ahead?
We definitely see “Metalmorphosis” as the beginning of a new chapter, not just a comeback. The response from the fans has been fantastic, and it has given us even more motivation to keep moving forward. We want to continue writing new music, playing live, and making sure Masterplan remains an active band for many years to come.
