Con una carriera alle spalle che ha contribuito a definire il sound dell’hard rock melodico, Jim Peterik continua a dimostrare che passione, melodia e capacità di raccontare storie sono elementi senza tempo. In occasione dell’uscita di “Unbridled”, l’ottavo album in studio dei Pride Of Lions, pubblicato da Frontiers Music Srl, il leggendario songwriter e musicista parla di resilienza, libertà, esperienze personali e dello spirito indomabile che mantiene viva questa band dopo oltre vent’anni.
Innanzitutto, grazie per aver trovato il tempo di parlare con noi e benvenuto su Il Raglio Del Mulo. Con “Unbridled”, i Pride Of Lions tornano con il loro ottavo album in studio, dimostrando ancora una volta perché la band è rimasta per oltre due decenni uno dei nomi più rispettati del rock melodico. Guardando al percorso che ha portato alla realizzazione di questo disco, cosa rende questo album speciale ai tuoi occhi?
Ciao Giuseppe! Spero che tu stia alla grande. Per me, ciò che spicca è il modo in cui Toby e io continuiamo a spingere i confini di ciò che i Pride Of Lions rappresentano: forza e resilienza.
Il titolo “Unbridled” richiama immediatamente concetti come libertà, determinazione e il desiderio di andare avanti senza limiti. Cosa rappresenta questo titolo per la band e come riflette i temi esplorati nell’album?
“Unbridled” rappresenta la libertà. Dall’incredibile intro di chitarra di Mike Aquino fino alla fine, siamo davvero liberi e senza briglie!
Le dodici canzoni di “Unbridled” accompagnano gli ascoltatori attraverso emozioni diverse, dagli inni pieni di energia ai momenti più riflessivi. Quando l’album ha preso forma, avevate già una visione chiara del suo sviluppo complessivo oppure la storia si è rivelata naturalmente man mano che completavate i brani?
Ottima domanda, amico mio. Avevamo ovviamente una traccia guida, mantenendo fede alla missione dei POL: motivare le persone a darsi una mossa e ad agire. Non dare la colpa agli altri. Sii il cambiamento.
Hai costruito una straordinaria eredità come autore, mentre i Pride Of Lions hanno sviluppato negli anni un’identità inconfondibile. Come funziona oggi il processo creativo all’interno della band e come si sono evoluti i vostri punti di forza individuali fino a creare quella chimica che definisce i Pride Of Lions?
Siamo partiti nel 2003 con un foglio bianco. Quando Serafino e Mario della Frontiers sono volati a Nashville per incontrare Toby e me, Mario ha guardato Toby e ha detto: “Serafino, è un bambino”. E Serafino ha risposto: “Sì, ma quel bambino sa CANTARE!!!”. Il resto è storia.
“I’ll Be Your Rock” è un sentito tributo alla lealtà e alla condivisione di una vita insieme, ispirato dal tuo matrimonio. Quanto è importante per i Pride Of Lions bilanciare storie profondamente personali con quei temi universali che sono sempre stati al centro del rock melodico?
È proprio quello che cerchiamo sempre di fare: intrecciare le nostre storie personali nelle nostre canzoni. L’amore è universale. Karen e io festeggeremo 54 anni di matrimonio il 2 settembre. Toby e Chrystina hanno una storia molto simile, anche se sono molto più giovani di me. Sono una squadra incredibile.
Nel corso della vostra carriera avete sempre proposto melodie memorabili senza inseguire le mode musicali. Nella scena rock odierna, dove gli stili cambiano rapidamente, cosa ti spinge a rimanere fedele alla tua visione musicale mantenendo comunque ogni nuovo album fresco e attuale?
Grazie per queste parole. Non cerco mai di reinventare la ruota, ma cerco sempre di darle una rotazione diversa: inserire una nuova svolta melodica attraverso una progressione di accordi intelligente. Stesso cavallo, sella diversa.
I Pride Of Lions hanno conquistato un pubblico fedele in tutto il mondo grazie a canzoni capaci di entrare in sintonia emotiva con gli ascoltatori. C’è un incontro particolare con un fan o una storia che ti ha ricordato quanto la vostra musica sia diventata importante nella vita delle persone?
Rispondo personalmente a tutte le lettere dei miei fan e adoro ascoltare le storie di come le mie canzoni abbiano toccato le loro vite. È emozionante sapere che alcune delle mie canzoni hanno trasformato i loro cieli oscuri in cieli azzurri. Questa è la più grande ricompensa che potrei desiderare.
Dopo più di vent’anni insieme, quale pensi sia il segreto della longevità dei Pride Of Lions e cosa continua a ispirarti ogni volta che inizi a scrivere e registrare un nuovo album?
Wow, 20 anni, davvero? Ahah! Sono stato benedetto dalla possibilità di scrivere per alcuni dei cantanti più incredibili nella storia del rock, da Dave Bickler a Jimi Jamison. Da Sammy Hagar a Don Barnes e ai 38 Special. E naturalmente la mia casa base, gli incredibili Ides Of March, con cui celebriamo 62 anni di musica e fratellanza.
Con “Unbridled” ormai disponibile in tutto il mondo, quali sono le tue speranze per questa uscita e, guardando oltre l’attuale ciclo dell’album, come vorresti fosse il prossimo capitolo dei Pride Of Lions?
Il mio mantra è vivere ogni giorno al massimo: amare come se non fossi mai stato ferito, ridere quando senti di voler piangere. Questo è ciò che il mondo intero deve conoscere.

On the occasion of the release of “Unbridled”, the eighth studio album by Pride Of Lions, released through Frontiers Music Srl, the legendary songwriter and musician talks about resilience, freedom, personal experiences and the enduring spirit that keeps this band alive after more than two decades.
First of all, thank you for taking the time to speak with us and welcome to Il Raglio Del Mulo. With “Unbridled”, Pride Of Lions return with their eighth studio album, once again demonstrating why the band has remained one of melodic rock’s most respected names for over two decades. Looking back on the journey that led to this release, what makes this album stand out in your eyes?
Hi Giuseppe! Hope you are doing great. To me what stands out is how Toby and I keep pushing the boundaries of what Pride Of Lions is all about: strength and resiliency.
The title “Unbridled” immediately suggests ideas of freedom, determination and moving forward without limitations. What does that title represent for the band, and how does it reflect the themes explored throughout the album?
Unbridled represents freedom. From Mike Aquino’s amazing guitar intro to the end we are truly free and Unbridled!
The twelve songs on “Unbridled” take listeners through different emotions, from uplifting anthems to more reflective moments. As the album came together, did you already have a clear vision of its overall flow, or did the story naturally reveal itself as each song was completed?
Great question my friend. We had a blueprint of course in keeping with the POL mission to motivate people to get off their butts and move. Don’t blame others. Be the change.
You have built an extraordinary songwriting legacy, while Pride Of Lions has developed its own unmistakable identity over the years. How does the creative process work today within the band, and how have your individual strengths evolved into the chemistry that defines Pride Of Lions?
We started in 2003 with a blank sheet of paper. When Serafino and Mario of Frontiers flew to Nashville to meet and greet Toby and I, Mario looked at Toby and said “Serafino He’s a baby” and Serafino said “yeah but that baby can SING!!!” The rest is history.
“I’ll Be Your Rock” is a heartfelt tribute to loyalty and lifelong partnership, inspired by your marriage. How important is it for Pride Of Lions to balance deeply personal stories with the universal themes that have always been at the heart of melodic rock?
That is what we always try to do: weave our personal stories into our songs. Love is universal. Karen and I will have been husband and wife for 54 years on September 2. Toby and Chrystina have a very similar story though they are much younger than me. They are an amazing team.
Throughout your career you’ve consistently delivered memorable melodies without chasing musical trends. In today’s rock scene, where styles evolve rapidly, what motivates you to remain faithful to your musical vision while still keeping each new album fresh and relevant?
Thank you for those words. I never try to reinvent the wheel but I am always trying to give it a different spin: put a fresh melodic turn of a clever chord progression. Same horse, different saddle.
Pride Of Lions has earned a loyal following around the world thanks to songs that connect emotionally with listeners. Is there a particular fan encounter or story that reminded you just how meaningful your music has become in people’s lives?
I answer all my fan mail personally and I love hearing the stories of how my songs have touched their lives. It’s humbling to know that some of my songs turned their dark skies to blue. That’s the richest royalty I could ask for.
After more than twenty years together, what do you think is the secret behind the longevity of Pride Of Lions, and what continues to inspire you every time you begin writing and recording a new album?
Wow 20 years, really. lol! I have been blessed with writing for some of the most amazing singers in the history of rock from Dave Bickler to Jimi Jamison. From Sammy Hagar to Don Barnes and 38 Special. And of course my home base, the amazing Ides Of March, and to celebrate 62 years of music and brotherhood.
With “Unbridled” now available worldwide, what are your hopes for this release, and looking beyond the current album cycle, what would you like the next chapter of Pride Of Lions to look like?
My mantra is to live each day to its fullest: love like you’ve never been hurt, laugh when you feel like crying. This is what the whole world needs to know.
