ENGLISH VERSION BELOW: PLEASE, SCROLL DOWN!
All’epoca, rappresentava esattamente ciò che provavo.
Quel piacere deve restare.

With Shakra, experience has never meant standing still. On “Just Live Loud!”, the Swiss hard rock veterans turn decades of road-tested identity into a record that sounds hungry, immediate and alive, balancing the weight of the band’s trademark guitars with a more modern edge. Mark Fox takes us inside the writing, recording and emotional world of the album, from the deeply personal “High Above The Storm” to the unexpected Anastacia cover “Left Outside Alone”, while looking back at his return to the band and ahead to a new chapter with Frontiers Music.
Thank you for taking the time to speak with Il Raglio Del Mulo. With “Just Live Loud!”, Shakra return with their 14th studio album, combining the band’s established hard rock identity with a heavier and more modern approach, while the title itself seems to capture the album’s central attitude: what did you want “Just Live Loud!” to express that could not have been expressed by any of your previous albums?
I wouldn’t say we wanted to express something that had been impossible before. We still make music that excites us. “Just Live Loud!” puts into words an attitude we’ve had for a long time: listening to your own voice and not constantly putting life off until later. It doesn’t mean you always have to be the loudest person in the room. It’s about living your own life.
That attitude is closely connected to the idea of living without holding back, while you have also described fatherhood as something that changed his perspective on life and responsibility: how did these personal changes find their way into the lyrics, melodies and overall emotional character of the album?
You can hear it most clearly in “High Above The Storm”. I wrote the lyrics for my daughter. I want her to know that I’ll be there for her, no matter which path she chooses in life. At the same time, she gives me a fresh perspective on things I’d long taken for granted. She can be completely fascinated by a stone or a flower, and I get to rediscover those things with her. That really moves me, and naturally it finds its way into my lyrics. But that doesn’t make the album a diary of my life as a father. Not every song is directly about me; often the music brings an image or a feeling to mind, and the lyrics grow from there.
From the tension of “Let The Show Begin” to the more reflective side of songs such as “High Above The Storm”, “Just Live Loud!” moves between different emotional states without losing its hard rock identity: how did the band decide which songs belonged together on the same album and how did the track sequence take shape?
It’s important to us that an album has a dramatic arc. A song won’t have the same impact at every point in the running order, so we pay close attention to how the tracks follow one another. For people who listen to the whole album, we want it to be an experience in which each song gets its own special moment, the moment it deserves. For “Just Live Loud!”, Thomas had already suggested a running order, and we all agreed with it straight away.
“Let The Show Begin” also led Shakra into unusual territory through the collaboration with Seraina Telli on “Left Outside Alone”, originally recorded by Anastacia: what made that particular song interesting enough to transform it into a Shakra track, and how did Seraina’s voice influence the final arrangement?
Just a small clarification: the duet with Seraina is “Left Outside Alone”, not “Let The Show Begin”. I associate the Anastacia song with a painful breakup. At the time, it captured exactly how I felt. When I suggested it to Thomas, he turned it into a version that immediately sounded like Shakra. We knew Seraina from touring together. We’d been blown away by her voice, so we wanted to record the song with her. Her involvement didn’t change the arrangement. She brought another dimension to it through her voice and her energy.
Thomas Muster has described “Something You Don’t Understand” from “Snakes & Ladders” as the first Shakra song that gave him the feeling of having found the perfect song, while he now considers “Just Live Loud!” the album he had always wanted to write: what changed in his approach to songwriting that finally made that long-standing ambition possible?
Thomas would have to answer exactly how he feels about that himself. I can only speak from my perspective as the singer. For me, it’s important that a composition makes me feel something before there are even finished lyrics. Then images and stories start to emerge, and I find my way into the song. On “Just Live Loud!”, I feel that the music, lyrics and vocals fit together particularly well.
The vocals for “Just Live Loud!” were recorded by you alone in your basement, creating a very different working environment from a conventional studio session: how did that solitude affect the performances, and did having complete freedom to experiment change the way the final vocal tracks were shaped?
I’d really been looking forward to that challenge, but it turned out to be bigger than I’d imagined. It’s difficult to be your own critic. When there’s nobody sitting next to you giving you their opinion, you have to decide for yourself whether a take is genuinely good or whether you need to go again. There was a lot of freedom, but just as much responsibility. I did it, and I’m proud of that. In fact, I think it’s my best vocal performance so far.
Looking back at Shakra’s history, there have been several major changes in the lineup and even a period when you left the band before returning in 2015, yet the band has continued to retain a recognizable identity: what is the element that makes a song unmistakably Shakra regardless of who is standing inside the lineup at a particular moment?
The guitars, together with the vocals, are Shakra’s most important trademarks. Thomas’ approach to songwriting and Thom’s guitar playing and work on the sound are a huge part of what defines the band. Add the voice, and you have a combination people recognise. Also, Thomas, Thom and Roger have been there since the beginning, and they account for a lot of that identity. Of course, everyone brings their own personality, but that core remains.
With more than three decades of history, countless tours and appearances at major festivals, Shakra have accumulated a very different perspective on the rock’n’roll lifestyle than they had in their early years: is there a particular moment from the band’s past that has acquired a completely different meaning when viewed from where Shakra are today?
For me, it would be my return in 2015. With a bit of distance, you see many things differently, including your own role in a band. When I look back on it now, what stands out is everything that followed: more albums, lots of shows, and now another number-one album. Of course, nobody could have known at the time where it would all lead. Today, I’m simply glad we found our way back to each other.
“Just Live Loud!” arrives as the beginning of a new chapter with Frontiers Music, after such a long journey through different phases of Shakra’s career: now that this album is finally in the hands of the listeners, what would the band like the next chapter to look like, both musically and on stage?
Right now, the tour is definitely my main focus. We’re absolutely thrilled that “Just Live Loud!” reached number one in Switzerland. Now we want to take these songs on stage and have a great night with the people who come to see us. I’m curious to see how the new songs develop live — you only find that out when you play them in front of an audience. And musically, we want to keep writing songs that we’re excited about ourselves. That enjoyment has to stay.
