Nei nostri ricordi scolastici, Cipro è la terra di eroi ed epiche battaglie. La cose non sembrano cambiate molto, gli Harmonize con il loro metal epico, contenuto nell’esordio “Warrior in the Night” (Grand Sounds Promotion) ci riportano proprio a quei tempi mitologici.
Benvenuto su Il Raglio del Mulo, George (Giorgos Constantinou – chitarra). Gli Harmonize hanno iniziato suonando thrash metal, poi pian piano hanno incorporato gradualmente alcuni elementi del power metal ed di altri generi più oscuri. Come definiresti oggi il tuo sound?
Si potrebbe descrivere il nostro sound attuale come heavy e power metal con influenze dark, death e thrash.
Puoi ricapitolare i passaggi antecedenti al tuo album di debutto?
Prima di giungere al nostro debutto, abbiamo passato alcuni momenti complicati. Abbiamo dovuto fare un paio di sostituzioni di membri, ciò ha significato che il processo di registrazione si è interrotto più volte. Alcune delle tracce erano già state scritte nel 2012 quando si formarono gli Harmonize. Abbiamo pubblicato due demo e abbiamo continuato a suonare dal vivo a Cipro. Durante questo periodo non abbiamo smesso di scrivere e riscrivere tracce. Sozos è stato l’ultimo a unirsi alla band. Quando finalmente tutti erano a bordo, le registrazioni sono state completate e gli Harmonize erano finalmente pronti a rilasciare “Warrior in the Night”.
“Warrior in the Night”, il vostro primo album, è uscito ad ottobre, com’è nato?
“Warrior in the Night” è un concept, e in generale lo sono anche gli Harmonize come progetto. L’individualità di tutti all’interno della band influenza il suono nel suo insieme e rafforza gli elementi che desideriamo trasmettere attraverso il nostro lavoro. Era importante che tutti condividessero la stessa visione per l’album affinché funzionasse.
“Warrior in the Night” è un concept album. Lo storyboard è firmato da te e Nicolina Papas, ci racconti qualcosa?
Non vogliamo ancora condividere tutto sulla storia. Presto verranno rivelati altri personaggi e trame. Il guerriero sembra essere solo uno dei personaggi. Sta combattendo per vendicare il suo re e la sua regina quando riceve un ultimatum. Questo è tutto per ora. Abbiamo incluso un’outro recitata nell’album per coloro che desiderano saperne di più sul Warrior e sul suo destino.
La title track “Warrior In The Night” è stata usata come primo singolo e video dall’album, che mi dici di questa canzone?
Il Warrior in the Night personifica il potere, l’avidità e il terrore anche se alla fine è evidente che è solo un uomo, fino a quando non incontra una forza più oscura. Questa particolare canzone dovrebbe dare una prima idea di lui come di un feroce combattente sul campo di battaglia.
Negli ultimi anni hai condiviso il palco con artisti famosi come Bonfire, Wotan, Blaze Bayley (ex Iron Maiden), Picture. Cosa hai imparato da questi grandi nomi?
Questi nomi sono effettivamente significativi nel metal. Vorremmo sicuramente condividere il palco con più artisti con cui ci immedesimiamo musicalmente e che hanno influenzato il nostro suono. Suonando ai festival in generale, abbiamo imparato molto su noi stessi come band e come artisti, oltre che su tutto ciò che accade dietro le quinte.
Prima del lockdown, la scena live cipriota era attiva?
Abbastanza. Direi che probabilmente circa due anni fa la scena era molto attiva, con festival e grandi nomi che visitavano l’isola e metal bar che tenevano viva la scena. Cipro ha molto da offrire in termini di varietà di generi metal e di passione che hanno i metallari. Sfortunatamente, la pandemia ha fatto sì che molti artisti non potessero più salire su un palco, ci manca davvero suonare dal vivo. Tuttavia, durante il blocco abbiamo continuato a lavorare sul nostro album e questo ci ha reso molto produttivi.
Quanto è difficile per una band di Cipro emergere dall’underground internazionale?
Non è necessariamente una questione di difficoltà. Vogliamo credere che le band che meritano il riconoscimento alla fine lo riceveranno, ma anche il networking è importante.

Temple of Evil, black metal; Blynd, death/thrash metal; Mirror e Arrayan Path, heavy metal.
In our school memories, Cyprus is the land of heroes and epic battles. Things don’t seem to have changed much, Harmonize with their epic metal, contained in the debut “Warrior in the Night” (Grand Sound Promotion), take us back to those mythological times.
Welcome to Il Raglio del Mulo, George (Giorgos Constantinou – guitars). Harmonize began by playing thrash metal, the band gradually incorporated some power metal elements, as well as some darker ones. How do you define your current sound?
You could describe our current sound as heavy and power metal with dark influences, such as death or thrash.
Could you recap the steps before your debut album?
For this first album of ours, followed a very tricky process. We had to go through a couple of member replacements. This meant that the recording process came to a halt a few times. Some of the tracks were already written back in 2012 when Harmonize were formed. We published two demos and kept performing live in Cyprus. During this time we continued writing and rewriting some tracks. Sozos was the last to join the band. When everyone was on board recordings were done and Harmonize was ready to release Warrior in the night.
“Warrior in the Night” your first album was released in October, how is born?
Warrior in the Night is a conceptual album, and so are Harmonize as a project. Everyone’s individuality within the band influences the sound as a whole and reinforces the elements we wish to convey through our work. It was important that everyone shared the same vision for the album, in order for this to work.
“Warrior in the Night” is a concept album. The storyboard is signed by you and Nicolina Papas, could you tell something about?
We don’t wish to share everything about the story yet. Soon more characters and storylines will be revealed. The warrior happens to be just one character. He is fighting to avenge his king and queen when he is met with an ultimatum. That is all for now. We include a spoken outro in the album for those who wish to learn more about the Warrior and his fate.
The first video single from the album is the title track “Warrior In The Night”, what’s about?
Warrior in the Night personifies power, greed and terror although it is eventually apparent that he is just a man, that is until he is met with a darker force. This particular song is supposed to give a first impression of him as a vicious fighter in the battlefield.
In recent years you have shared the stage with famous artists like Bonfire, Wotan, Blaze Bayley (ex Iron Maiden), Picture. What have you learned from these big names?
These names are definitely significant in metal. We surely wish to share the stage with more artists that we relate to musically and who have influenced our sound. Playing at festivals generally, we learn a lot about ourselves as a band and as performers, as well as what goes on behind the scenes.
Before the lockdown, was the Cypriot live scene active?
Very much so. I would say that probably about two years ago the scene was significantly active, with festivals being organised, and big names visiting the island and metal bars keeping the scene alive. Cyprus has a lot to offer in terms of the different genres of metal and the passion metalheads have. Unfortunately, the pandemic meant that a lot of artists could not be on the stage any more, although we trully miss playing live. However, during the lockdown we continued working on our album and that made us very productive.
How difficult is it for a band from Cyprus to emerge from the international underground?
It is not necessarily a matter of difficulty. We wish to believe that bands deserving of the recognition will eventually receive it, however networking matters as well.
Which Cypriot bands do you recommend?
Temple of Evil, black metal; Blynd, death/thrash metal; Mirror & Arrayan path, heavy metal.
