Un saluto Giuseppe a te e ai tuoi lettori de Il Raglio del Mulo. Spero che tu e i tuoi cari stiate bene e al sicuro in questo periodo alquanto drammatico. Grazie per i complimenti, li ho apprezzati tanto. Sono estremamente felice di aver completato questo disco lungo e impegnativo. Beh, cosa dovrei dire? Ovviamente è un altro capitolo da aggiungere alle esperienze della mia vita. Si va sempre avanti, senza far caso ai segnali di stop (risate), a tutta velocità, e non si finisce mai e mai dovrebbe si dovrebbe finire!

Come è nato “Progression”? Da cosa hai tratto ispirazione?
L’ispirazione viene da qualsiasi cosa e da tutto ciò che la vita ha da offrire, specialmente da ciò che ogni artista è capace di rubare tra le pieghe dell’esistenza, sia dalle sfide che dalle cose gioiose. Per la mia carriera, ma sono sono sicuro anche per quelle di molti altri, è la formula più semplice per minimizzare al massimo tutte le turbolenze della vita e sfruttare così la saggezza acquisita a fatica nella mia “progressione”, come è avvenuto in ogni mia uscita precedente.

Quello che hai creato per questo album è più o meno quello che avresti voluto fare musicalmente quando hai iniziato la tua carriera da solista?
Penso di sì. Più invecchio, più precisa è la visione che ho nei miei momenti di creazione musicale. Tutta la mia vita è una combinazione di cose che ho accumulato attraverso le mie esercitazioni, le mie esperienze, e tutto ciò si è fuso in qualche modo ovviamente!

Potresti presentare i musicisti coinvolti in questo album?
Certo, è un vero onore per me. Prima di tutto, come tutti saprete, sono accompagnato dal mio amico molto speciale, che chiamo mio il mio fratello americano, Jon Doman. Ha alle spalle una quantità incredibile di successi raggiunti con la sua band, oltre a molti grandi lavori con lo straordinario Greg Howe che ha accompagnato con la magia della sua chitarra e che, tra le altre cose, ha anche prodotto il mio album di debutto “High Definition”. Di certo, conosci quel mago! Passiamo a un batterista che ammiro: Jon è sempre stato una persona su cui ho fatto affidamento. Ha suonato nel mio primo album strumentale “High Definition” nel 1997 , su “Extreme Measures” e “VK3”, oltre che su un progetto che abbiamo messo su con due incredibili chitarristi messicani Marco e Javier. Il progetto chiamato “Ferrigno, Leal, Kuprij” . Jon è sempre stato perfetto per la mia musica e ha lasciato il segno in tutti i miei dischi solisti. Quel ragazzo è un pazzo sia come batterista che e come persona. Jon ha anche co-prodotto questo album con me, ed è stato molto importante perché ha contribuito alla longevità di questa uscita e, si spera, al successo che intendo raggiungere. Al basso, un signore che reso una grande prestazione che sul mio album solista “VK3” e su “Progression”, con sound decisamente di buon gusto. Il suo nome è Dave Nacarelli. Ottimo amico. Quindi, direi, ho messo su un trio perfetto. Tutti questi soldati sono amici di lunga data e mi sono unito alla loro squadra quando sono arrivato negli Stati Uniti, il che ci ha aiutato molto a essere in grado di lavorare insieme in modo fraterno e con il giusto spirito e rispetto. Il Signore mi ha fornito un po’ di magia per la chitarra che stavo cercando. Non ho abbastanza tempo per esprimere tutto a parole, per dire WOW! Sono onorato per ogni chitarrista / artista che è apparso su un mio album, perché si è espresso al più alto livello possibile. Non è così facile e non è così frequente che l’alchimia perfetta si concretizzi.

Preferisci essere il solista al comando o uno dei membri di una band grande e di successo come la Trans-Siberian Orchestra?
Nell’industria musicale di oggi, per un musicista professionista è molto importante avere delle opzioni. La musica non ha limiti, né dovrebbero esserlo i riflettori che una persona desidera avere su di sé. Ho la fortuna di avere una buona gamma di opportunità e farò qualsiasi cosa musicalmente possibile, purché sia ​​adeguatamente valutata, e non mi stopperò finché il Potere Più Grande non mi fermerà.

In passato sei stato in tour durante i giorni di Natale con la TSO, cosa provi in ​​questo strano periodo natalizio senza concerti dal vivo?
La TSO è una specie di impero. Una sorta di lotteria da vincere per poterne fare parte. Sono fortunato a lavorare a un livello musicale così alto, con standard elevati in tutto, dalla produzione a tutti i responsabili dentro e fuori dal palco. È un’esperienza sbalorditiva, proprio perché, come ho detto prima, è una specie di impero. Il mondo intero è ferito, non solo la TSO, ma riusciremo a trovare un modo per superare il momento difficile. La “perfezione” è un atteggiamento, quindi dobbiamo sopportare e combattere tutto ciò che ci viene incontro sotto forma di difficoltà. Ci sono delle difficoltà, ma ho il vantaggio di aver svolto una pratica estenuante durante la mia giovinezza che mi permette di superarle. Come ho già detto, sono benedetto e spero che tutti coloro che sono stati colpiti da questo mostro, chiunque esso sia, possa vedere presto la luce: torneremo a divertirci con la musica. Se non c’è divertimento, non c’è qualità.

Hai già in programma un tour con il tuo materiale solista?
Certo, muoio dalla voglia di alzarmi e portare la mia musica a tutte le persone che mi sono fan e appassionate della mia musica. Lavorerò sodo per vedere se è possibile farlo, sicuramente mi impegnerò molto per realizzarlo. Dio volendo.

Chi ti ha fatto conoscere il pianoforte?
Il mio defunto padre. Era un musicista professionista dalle grandi qualità. Gli sono debitore.

È nato prima il tuo amore per la musica classica o per il rock? E quando hai deciso di mescolare questi due generi musicali?
Ho iniziato con la formazione classica all’età di quattro anni. Sono contento, perché è il periodo migliore per imparare ed è la formazione migliore che si possa ricevere. Per me, come pianista, è stata una lezione dura da sopportare, e ha fatto quella differenza che mi ha permesso di andare avanti nella mia carriera attraversando anche un paio di continenti. E poi ho incontrato Roger Staffelbach in Svizzera, dove sono andato a studiare all’Accademia della musica di Basilea. Abbiamo creato una band strumentale e siamo diventati fratelli. Sono successe così tante cose che potrei scrivere un libro. Ma la musica non ha limiti, ho abbastanza voglia e volontà e una mente aperta per correre dei rischi, così era allora e così è oggi. Finche avrò la forza, mescolerò qualsiasi stile di musica, lo renderò rock in ogni modo possibile. Non ci sono regole che possano limitarti musica, così come nella vita. Apri il tuo cuore e sentirai sempre la magia. Ne so no certo, perché io lo faccio.

Cosa c’è nel futuro di Vitalij Kuprij?
Rimanere in vita e continuare a fare della musica che i miei amici e fan possano apprezzare e, si spera, capire.

Vitalij Kuprij is known internationally for his outstanding piano abilities, songwriting and a his style that’s evolved through both hard work and study. Days ago we talked with Vitalij about his new solo album “Progression” (Lion Music Record).

Thank you Vitalij for taking the time to answer a few questions for the readers of Il Raglio del Mulo. Congrats on the new album, “Progression”. This is your tenth solo release, is still possible e progression after all these albums?
Greetings Giuseppe to you and to your readers of Il Raglio del Mulo. I hope you and yours are very well and safe during those strange times we are dealing with. Thanks for the congrats and I do appreciate it very much. I’m extremely happy to complete this long and demanding record. Well, what do I suppose to say? Of course, it’s another chapter of life experiences but without Stop Signs (Laughter), full speed ahead, and it never ends and it never should!

How is born “Progression”? Where did you draw your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from anything and everything out of what life has to offer, especially what each artist is trying to extract or, how much to extract of those life curves and challenges and joyous things it has to offer. In my career, as well, as I’m sure in many others, it’s a simple formula to suck up all of this life-turbulences to the maximum and to apply that hard-gained wisdom in to my “Progression” just like any other music endeavor that I had to face.

Is what you have created in this album more or less something that you wanted rather be doing musically when you began your solo career?
I think yes. The older I get the more precise of a vision I have in my music crafting moments. My whole life is a combination of things that I accumulated through my trainings, my life experiences and it all connected in some way of course!

Could you to introduce the musicians involved in this album?
Absolutely, that would be my honor. First of all as you know, I’m accompanied by my very special friend, who I call my American brother, Jon Doman. He has an incredible amount of his own achievements from his own band, to his many great works with an amazing Greg Howe who performed his guitar magic and actually produced my debut album “High Definition”. Sure, you know that wizard! So, back to a drummer who I admire. Jon was always a person to go to for me. He played on my first instrumental album “High Definition” (1997), “Extreme Measures”, “VK3” and a project we did with two incredible Mexican guitarists Marco and Javier. The project called “Ferrigno, Leal, Kuprij” etc., so, Jon was always a perfect fit for my music and always killed it on every of my solo records. That guy is insane in his own way as a drummer and as a person. Jon also co-produced this album with me which was very important what he contributed to this albums longevity and hopefully the success I’m planing to achieve. I invited after a beautiful effort that this gentleman did by recording for me on my “VK3” solo album, and he played a very tasteful bass guitar duties on “Progression”. His name is Dave Nacarelli. Great dude. So, I would say, I got a perfect trio. All of those soldiers are friends from the past and I joined their squad when I arrived in USA which, helped us a lot to be able to work brotherly together, and with proper spirits and respect. Then, the Lord provided me with some guitar magic I been seeking. I don’t have enough time, words etc., to say WOW. I’m honored for every guitarist/artist who came through for my album on the highest level possible. It’s not that easy and it’s not that frequent when magic happens for real.

Do you prefer to be the solo man on the command or a member of a big and successful band as TSO?
In the music industry as it is today as well as in general, in order to be a professional musician, its very important to have options. Music has no limits, neither should the spotlight of any artist who wants it badly enough. I’m blessed to have a variety of opportunities and I will be doing anything musically related, as long as I’m properly valued, and I won’t stop until the bigger power stops me.

In the past you touring during the Christmas days with TSO, what do you feel in this strange Christmas season without live concerts?
TSO is an empire of a sort. It’s like a lottery you win to join. I’m blessed to be working at such a high level of music and in fact high level of everything, from production, to all the people in charge on and off the stage. It’s a mind boggling experience, just like I said it above. It’s an empire of a sort.
The whole world is hurt, not just TSO and we always find a way to overcome. “Perfection” is an attitude, therefore we must endure and battle anything that comes our way in form of distraction. I always felt that, I have a bit of an upper hand by the grueling training from my younger days, like I said, I’m blessed and hopefully everyone affected by this monster whoever that is will soon see the light and we get back to the music making fun. No fun, no quality in the end.

Any touring plans for the solo material?
Of course, I’m dying to get up there and rip it up for all the people who are supportive fans and friends of my music. I will work hard to see if it’s possible and definitely, will put a lot of effort to make it happen. God bless.

Who did introduce you to piano?
My late father. He was a professional musician in so many areas of that field. I owe him.

Was born first your love for classical music or for rock? And when did you decide to mix this two musical genres?
I started classical training at four years of age. I’m glad, because it’s the best, in fact, is the ultimate training one can receive. To me, as a pianist it was important training to endure, and it did made a difference for me moving forward in my career through a couple of continents. And then, I met Roger Staffelbach in Switzerland where I came to study in the Basel Academy Of Music. We created an instrumental band and became brothers. So much happened then I can write a book. But music has no limits so if I have enough desire and will and an open mind for taking risks, which I did then, and still, do it now. I will blend any style of music, I will rock it every way one can. There are no rules for limiting yourself to anything as in music, so is in life. Open your heart and you will always feel magic. I know, I do.

What’s next for Vitalij Kuprij?
Staying alive and continue making music that my friends and fans can enjoy and hopefully understand.
