I Killing nascono nello Jutland orientale, in Danimarca, alla fine del 2013, con l’unico scopo di scrivere thrash metal senza compromessi sulla scia di band come Slayer, Exodus, Kreator e Metallica. Il loro album di debutto “Face The Madness” verrà pubblicato dalla Mighty Music il 13 agosto 2021.
Benvenuto Rasmus (Soelberg – voce, basso), dopo un Ep e due singoli, il tuo vostro debutto è finalmente fuori! Potresti presentare “Face the Madness” ai nostri lettori?
Ciao e grazie mille per averci contattato! Bene, “Face The Madness” è sicuramente il nostro lavoro più importante e curato, abbiamo innalzato l’asticella delle nostre ambizioni per mostrare al mondo cosa è in grado di creare il nostro piccolo gruppo. È senza dubbio il nostro più grande lavoro! Volevamo mostrare al mondo parte di quella follia che portiamo nei nostri spettacoli dal vivo, la follia delle nostre menti e anche la follia di tutto il mondo e trasmetterla alle nostre nove tracce.
La vostra etichetta, Mighty Music, descrive il vostro album con queste parole ‘Probabilmente il miglior disco thrash metal danese dai tempi di “Excursion Demise” degli Invocator e “By Inheritance” degli Artillery’: sei d’accordo?
Bene, prima di tutto siamo estremamente orgogliosi di essere stati accostati ai nostri eroi! E le reazioni e le recensioni che abbiamo avuto di “Face The Madness” finora, sono davvero folli (in senso buono), quindi essere messi sullo stesso livello di Invocator e Artillery è fantastico. Puntiamo sempre ad essere megliori e più energici di prima, e il poter risultare anche solo in parte bravi come Invocator e Artillery significa aver fatto qualcosa di buono.
La vostra musica è ispirata alle band thrash metal statunitensi, ma c’è un tocco di thrash tradizionale danese nelle vostre canzoni?
Ci ispiriamo principalmente alla scena americana e tedesca, ma a volte portiamo un riff in “stile thrash danese” qua e là. Anche se non siamo melodici come Lipid o Artillery, ci piace molto il suono danese e lo aggiungiamo dove si adatta e impreziosisce il nostro stile di thrash metal.
Che peso dai a ciò che i fan e i critici dicono delle vostre uscite?
Ci piace sempre ricevere feedback su ciò che facciamo! Sia positivi che negativi! Non abbiamo mai avuto dubbi sul nostro stile, suoniamo thrash metal vecchia scuola, e lo manterremo sempre così. Per noi è più importante essere orgogliosi di ciò che facciamo e sapere che risultiamo ogni volta migliorati rispetto a prima e che ci divertiamo anche mentre lo facciamo. Ma, nonostante questo, significa davvero molto per noi che ai nostri fan e ai critici piacciano le nostre cose e che si divertano mentre sono a uno spettacolo dei Killing.
L’album inizia con “Kill Everyone” e termina con “Killed in Action”. Questi due titoli, in una posizione strategica nella tracklist, sono un piccolo omaggio al vostro moniker Killing?
Ah ah! Onestamente, non ci avevo mai pensato! “Kill Everyone” è la canzone più vecchia di “Face The Madness” e ci piace usarla come apertura per i nostri spettacoli dal vivo, quindi è stato naturale usarla anche come opner per l’album. “Killed In Action” ha ottenuto la posizione finale solo a fine produzione e il titolo si adatta perfettamente al contenuto della canzone e il modo in cui il pezzo si evolve lo rende davvero un gran finale!
“Straight Out of Kattegat” è un omaggio ai vostri avi?
“Straight out of Kattegat” è sia un tributo ai nostri avi che alla nostra casa a Kattegat! Ma soprattutto è un tributo a un grande mostro marino e alla nostra leggendaria t-shirt “Straight out of Kattegat”! Conosci la sua storia? Vieni a un nostro spettacolo e ti racconteremo la leggenda.
Invece che mi dici di “1942”?
“1942” è un tributo alle armate della resistenza danese durante la seconda guerra mondiale, è anche un tributo a tutte le famiglie e agli amici caduti durante il combattimento.
Avete testato, prima del lockdown, le vostre nuove canzoni canzone sul palco?
Abbiamo suonato e testato circa la metà delle canzoni dal vivo prima di entrare nei Dead Rat Studio con Jacob Bredahl, abbiamo un paio di canzoni che non sono ancora state suonate innanzi a un pubblico dal vivo e non vediamo l’ora di riprodurre l’intero disco davanti ai nostri folli follower!
Qual è la situazione attuale per quanto riguarda i concerti in Danimarca? Ti aspetti una rapida ripresa dell’attività live?
Spettacoli dal vivo? Che cosa sono? Stavo scherzando! Di recente abbiamo suonato uno spettacolo dal vivo con una folla in piedi! Ed è stato semplicemente fantastico! Abbiamo davvero assorbito l’energia! Quindi incrociamo le dita affinché le cose continuino ad andare avanti nel modo giusto e che non ci si farmi più con gli spettacoli dal vivo!

Welcome Rasmus (Soelberg – vocals, bass), after one Ep and two singles, your debut is out! Could you introduce “Face the Madness” album to our readers?
Hi and thank you so much for having us! Well, Face The Madness is our most serious and dedicated work yet, we raised our ambitions and wanted to show the world what our little group could create. Its without doubt our greatest work (yet). We wanted to show the world some of the madness we bring to our live shows, the madness from our minds and also the madness from around the world and put it down to our nine numbers.
Your label, Mighty Music, describes your album with these words ‘Probably the best Danish thrash metal record since “Excursion Demise” by Invocator and “By Inheritance” from Artillery’: are you agree?
Well, first of all we are extremely proud to be mentioned along with our own heroes! And the reactions and reviews we had on “Face The Madness” so far, are really insane (in a good way) so being put in the same box as Invocator and Artillery is amazing. We always aim to be better and more energic than before so I hope we can be just a tiny bit as good as Invocator and Artillery, then we truly know we made something out of our selves.
Your music is inspirited by US thrash metal bands, but is there a touch of traditional Danish thrash sound in your songs?
We are mostly inspired by the US and German scene, but we sometimes bring a “Danish thrash style” riff in here and there. Even though we are not as melodic as either Lipid or Artillery, we really like the Danish sound and add it where it fits and does something good for our style of thrash metal.
How do you measure the importance of what the fans and critics say about your releases?
We always love to get feedback on what we do! Both positive and negative! We have never had any doubt about our style, we play old school thrash metal, and we will always keep it that way. It’s more important to us that we are proud of what we do and that we are better that before and also have fun while we do it. But it really means a lot for us that our fans and critics like our stuff and have fun while being at a Killing show.
The album begins with “Kill Everyone” and ends with “Killed in Action”. Are these two titles, in a strategic position into the tracklist, a little tribute to your moniker Killing?
Ha ha! Honestly, I haven’t given it so much thought! “Kill Everyone” is the oldest song on “Face The Madness” and we love to use it as an opener to our live shows, so it felt natural to use it as an opener for the album as well. “Killed In Action” got its final title very late in the process and the title just really fits the content of the song and the way the song evolves really makes a great end song on the record.
“Straight Out of Kattegat” is a tribute to your ancients?
“Straight out of Kattegat” is both a tribute to our ancients and our home in Kattegat! But most of all its a tribute to a great sea monster and our legendary ‘Straight out of Kattegat’ t-shirt! Do you know the story of that one? Come to our shows sometimes, then we will tell you the legend.
What’s about “1942”?
“1942” is a tribute to the Danish resistance crew back in WW2, it’s also a tribute to all the families and friends who fell along the fight.
Did you check, before the lockdown, your new songs on stage?
We have played and tested about half the songs live before we went into the Dead Rat Studio with Jacob Bredahl, and we still have a couple of songs that haven’t been played in front of a live audience yet and we just can’t wait to play the full record in front of our crazy followers!
What is the current situation with regard to the gigs in Denmark? Do you expect a fast resumption of live activity?
Live shows? Whats that? Just kidding! We have actually just recently played a live show with a standing crowd outside! And it was JUST AWESOME! We really missed the energy! So our fingers are crossed that we keep on going the right way with live shows and wont shut down again, we surely hope so!
