I Thyrfing sono tornati a otto anni di distanza dalla pubblicazione del loro acclamato album “De ödeslösa”. “Vanagandr” (Despotz Records) – un nome alternativo del lupo mitologico conosciuto dai più come Fenrir – è il primo album senza il membro fondatore Peter Löf, ma la qualità di la musica proposta dagli svedesi ha mantenuto i consueti livelli di eccellenza.
Benvenuto Patrik (Lindgren, chitarra) il vostro album numero otto, “Vanagandr”, uscirà alla fine di agosto. È passato molto tempo da quando hai registrato il demo “Solen Svartnar” nel 1995. Guardando indietro, come ci si sente ad aver compiuto quasi 25 anni di carriera facendo quello che si ama?
Grazie! Devo dire che in effetti è fantastico. Anche se non siamo sempre stati completamente attivi e impegnati al 100% per tutto il tempo, la band è sempre stata viva in qualche modo, e se non altro ha fatto qualche spettacolo ogni anno. Questo pur mantenendo l’idea e il concetto di base, pur perfezionandosi e progredendo sempre nel rispetto della stessa linea in tutti questi anni. Non credo che siano tante le band che riescono a farlo, quindi sì, direi che ne sono orgoglioso.
Cosa è rimasto intatto dello spirito iniziale della band nel nuovo album “Vanagandr”?
In realtà, direi quasi tutto. Ovviamente potremmo aver perso un po’ dell'”entusiasmo giovanile” e della mancanza di “barriere mentali” che accompagna la tua adolescenza… ma per le idee più basilari della musica e del concept direi che per la maggior parte è ancora tutto qui, anche se abbiamo imparato molto e affinato molte cose lungo la strada.
Questo è il vostro primo album in otto anni, la pandemia e l’assenza di spettacoli quanto hanno influenzato la vostra volontà di pubblicare un nuovo album?
Non direi che ha avuto un grande impatto ad essere onesti. Forse avremmo potuto pubblicarlo durante questa primavera se le cose fossero state “normali”, ma non ha fatto molta differenza per i tempi. Quando finalmente abbiamo messo insieme tutte le canzoni dopo molti lunghi anni era gennaio/febbraio 2020, cioè il momento in cui le cose hanno cominciato ad accadere riguardo alla pandemia… Comunque i piani che avevamo preparato per la produzione potevano procedere senza problemi, quindi sì… da quel momento le cose sono andate secondo i piani.
Quanto è importante per andare in tour per i Thyrfing? Solo pochi mesi fa gli Anathema hanno annunciato la loro fine a causa della difficile situazione economica dovuta alla pandemia di Covid 19.
Non è così importante, e in realtà non stiamo facendo molti tour, principalmente ci dedichiamo a festival e spettacoli selezionati. Fortunatamente, per i Thyrfing non è qualcosa su cui facciamo affidamento da un punto di vista finanziario, quindi possiamo praticamente andare avanti e fare quello che vogliamo, ogni volta che vogliamo… Ovviamente è triste sentire che ci siano band che si sciolgono solo per questo motivo.
Dai tempi dell’album “De ödeslösa” la formazione non è stata mai cambiata, se si esclude l’uscita del membro fondatore Peter Löf. Quanto è stato importante per te lavorare con lo stesso team del precedente full lenght?
Penso che sia una buona cosa finché c’è una buona atmosfera e cooperazione tra tutti. Oltre a fare l’album “De ödeslösa”, abbiamo anche fatto alcuni show in questi anni, quindi direi che ora ci sentiamo una realtà molto solida. E probabilmente, lavorare con gente che ha già prodotto con me un album, ha aiutato a far andare le cose.
Come ti sei sentito a lavorare senza Peter per la prima volta nella storia della band?
Una cosa nuova, sì, e un po’ una sfida su come gestire le tastiere e l’orchestrazione. Peter era (è) un musicista e songwriter di grande talento e secondo me ha apportato alcune cose uniche, non solo ai Thyrfing, ma forse all’intero genere… Abbiamo provato a lavorare con alcune persone, ma non c’è mai stato veramente feeling al 100%. Alla fine la soluzione era proprio davanti a noi, quando Joakim ci ha proposto di farlo lui, abbiamo subito sentito che aveva colto nel segno.
La vostra nuova etichetta, Despotz Records, ha annunciato una nuova edizione dei vostri album classici “Thyrfing” (1998), “Valdr Galga” (1999), “Urkraft” (2000), “Vansinnesvisor” (2002) entro la fine del 2020. Ascolti spesso le tue vecchie uscite?
Oh, non spesso, almeno non così spesso, ad essere onesti. Ogni tanto riesco a godermi un singolo brano dei primi album, e alcuni di essi li suoniamo ancora dal vivo come “Storms of Asgard”, “Mjölner” e “Sweoland Conqueror”. Dei primi quattro, sicuramente mi piace di più “Vansinnesvisor”… Penso che sia lì che abbiamo trovato lo stile attuale sul quale costruiamo ancora oggi le nostre cose, e per molti aspetti penso che suoni ancora alla grande.
Queste nuove edizioni conterranno delle bonus track?
Vedremo come studieremo e rilasceremo le versioni fisiche… speriamo che ci siano degli extra, che siano audio, video o immagini… ma non affretteremo le cose per quelle riedizioni. Penso che sia meglio che attendere il tempo giusto prima che escano di nuovo. Direi che probabilmente non accadrà fino all’inizio del 2022.
Quali brani del nuovo album eseguirte sul palco durante il prossimo tour?
Questa è una buona domanda… ad essere onesti non abbiamo ancora deciso e non ci abbiamo pensato su molto. Naturalmente i singoli brani (“Döp dem i eld”, “Jordafärd”, “Järnhand”) sarebbero scelte ovvie per i primi spettacoli, ma non lo so… dobbiamo vedere cosa rende al meglio e cosa scegliere di provare dal vivo quando inizieremo a testare le canzoni per preparare le scalette.
Thyrfing are back eight years after their acclaimed album “De ödeslösa” .”Vanagandr” (Despotz Records) – an alternative name for the wolf creature known as the more familiar Fenrir – is the first album without founding member Peter Löf, but the quality of the music proposed by the Swedes has kept the usual levels of excellence.
Welcome Patrik (Lindgren, guitars), your album number eight, “Vanagandr”, will be released at the end of August. A lot of time has passed since you recorded the “Solen Svartnar” demo in 1995. Looking back, how does it feel to have accomplished almost 25 years of doing what you love?
Thank you! I must say it feels great actually. Even though we have not always been fully active and 100% busy all the time, the band has always been alive in some way, and if nothing else doing some shows each year. This while still maintaining the basic idea and concept of the band, while always refining and progressing within the same framework throughout all these years. I don’t think it’s every band who manages to do that, so yeah, would say I feel proud about it.
What has remained intact of the initial spirit of the band on the new album “Vanagandr”?
Actually, I would say most of it. Of course we might miss some of the “youthful enthusiasm” and lack of “mental barriers” that comes with your teenage years… but for the most basic ideas of the music and concept I would say most if is still here, even though we have of course learned a lot and refined many things along the road.
This your first album in eight years, how much have the pandemic and the absence of shows influenced your will to release a new album?
I wouldn’t say it had much impact to be honest. Maybe we could have released it during this spring if things were as of “normal”, but it didn’t make that much difference for the timing. When we finally got all the songs together after many long years it was January/February 2020, i.e.. the time when things started to happen regarding the pandemic … However the plans we laid out for the production could proceed without any problems really, so yeah … from that point, things just went on according to plan.
How is important for Thyrfing touring? Just few months ago Anathema announced their hiatus due the difficult economic situation due the Covid 19 pandemic.
Not that important, and we are actually not making much touring at all, mainly festivals and selected shows. Luckily in this regard, Thyrfing is not something that we are dependable on from a financial point of view, so we can pretty much keep on going and do whatever we want, whenever we want … It is of course sad to hear old and long-running bands breaking up if it’s only for this reason.
From “De ödeslösa” album the line-up was not changed, just the founder member Peter Löf is out. How important was for you to work with the same team of the previous full length?
I think it’s a good thing as long as there is good atmosphere and co-operation between everybody. Apart from doing “De ödeslösa” album, we also did quite some shows in all the years between the albums, so I would say we feel like a very solid unit now. And probably it also helps keeping things smooth if everybody has been onboard before and have some experience in producing a Thyrfing album from before.
How did you feel to work without Peter for the first time in the history of the band?
It was a new thing, yeah, and a bit of a challenge on how we were going to handle the keyboards and orchestration. Peter was (is) a very talented musician and song-writer and in my opinion he brought in some unique things to this, not only for Thyrfing but maybe for the genre as a whole … We tried out working with a few people, but it never really felt 100%. In the end the solution was right in front of us, when Joakim decided to do it and we immediately felt that he hit the spot.
Your new label Despotz Records announced a new edition of your classic albums “Thyrfing” (1998), “Valdr Galga” (1999), “Urkraft” (2000), “Vansinnesvisor” (2002) by the end of the 2020. How often do you listen your old releases?
Oh, not that often to be honest. I can enjoy a single track from the earliest albums now and then, and some of them we still play live such as “Storms of Asgard”, “Mjölner” and “Sweoland Conqueror”. Out of the first four, I surely enjoy “Vansinnesvisor” the most … I think that’s where we found the current style that we still build things on today, and in many regards I think it still sounds great.
These new editions will contain bonus tracks?
We will see how we will package and release the physical releases … hopefully there will be some extras, may it be audio, video or visuals … but we will not rush things with those re-releases. I think it’s better we do something worthwhile once they get out again. I would say it probably won’t happen until early 2022.
Which songs from the new album will you perform on stage during the next tour?
That’s a good question … to be honest we haven’t decided or really thought about it that much yet. Naturally the single tracks (“Döp dem i eld”, “Jordafärd”, “Järnhand”) would be obvious choices for the first shows, but I don’t know … we need to see what feels best and what we think are going to work out live when we start to rehearse the songs and prepare the setlists.
