Dalla Polonia arriva un’altra band interessante, i Sarmat hanno recentemente pubblicato l’album di debutto, “RS-28”, contenente otto brani esplosivi di black/death metal.
Benvenuto, Łukasz! Potresti presentare la tua band ai nostri lettori?
Ciao a te e ai lettori! I Sarmat vengono dalla Polonia, sono stati fondati nel 2018 da due chitarristi (Daniel “Hacel” Szymanowicz e Krzysztof “Kopyś” Kopczeński). La formazione completa si è stabilizzata nel 2021 (siamo cinque ragazzi che vivono in quattro diverse località nelle zone settentrionale e centrale della Polonia). Abbiamo da poco un disco all’attivo, l’album di debutto intitolato “RS-28” uscito nel 2021 in formato digitale e su CD (un’edizione standard con custodia limitata a 500 copie e un’edizione digipack limitata a 500 copie).
La Polonia è rinomata per la sua scena estrema, vi ha influenzato in qualche modo nella scelta di proporre blackned death metal?
Sì, è vero, abbiamo molte band che suonano musica metal estrema qui in Polonia. Ma i co-fondatori della band non sono stati influenzati dalla scena musicale metal polacca, suppongo. Non di più rispetto ad altre scene di altri paesi.
Qual è lo stato di salute della scena metal polacca oggi, soprattutto dopo la pandemia?
Ebbene, non mi spingerei così tanto a da poter parlare di una situazione “dopo la pandemia”. Siamo nel mezzo della quarta ondata. Mentre rispondo alle tue domande sono infetto: l’infezione da SARS Cov-2 è stata confermata questa settimana (l’ho presa nonostante fossi vaccinato, la mia situazione non è grave). Ma le persone si muovono come se avessimo già superato questa preoccupante pandemia. Al giorno d’oggi vengono suonati molti live, anche se alcune band stanno cancellando gli show a causa della positività dei musicisti. Penso che durerà ancora molto tempo prima di poter tornare una situazione normale o, quantomeno, regolare.
Il nome della band è stato ispirato da “The Weapon of Ultimate Destruction”, il missile balistico intercontinentale super pesante russo (ICBM) RS-28 Sarmat (noto anche come Satan 2): potremmo considerare i Sarmat una concept band sulla guerra?
È corretto quello che dici sulla fonte del nome della band, ma non siamo una concept band. La guerra è solo uno degli argomenti dei testi. Non mi sentirei a mio agio con un solo concept per la band.
Potresti presentare il vostro album di debutto, “RS-28”?
Sì, con piacere. L’album di debutto dei Sarmat, intitolato “RS-28”, dura quasi 34 minuti e si compone di 8 canzoni. Per me è un misto di death metal e black metal, ma il death metal è il nocciolo della nostra musica. Alcune melodie di chitarra potrebbero essere descritte come blackned, ma lo stile vocale è piuttosto death metal. Lavoriamo anche sul nostro suono affinché sia chiaro e forte, cosa non molto comune nel black metal. Per quanto riguarda l’uscita, l’album è stato rilasciato digitalmente tramite Bandcamp il 19 marzo 2021. L’uscita fisica (CD, edizione standard jewel case limitata a 500 copie) è arrivata il 31 maggio 2021. Poi la seconda uscita in CD (questa volta si tratta di un digipack, anch’esso limitato a 500 copie) il 30 novembre dello stesso anno. Stiamo ancora aspettando l’edizione in vinile (vinile nero 180 gr, limitato a 300 copie – ordinato mesi fa e ancora non prodotto). Stiamo cercando di semplificare la vita ai fan offrendo la versione fisica in tutti i paesi possibili. Ci sto lavorando da solo, entrando in contatto con etichette, distributori di tutto il mondo per fare scambi o vendere CD all’ingrosso. Siamo presenti con i nostri CD in Russia, USA, Messico, Malesia, Brasile, Turchia e altri ancora. Presto i CD saranno disponibili in Giappone, Indonesia e Perù. Penso sia una buona idea. Il nostro album “RS-28” su CD (edizione standard jewel case) è disponibile in Italia tramite la End Of Silence Records. Le persone del tuo paese che desiderano acquistarlo possono farlo a un prezzo conveniente: non devono pagare costi di spedizione aggiuntivi.
In cosa consiste il vostro processo di scrittura delle canzoni?
Daniel Szymanowicz ha composto l’intera musica per l’album di debutto. Ha creato anche la maggior parte degli arrangiamenti, anche le parti di batteria (solo gli arrangiamenti vocali sono stati fatti da me). I chitarristi hanno tentato di dividersi il lavoro per il nuovo album, ma le cose sono rimaste le stesse di prima. Daniel è anche l’autore delle nuove composizioni. È un ragazzo molto creativo e passa un sacco di ore al giorno a comporre, arrangiare e scrivere musica. Il processo è sempre abbastanza simile. Noi (membri della band) riceviamo le nuove canzoni e prima ancora di controllarle, c’è già una nuova versione riveduta nelle nostre caselle di posta elettronica. Personalmente inizio ogni volta il mio ascolto dalla terza versione, non prima, ah, ah!
Dove e in quali condizioni è stato registrato il nuovo album? Chi si è occupato del suono, della produzione e del mastering?
È una lunga storia. L’album è stato registrato parzialmente in casa. Le parti di chitarra e di basso, e le stesse VST, sono state registrate da Daniel a casa sua. La cosa interessante è che dopo aver registrato tutte le parti di chitarra per la prima volta non era contento. Ha deciso di gettare le registrazioni nel cestino e di rifarle. Così ha sprecato la maggior parte del suo congedo dal lavoro per la prima sessione di registrazione domestica. Quindi è stato necessario un finto periodo di assenza per malattia per fare la seconda sessione, ah, ah! Le parti di batteria sono state fatte da Krzysztof Klingbein (noto per le sue esibizioni dal vivo con i Vader e il suo lavoro con i Batushka, e anche per molti lavori come session per molte band di tutto il mondo). Ha fatto le registrazioni nella sua sala prove a Słupsk, in Polonia (anche il chitarrista Daniel Szymanowicz vive in quella città). Poi le parti vocali. Sono stati registrati da me all’Invent Sound Studio di Bydgoszcz, in Polonia. L’ingegnere del suono è stato Szymon Grodzki (conosciuto per GNIDA, Sammath Naur). Ho cantato i testi scritti da un amico della nostra band. Il missaggio e il mastering dell’album sono stati eseguiti dal mago, Arkadiusz “Malta” Malczewski (noto per il suo lavoro come ingegnere in studio e fonico dal vivo per i Behemoth e altre tante band) nel suo Santa Studio a Varsavia, in Polonia. Non ricordo il numero esatto delle versioni “the final mixing”… Quante ne sono state fatte? Sette, otto forse, suppongo. Il punto è che Malta è celebre per il suo suono black metal e le sue precedenti versioni di mixaggio erano lunatiche, ma non avevano abbastanza forza per noi. Quindi stavamo cercando di raggiungere il giusto livello di aggressività correggendo il suo mixaggio. La versione finale è molto buona secondo noi.
Quali obiettivi vorresti raggiungere con questo album?
Beh, io sono realista. Non saremo mai una band che lavora professionalmente e che guadagna soldi con la propria musica, è ovvio. Ma vorrei che il nome e il marchio Sarmat fossero conosciuti nel mondo. Non credo che tutti i metallari del pianeta terra ascolteranno e apprezzeranno la nostra musica, ma se molti venissero a sapere della banda Sarmat e scoprissero il collegamento tra essa e un’arma di distruzione di massa, sarebbe bello. Se la risposta alla domanda “Conosci i Sarmat dalla Polonia?” fosse “Sono forse quei ragazzi che suonano death/black metal e parlano di missili balistici?”, sarebbe fantastico! E vorrei che Sarmat fosse un marchio di qualità in ogni aspetto della propria attività. A partire dalla musica, il suono, passando per l’intensità dal vivo e per la qualità delle nostre uscite, non importa se saranno rilasciate da noi stessi o da una qualsiasi casa discografica.
E i vostri progetti per il futuro?
Abbiamo la maggior parte del materiale per il nuovo album composto. Entro la fine di questo mese sarò in uno studio di registrazione (di nuovo l’Invent Sound Studio di Bydgoszcz, in Polonia) per registrare una parte delle parti vocali come pre-produzione per il nuovo album. Questo ci aiuterà a controllare le disposizioni e modificarle se sarà necessario farlo. Intendo le parti vocali e le parti di batteria (inizialmente programmate), perché le composizioni non sono finite e “chiuse” se così posso descriverle. Dopodiché inizieremo a lavorare con il batterista per impostare le parti di batteria corrette per le tracce. E stiamo ancora aspettando che venga prodotta l’edizione in vinile del nostro album di debutto. Questo è un grosso problema, perché non conosco molte band che hanno pubblicato la loro musica in questo formato fisico da sole. Autoprodotto in due edizioni in CD e uno in vinile – penso che valga la pena dirlo. Ci sono alcune discorsi in ballo con i distributori (l’elenco sta crescendo). E suonare dal vivo è una cosa importante per noi. Non abbiamo avuto molte occasioni di suonare dal vivo, quindi ci lavoreremo. Grazie mille per questa intervista! From Poland comes yet another interesting band, Sarmat recently released the debut album, “RS-28”, containing eight blasting tracks of black / death metal.
Welcome, Łukasz! Could you introduce your band to our readers?
Hello to You and The Reader! The Sarmat band comes from Poland, it was founded in 2018 by two guitarists (Daniel “Hacel” Szymanowicz and Krzysztof “Kopyś” Kopczeński). The full line-up was established in 2021 (we are five guys living in four different locations in the northern and the middle area of Poland). We have one record already, which is the debut full-length album entitled “RS-28” released in 2021 in digital format and on CD (a standard jewel case edition limited to 500 copies and a digipack edition limited to 500 copies as well).
Poland is renowned for its extreme scene globally, has there been any influence on you in starting a blackened death metal band?
Yes, it’s true – we have a lot of bands playing extreme styles of metal music here in Poland. But the band’s co-founders weren’t influenced by the Polish metal music scene I suppose. Not more than under the influence of the other countries’ scenes.
What is the state of health of the Polish metal scene today, especially after the pandemic?
Well, I wouldn’t go so far to describe the situation as “after the pandemic”. We are in the middle of the fourth wave. Responding to Your questions I am infected – the SARS Cov-2 infection was confirmed this week (I got it despite the fact that I was vaccinated; but my illness isn’t serious). But people are trying to act as if it was after this disturbing pandemic. Many live shows are being played nowadays, even if some of the bands are vanishing from the announcements due to infections of the musicians just days before the shows. But I think that a lot of time will have to last before we can function in a normal, common and regular way.
The band name is taken from “The Weapon of Ultimate Destruction”, the Russian super-heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) RS-28 Sarmat (also known as Satan 2): could we consider Sarmat a concept band about war?
It’s correct when we are speaking about the band’s name idea, but we are not a concept band. War is only one of the topics of the lyrics. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with only one concept idea for a band.
Could you to introduce your debut album, “RS-28”?
Yes, with pleasure. The debut album of the Sarmat band entitled “RS-28” lasts for nearly 34 minutes and consists of 8 compositions. For me personally it is a mixture of death metal and black metal, but death metal is the core of the music. Some guitar melodies could be described as blackish, but the vocal style is rather death metal one. We also work on our sound to be clear and strong, which is not very common in black metal. As for releases, the album was released digitally via Bandcamp platform service on 19th March 2021. The physical release (CD, standard jewel case edition limited to 500 copies) came on 31th May 2021. Then the second CD issue (this time it was a digipack, limited to 500 copies as well) was on 30th November the same year. We are still waiting for the vinyl edition (180 gr black vinyl, limited to 300 copies – purchased months ago and still not manufactured). We are trying to make life easier for customers and offer the physical release in as many countries as we are able to. I am working on it by myself to get in touch with labels, distributors from around the world and do trades or sell CDs for wholesale. We are present with our CDs in Russia, USA, Mexico, Malaysia, Brazil, Turkey and more. Soon CDs will be available in Japan, Indonesia and Peru. I think it’s a good idea. Our “RS-28” album on CD (standard jewel case edition) is available in Italy through the End Of Silence Records. People from Your country who want to buy it may do it for a better price – they don’t have to pay extra shipping costs.
What is your process for songwriting?
Daniel Szymanowicz composed the whole music for the debut Sarmat band’s album. He created most of the arrangements as well, even drum parts (only vocal arrangements were done by me). The guitarists were trying to split the work for the new album between each other, but things stayed the same as earlier. Daniel is the creator of new compositions too.
He is a very creative guy and spends hours day by day on composing, arranging and changing music all the time. The process always looks similar. We (band members) get the new song and before we even check it the new, corrected version is on our email boxes. I personally begin my listening from the third version each time, not earlier, ha, ha!
Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?
It’s a long story. The album was home recorded partially. The guitar parts and the bass guitar parts, the same as the VST instruments’ parts, were recorded by Daniel at his home. What’s interesting, after recording all the guitar parts for the first time he wasn’t content. He decided to throw the recordings to the trash bin and do them again. But… he wasted most of his leave from work for the first home recording session. So the fake sick leave was necessary for doing the second session, ha, ha! The drum recordings were a session job done by Krzysztof Klingbein (known for his live playing for Vader and previous work for Batushka, and plenty of session jobs for many bands from around the globe as well). He did the recordings in his rehearsal room in Słupsk, Poland (the guitarist, Daniel Szymanowicz also lives in that town). Then the vocal parts. They were recorded by me, Łukasz Kobusiński, at Invent Sound Studio in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The sound engineer for that recording was Szymon Grodzki (known from Gnida, Sammath Naur). I did the vocals for the lyrics written by a friend of our band. And the final engineering, mixing and mastering of the album. Done by the magician, Arkadiusz “Malta” Malczewski (known for his work as previous studio recording engineer and still live sound engineer for Behemoth and recordings for many bands) at his Santa Studio in Warszawa, Poland. I can’t remember the exact number of “the final mixing” versions… How many of them were made? Seven, eight maybe, I suppose. The point is that Malta is filled up with the black metal sound and his previous versions of mixing were moody, but had not enough power for us. So we were trying to achieve the proper level of aggression by correcting his mixing. The final version is very good in our opinion.
What goals would you like to achieve with this album?
Well, I am a realist. We won’t ever be a professionally working band earning money on our music, it’s obvious. But I would like the Sarmat band name and brand to be known in some places in the world. I am not wishing every metalhead on the planet earth to listen and like our music. But if some people knew about the Sarmat band and got the connection between it and a weapon of mass destruction it would be nice. If the answer to an asked question “Do You know the Sarmat band from Poland?” would be “Are they these guys playing death/black metal and spreading the information of ballistic missiles?”, it would be awesome! And I wish the Sarmat band to be a quality mark in every aspect of it’s activity. Beginning from the music, it’s sound, through the level of playing live and to the quality of our releases no matter if they will be released by ourselves or any record company.
What about your plans for the future?
We have most of the stuff for the new album composed. By the end of this month I will be in a recording studio (the Invent Sound Studio in Bydgoszcz, Poland again) to record a part of the vocal parts as a pre-production for the new album. That will help us to check the arrangements and modify them if there will be a need for doing that. I mean the vocal parts and the drum parts (initially programmed), because compositions are not finished and “closed” if I may to describe it that way. After that we will start to work with the drummer to set the proper drum parts for the tracks. And we are still waiting for the vinyl edition of our debut album to be manufactured. That’s a big deal, because I don’t know too many bands that have released their music in this physical format on their own. Self-released two CD editions and a vinyl one – I think it’s worth mentioning. There are some matters with distributors going on all the time (the list is growing). And playing live shows is an important thing for us. We haven’t had too many occasions to play live, so we are going to work on it. Thank You very much for this interview!
