“Abyss Rising” dei Nightrage (Despotz Records \ NeeCee Agency) è il terzo – dopo “Venomous” (2017) e “Wolf To Man (2019) – di una trilogia di album sull’Inferno di Dante. Scritto e registrato dalla stessa formazione del precedente disco, “Abyss Rising” è un’ulteriore prova di talento e classe.

Benvenuto Marios (Iliopulous), “Abyss Rising” è il capitolo finale della vostra trilogia che include anche i vostri due album precedenti. Questa nuova uscita è musicalmente diversa da “The Venomous” e “Wolf to Man”?
Penso che in questo nuovo album il nostro modo di scrivere le canzoni sia migliorato ancora di più, e abbiamo provato alcune cose nuove: specialmente su alcune voci in diverse canzoni, Ronnie ha aggiunto alcune voci pulite di sottofondo e questo ha reso le canzoni ancora più potenti. Ovviamente il nostro stile musicale caratteristico è presente in tutto l’album, con riff pesanti e melodie eteree, qualcosa che ci definisce come band, e cerchiamo sempre di trovare modi per migliorare il nostro modo di scrivere le canzoni esplorando ancora più a fondo. La mia chimica e quella di Magnus nella scrittura delle canzoni questa volta è ancora più affinata e siamo maturati molto come coppia di chitarre.

Quanto è difficile progettare un’opera in tre dischi? Quando hai iniziato, sapevi già come sarebbe suonato l’ultimo album?
Ebbene, quando Ronnie il nostro cantante ha iniziato a scrivere questo tema oscuro con “The Venomous”, non credo che pensasse che ci sarebbero voluti tre album per completare questa storia oscura, che è iniziata con noi umani che andiamo verso la nostra estinzione e che nell’ultimo album, “Abyss Rising”, ci ritroviamo nell’inferno che ci siamo creati. Per noi scrivere questi album è stata una cosa molto naturale, non sapevamo che questi ultimi tre dischi sarebbero stati una trilogia, è capitato e ne abbiamo seguito il flusso. Facciamo sempre demo complete prima delle registrazioni effettive dell’album, quindi abbiamo sempre in anticipo un’idea molto dettagliata di come suonerà il risultato finale.

La trilogia è uscita come volevi o ci sono cose per le quali vorresti poter tornare indietro per modificarle?
Siamo molto felici di come questi tre ultimi album si siano connessi tra loro, ovviamente quando hai finito con un disco, ci sono sempre un miliardo di cose che avresti voluto fare diversamente, ma mi piace lasciare le cose come stanno quando sono ormai state fatte e non pensarci troppo.

Pubblicherete un cofanetto che include tutti e tre gli album?
Questa è una grande idea ed è un qualcosa su cui la nostra etichetta dovrebbe riflettere, perché per chi volesse esplorare l’intero concept della storia, potrebbe essere fantastico ascoltare questi tre dischi da un bel cofanetto.

Come sono nati i vostri nuovi brani? Avete cambiato il processo di scrittura durante la pandemia?
È sempre la stessa procedura, io e Magnus che mettiamo insieme le nostre idee per i riff e facciamo demo complete con le nostre canzoni, quindi la pandemia non è stata un vero problema per noi, ho dovuto viaggiare diverse volte in Svezia per comporre e registrare l’album e a volte era molto rischioso perché non sapevo se avrei avuto un volo di ritorno. Grazie a Internet ci inviamo di continuo file avanti e indietro ed è così che abbiamo composto tutte le canzoni. È un lavoro di squadra a cui tutti contribuiscono e Ronnie in seguito scrive i propri testi e melodie vocali e Franco e Dino aggiungono le proprie idee, quindi tutti danno il proprio meglio per affinare il materiale.

Questo è il secondo album con la stessa formazione, pensi che ci sia stata una maggiore coesione tra di voi rispetto all’epoca di “Wolf to Man”?
Sì, le cose stanno andando sicuramente nella giusta direzione e l’atmosfera nella band è davvero fantastica, e puoi sentirlo nelle canzoni del nuovo album. Sono felice di aver trovato questi ragazzi fantastici perché stiamo formando una grande squadra e penso che nelle nuove canzoni abbiamo un’intesa ancora migliore e abbiamo fatto un album molto più maturo, perché ora ci conosciamo molto meglio e stiamo lavorando con una mentalità migliore e positiva.

Ispirato in parte dall'”inferno” di Dante, “Abyss Rising” esplora la continua distruzione da parte dell’uomo del mondo in cui viviamo fino a quando l’abisso si apre per ingioiare tutto. Secondo te, i tuoi fan prestano abbastanza attenzione al lato lirico dei Nightrage?
Sì, penso che questo tipo di testi sia molto interessante e spinga le persone a sedersi e leggerli, non siamo predicatori questo è certo, vogliamo solo far riflettere le persone un po’ di più su cosa sta succedendo ed essere più consapevoli. Penso anche che i nostri testi si adattino molto alla musica che stiamo suonando e questo è un altro fattore interessante per fare in modo che chiunque presti un po’ più di attenzione, perché almeno per noi anche i testi sono importanti come lo è la musica. E ci fa piacere quando i fan si interessano a musica e i testi.

Ci sono piani per eventuali tour nel prossimo futuro?
Sì, molto presto annunceremo alcuni spettacoli in Finlandia e Spagna e anche in Grecia e stiamo cercando dappertutto, dal momento che la merda covid sembra stia andando via dalle nostre vite. Abbiamo in programma di suonare in Giappone e Australia più le Americhe. Inoltre stiamo cercando un tour europeo completo e vogliamo visitare il maggior numero possibile di paesi e condividere le nuove canzoni con tutti i nostri fan.

Hai paura di andare in tournée durante l’emergenza pandemica?
È sicuramente un rischio, ma a volte è necessario correre il rischio e vedere cosa succede, penso che il covid sarà presto svanito dalle nostre vite e dobbiamo anche imparare a conviverci. Altrimenti, se vivi sempre in uno stato di paura, stai perdendo te stesso e la tua vita.

Nightrage’s “Abyss Rising” (Despotz Records) is the third – after “Venomous” (2017) and “Wolf To Man (2019) – in a trilogy of albums about Dante’s Inferno. Written and record by the same line-up of the previous album, “Abyss Rising” is a further proof of talent and class.

Welcome Marios (Iliopulous), “Abyss Rising” is the final chapter of your trilogy including your previous two albums. Is this new release musically different from “The Venomous” and “Wolf to Man”?
I think on this new album our songwriting improved even more, and we tried some new things especially on some vocals on different songs, Ronnie has added some background clean vocals underneath and that made the songs even more powerful. Of course our signature musical style its all over the album, with heavy riffing and ethereal melodies, somethings that is defining us as a band, and we always trying to find ways to improve our songwriting with exploring even more deeper. Mine and Magnus songwriting chemistry is even more detailed this time and we have mature a lot as a great guitar team.

How difficult is it to plan a three-disc opera? When you started, did you already know how the last album was going to sound?
Well when Ronnie our singer have started writing this dark theme back on The Venomous, I don’t think he would ever realized that it will took us 3 albums to complete this dark story, that is started with us humans going towards our own extinction and finally on the last album Abyss Rising, we are already in the hell that we have created for ourselves and we are done. For us writing these albums its something that comes very naturally, we didn’t know that these last 3 albums will be a trilogy, it happened that way and we just go with the flow. We always doing full demos before the actual recordings of the album so we always have a very good idea of how the album should sound beforehand.

Did the trilogy turn out the way you wanted it to, or are there things you wish you could go back and alter?
I think we are very happy of how these 3 last albums came together, of course when u are done with an album, there is always a billion things that u could do differently, but I like to let it be and when something its done, you should leave it and don’t over thinking it about it.

Will you release a box-set including all the three albums?
That’s a killer idea and its something for our label to think about, because definitely when u want to explore the whole concept of the story, is great to listen back to back these 3 last albums and why not in a cool boxset.

How are born your new tracks? Did you change your writing process during the pandemic?
Its always the same procedure me and Magnus jamming along with our riff ideas and making full demo songs, so the pandemic it was not a real problem for us, I had to travel several times in Sweden for the composing, and recording of the album and sometimes that was very risky because I didn’t know if I would have a return flight back. Thanks to the internet we always sending files to each other back and forth and that’s how we have composed all the songs. Its a team work that everybody is contributing and Ronnie later writing his own lyrics and vocal melodies and Franco and Dino adding their own ideas, so everybody is giving the best they can to be able to come up with the finished material.

This is the second album with the same line-up, do you think there has been a greater cohesion between you than at the time of “Wolf to Man”?
Yeah things are getting at the right direction for sure and the atmosphere in the band is really great, and you can hear that on the songs on the new album. I’m happy to have found these great guys that we are making a great team and I think on the new songs we have even more better chemistry and we did a much more mature album, because now we know each other so much better and we are working with a better and positive mentality.

Inspired in part by Dante’s ‘inferno’, “Abyss Rising” explores man’s continual destruction of the world we live in until the abyss opens up to consume all before it. In your opinion, do you think your fans pay enough attention to the lyrical side of Nightrage?
Yeah I think these kind of lyrics are very interesting and make people to sit down and read them, we are not preachers that’s for sure, we just want to make people think a bit more, of whats going on and be more aware. I think also that our lyrics fits a lot with the music we are playing and that’s another interesting factor to make anyone to pay a bit more attention, because at least for us lyrics are also important as the music is. And we love it when fans also embracing the whole thing music and lyrics.

Are there any plans to tour extensively in the near future?
Yeah we will going pretty soon to announce some shows in Finland and Spain and also Greece and we are looking all over the place, since covid shit seems to go away from our lives. We have plans to play in Japan and Australia plus the Americas. Also we are looking for a full European tour and we want to visit as many countries as possible and share the new songs with all our fans.

Are you afraid to tour during the pandemic emergency?
Its definitely a risk, but sometimes you need to take the risk and see what happens, I think covid will be soon vanished from our lives and we also need to learn to live with it. Otherwise if you live in a state of fear all the time, you are loosing yourself and your life.
