Sven Böge, Thorsten Thrunke e il nuovo cantante Francis Soto ci hanno presentato il nuovo album, “Heavy Rain” (Massacre Records / All Noir) degli heavy progster tedeschi Ivory Tower.
Benvenuti su Il Raglio del Mulo, molti fan non ci speravano più, eppure è arrivato il nuovo album degli Ivory Tower. Perché ci fate sempre aspettare così a lungo per un nuovo full length?
Sven: Ehi, è bello essere qui! Sì, in realtà avremmo preferito pubblicare l’album prima! Ma c’è stata la pandemia di coronavirus e quindi tutto è stato bloccato, poi ci siamo separati dal nostro vecchio cantante e abbiamo dovuto trovarne uno nuovo – cosa che siamo riusciti a fare molto bene – e poi abbiamo avuto ritardi in studio e problemi finanziari, quindi prima dovevamo avviare il crowdfunding! Ma alla fine tutto ha funzionato!
I vostri primi due full length sono unanimemente considerati tra i capolavori del power/progressive metal, eppure in quasi 30 anni di carriera avete pubblicato solo sei album? hai qualche rimpianto?
Sven: Intendi artisticamente? No! C’è stato uno sviluppo costante della nostra musica, le competenze si sono ampliate, l’esperienza è cresciuta, tutti questi sono aspetti che confluiscono nel songwriting! Naturalmente ci sarebbe piaciuto poter produrre in studi più grandi con un budget maggiore, ma bisogna considerare tutto in modo realistico e venire a patti con le circostanze!
In questo nuovo album avete un nuovo cantante, Lord Francis Soto: come siete entrati in contatto con lui?
Sven: E dove incontri qualcuno oggi? Nel web! Quindi siamo andati in mare su una barca da pesca e abbiamo tirato fuori la nostra rete da strascichio. Ciò significa che abbiamo pubblicizzato in incognito sui social media, scritto direttamente ai cantanti nei forum di musicisti, inviato i nostri demo e chiesto alla gente di cantare per noi, è stato davvero bello e anche molto divertente e abbiamo stretto dei contatti duraturi! Ad un certo punto ci siamo imbattuti in Francis Soto! Ha attirato subito la nostra attenzione (dopo che ci siamo abituati al suo accento), perché sapeva esattamente cosa voleva e cosa non voleva in una telefonata, e anche il suo curriculum musicale era davvero impressionante. Gli ho mandato un demo, che è arrivato il giorno dopo, completamente cantato (ha anche un suo studio) con un mega hook, ritornelli fissi, ci ha colpito nei nervi e soprattutto ha superato di molto le nostre aspettative!
In cosa differisce la sua voce da quella dei suoi predecessori?
Torsten: Francis ha una gamma completamente diversa! Canta più profondamente ed è più cavernoso! Lo chiamo sempre cinghiale!
Avete scelto “Hard Rain” come titolo, ha qualche riferimento all’ecologia?
Francis: Riguarda molto più il Covid e tutte le strane sensazioni che sono piovute su di noi, come una “forte pioggia”. Fondamentalmente, l’album parla di mettersi in pausa e di dare importanza ai piccoli dettagli della vita che abbiamo perso in tutti questi anni.
Le canzoni sono legate tra loro da un filo conduttore?
Francis: Si parla di delusione, disperazione, depressione, per coloro che sono rimasti soli. Alla fine, è la speranza a tenerci uniti.
Il primo singolo estratto dall’album è “Heavy Ride”, perché avete scelto questa canzone?
Francis: “Heavy Ride” è la canzone che meglio descrive l’intero album. L’energia, la rabbia, la depressione si possono trovare in questa canzone. Naturalmente è anche una song molto bella, piena di potenza e gioia di suonare
Sarete in tournée nei prossimi mesi?
Torsten: Stiamo cercando di programmare qualcosa per l’autunno, vediamo! Ma abbiamo già alcuni spettacoli nei festival prenotati per l’estate! Se qualche booker o organizzatore di festival ci sta leggendo, ci contatta a info@ivorytower.de!

Welcome to Il Raglio del Mule, many fans no longer hoped for it, yet the new Ivory Tower album is here. Why do you always make us wait so long for a new full length?
Sven: Hey, it’s nice to be here! Yes, we actually would have preferred to release the album sooner! But there was the corona pandemic and so everything was shut down, then we parted ways with our old singer and had to find a new one – which we managed to do very well – and then we had delays in the studio and financing problems, so we had to start crowdfunding first! But in the end everything worked out!
Your first two full lengths are unanimously considered among the masterpieces of power/progressive metal, yet in almost 30 years of career you have only released six albums? Do you have any regrets?
Sven: Do you mean artistically? No! There was a permanent development of the music, the skills expanded, the life experience grew, all these are aspects that flowed into the songwriting! Of course we would have liked to be able to produce in bigger studios with a bigger budget, but you have to look at it all realistically and come to terms with the circumstances!
In this new album you have a new singer, Lord Francis Soto: how did you come into contact with him?
Sven: And where do you meet someone today? In the net! So we went out to sea in a fishing boat and put out our trawl. Meaning we advertised incognito on social media, wrote directly to singers in musician forums, sent out our demos and had people sing to them, that was pretty cool and also very funny and we made some lasting contacts! At some point we came across Francis Soto! He immediately caught our attention (after we got used to his dialect), because he knew exactly what he wanted and what he didn’t want in a phone call, and his musical CV was also very impressive. I sent him a demo, which came back the next day, completely sung (he also has his own studio) with a mega hook, set choruses, hit our nerve and above all it exceeded our expectations many times over!
How does his voice differ from that of his predecessors?
Torsten: Francis has a completely different range! he sings deeper and earthier! I always call that a rock pig!
You chose “Hard Rain” as the title, does it have any reference to ecology?
Francis: It’s much more about the Covid time and all the strange impressions that rained down on us like a “heavy rain”. Basically, the album is about pausing and giving importance to the small details in life again has been lost to us all these years.
Are the songs linked together by a common thread?
Francis: It’s about disappointment, despair, depression, for those who have been left alone. In the end, it is hope that keeps us together.
The first single from the album is “Heavy Ride”, why did you choose this song?
Francis: “Heavy Ride” is the song that best describes the whole album. The energy, the anger, the depression can be found in this song. Of course it’s also a very good song, full of power and joy of playing.
Will you be on tour in the next few months?
