La ciurma della drakkar degli Ensiferum continua il proprio giro del mondo con la solita efficienza, conscia dell’importanza che il mare ha nella vita di ogni marinaio. Capitan Sami Hinkka e i suoi con “Thalassic” (Metal Blade) hanno deciso di rendere omaggio proprio al prezioso elemento da cui è partita la vita sul nostro pianeta.
Benvenuto Sami, potresti presentare ai lettori italiani il tuo nuovo album “Thalassic”?
“Thalassic” è l’ottavo album degli Ensiferum e, oltre ad essere un disco d’assalto, è il primo a presentare il nostro nuovo cantante / tastierista Pekka Montin ed è anche la prima volta che proponiamo un concept.
Il 10 luglio Ensiferum terrete il releasy party virtuale: potresti anticipare qualcosa sullo “Studio Live” show?
Abbiamo creato una setlist molto interessante con un sacco di canzoni nuove, vecchie e rare. Questo è uno spettacolo molto particolare perché non ci sarà alcun pubblico. Gli Ensiferum sono sempre stati “una band dal vivo” e abbiamo i fan più folli del mondo, quindi ora che manca l’interazione con la folla, abbiamo dovuto inventarci qualcos’altro per far partecipare le persone al concerto. I fan possono inviarci domande in anticipo e risponderemo a quelle durante le pause del concerto e alla fine ci sederemo e chatteremo con il pubblico. Sarà qualcosa di completamente diverso ma sono sicuro che sarà molto divertente per tutti.
Thalassic è una parola di greco antico e significa “relativo ai mari”: qual è il ruolo del mare ai nostri giorni in cui gli aerei dominano i cieli e l’uomo viaggio nello spazio?
Heh, questa è una domanda troppo difficile. Diciamo solo che senza acqua non c’è vita, questo è il ruolo più importante del mare.
Thalassic deriva dal greco antico e invece Ensiferum è una parola latina, c’è quasi una sorta di connessione tra voi e i nostri avi romani: cosa ne pensi del mio Paese?
La parola “talassico” si trova anche nel dizionario inglese, ovviamente la sua radice è il greco. L’Italia è un Paese molto carino, ho molti bei ricordi legati ai concerti che abbiamo tenuto da voi. Spero davvero che potremo tornarci presto.
Ci sono influenze folk mediterranee nel nuovo album?
Se intendi musicalmente, immagino non molte. Forse potrà essere il tema del prossimo album? Vedremo…
Tornando il passato, quali brani del tuo catalogo ti piacciono di più dal vivo?
Oh, questa è difficile. Ce ne sono così tanti, ma uno che mi manca un po’ “Warrior Without a War”.
Ho letto una tua dichiarazione su questo nuovo album, in cui l’hai definito un “altro passo avanti musicalmente”, potresti spiegare perché?
Penso che in questo album abbiamo utilizzato tutto il nostro know-how accumulato nelle precedenti uscite e che l’abbiamo sfrutto al meglio. Anche la produzione e il missaggio sono abbastanza diversi rispetto ai nostri album precedenti.
Quanto è difficile dopo venticinque anni innovare il vostro suono?
Per gli Ensiferum questo non è affatto difficile perché tutti noi abbiamo tanti gusti musicali diversi e tutti siamo molto aperti verso le nuove idee, questo ci consente di mantenere il nostro processo di composizione molto fresco.
Inizialmente siete stati inseriti nel calderone del metal estremo, ritieni che questa categorizzazione nel 2020 sia ancora valida?
Dipende davvero da cosa intendi con extreme metal. Non penso che questo termine sia mai stato usato ufficialmente sulla nostra band. Se ci paragoni a Lady Gaga, sì, si potrebbe pensare che la nostra musica sia molto estrema, ma se guardi i gruppi che suonano death metal tecnico (o quella cosa che la gente chiama così, eh eh eh), la nostra musica sembra molto leggera!
E del nuovo singolo “Andromeda” che mi dici?
Racconta il mito greco di Andromeda. È una delle mie canzoni preferite nel nuovo album.
Da “Andromeda” è stato tratto anche il vostro nuovo video: ma tu preferisci “guardare” o ascoltare musica?
Personalmente non mi piacciono molto i video musicali, ma ovviamente è bello fare uno o due per album.
A parte suonare il metal, che tipo di cose ti piace fare?
Mi piace guardare documentari, film, serie TV e cerco anche di leggere il più possibile, ma negli ultimi anni è diventato difficile trovare il tempo per farlo quanto mi piacerebbe.

Welcome, could you introduce to our readers your new album “Thalassic”?
”Thalassic” is Ensiferum’s eighth album and besides of being asskicking album, it is the first album to introduce our new clean singer/keyboard player Pekka Montin and it’s this is the first time we had kinda theme on an album.
On July 10th Ensiferum will host a record release: could you anticipate something about the “Studio Live” show?
We have come up with very cool setlist with bunch of new, old and rare songs. This is very interesting show for us because there won’t be any audience. Ensiferum has always been ”a live band” and we have the craziest fans in the world so now that the interaction with the crowd will be missing we had to come up with something else to get people being part of the gig. Fans can send questions to us in advance and we’ll answer to those during the breaks we have on the gig and in the end we will sit down and chat with the people. It’s gonna be something totally different but I’m sure that it will be lots of fun for everyone.
“Thalassic” is word from ancient Greek and means “relating to seas”: which is the role of the sea in our days?
Heh, that is way too big question. Let’s just say that without water there is no life. So that’s how big role seas have.
Thalassic is from ancient Greek and Ensiferum is a latin word, this a sort of connection between your band and Italy: what do you think about my Country?
The word ”thalassic” can also be found from English dictionary, obviously the root is Greek. Italy is very nice country, lots of good gig memories from there. I really hope we can return there soon.
Are there Mediterean folk influences in the new album?
If you mean musically, I guess not that much. Maybe that will be the theme for the next album? Let’s see…
Which songs of you back catalogue do you like most playing live?
Oh, this is difficult. There are so many but one that I’m missing a bit it ”Warrior Without A War”.
I read your declaration about this new album, you defined it an “another step ahead musically”, could you explain why?
I think on this album we utilized our know-how from the previous album sessions much better than ever before. Also the production and mixing are quite different than on our previous albums.
How is difficult after 25 years to innovate your sound?
For Ensiferum that is not difficult at all because we all have so different kind of music taste and everyone is very openminded with new ideas so that keeps our composing process very fresh.
Actually, you consider you sound still extreme metal?
It really depends what you mean with extreme metal? I don’t think that this term has been ever used officially about our band? If you compare us to Lady Gaga, yes one might think that our music is very extreme but if you look at the bands who play technical deathmetal (or what ever people call this genre, heh), our music sounds very easy going, heh.
What’s about your new single “Andromeda”?
It tells about the Greek myth of Andromeda. It’s one of my favorite songs on the new album.
“Andromeda” is your new video too: do you prefer to “watch” or to listen to music?
Personally I’m not that much into music videos but of course it’s cool to make one or two per album.
Outside of playing metal, what kinds of things do you enjoy doing?
I like watching documentaries, movies, TV-series and I also try to read as much as possible but during the last years it’s been hard to find time to do it as much I would love to.
