Un orgoglioso Nige Rockett ci ha parlato del nuovo album dei suoi Onslaught, “Generation Antichrist” (AFM Records), senza dimenticare di reclamare il proprio ruolo di prime mover del movimento thrash internazionale. Siamo certi che gli inglesi con questa nuova opera sapranno conquistare nuovi fan anche tra le fila della generazione dell’Anticristo.
Benvenuto Nige, sei nella band dal primo demo, quindi nessuno come te può dirmi come si posizione il nuovo “Generation Antichrist” all’interno della discografia degli Onslaught…
Ciao grazie, come te la passi.? Spero che tu stia bene in questo strano momento. Sì, la nostra è sicuramente una lunga storia e il tempo è passato rapidamente: per me “Generation Antichrist” è proprio lì tra i nostri migliori “assalti”. Senza alcun dubbio è il mio album preferito, perché ha un feeling vecchia scuola ma con una brutalità moderna che è necessaria nella scena musicale di oggi. Siamo tornati alle nostre origini e alle nostre prime influenze, abbiamo addotto un approccio crudo e più semplicistico per il songwriting e in fase di registrazione ha funzionato tutto incredibilmente bene. Le persone stanno impazzendo per il nostro nuovo materiale e per come suona.
È questa la generazione dell’Anticristo citata nel titolo?
Sì, è sicuramente questa. Il cristianesimo sta perdendo potere e influenza in questa epoca moderna e credo tra 50 – 60 anni la religione come la intendiamo noi cesserà di esistere. Guardo i miei figli e i loro amici, non hanno alcun interesse per la religione, non hanno mai preso una bibbia, non hanno mai detto una preghiera, non sono istruiti a riguardo, per loro non significa nulla: sono la generazione dell’Anticristo.
Ti andrebbe di presentare i nuovi membri?
La lineup assalto del 2020 è Dave Garnett – Voce, Nige Rockett – Chitarra, Wayne Dorman – Chitarra, Jeff Williams – Basso e James Perry – Batteria. Colgo l’occasione per dare il benvenuto al nostro nuovo cantante “Dave Garnett” che ha ammirevolmente preso il posto lasciato libero in un momento delicato da Sy Keeler. Dave si è trovato con poco preavviso a dover registrare la voce per “Generation Antichrist” e ha fatto una performance incredibile, ha portato l’album a un livello di aggressività superiore, regalando nuova energia al suono degli Onslaught.
Effettivamente la sua voce mi ricorda quella di Chuck Billy, penso che dia alla vostra musica un tocco Testament, che ne pensi?
No, non la penso come te: gli Onslaught si sono formati qualche tempo prima dei Testament, e non ci lasciamo influenzare da band che hanno effettivamente seguito le nostre orme. Chuck è sicuramente un grande cantante e lo stesso vale per Dave, ma per me hanno stili diversi e a sé stanti, penso che Chuck sia più melodico mentre Dave ha un approccio molto più aggressivo.
A proposito di aggressività, il nuovo album è brutale e violento, dove trovi dopo 40 anni di carriera la forza di scrivere grandi canzoni thrash?
Grazie! Adoro creare musica aggressiva. Il mondo che ci circonda in questo momento certamente mi dà l’ispirazione per essere costantemente arrabbiato e la musica è il modo migliore per esprimere i miei sentimenti. Ogni anno sembra esserci un nuovo problema che dobbiamo affrontare nelle nostre vite. Più invecchio e più divento più arrabbiato, quindi gli Onslaught raggiungeranno livelli più alti di brutalità con i prossimi dischi.
“A Perfect Day to Die” è uscito come singolo nel 2019, ma nell’album la troviamo in una versione differente, come mai?
“A Perfect Day to Die” è stato il primo singolo ad essere pubblicato dal nuovo album e quella registrazione presentava la voce di Keeler, quindi quando Sy è andato via e Dave si è unito agli Onslaught, abbiamo semplicemente ri-registrato la voce per creare la nuova versione. Non potevamo avere due cantanti diversi sull’album, avrebbe reso il lavoro meno omogeneo. Dave ha veramente fatto un ottimo lavoro.
A chi ti riferisci quando parli di “Addicted to the Smell of Death”?
Questa canzone parla di un serial killer americano chiamato “H H Holmes”, si presume che abbia commesso 200 omicidi. Si dice che Holmes abbia prima scarnificato e poi sezionato le vittime, per poi bruciare i corpi in una fornace!
Direi di tornare ad avvenimenti più sereni, ricordi il tuo spettacolo a Bari del 2008?
Sì, certo! Credo di poter ricordare ogni singolo spettacolo in Italia, quello del 2008 si è tenuto al “Target Club”, se non erro. Bari è davvero un bel posto e ci piacerebbe molto tornare, ma credo che il Target sia chiuso ora. Magari c’è un nuovo locale che potrebbe ospitarci: ogni volta e ovunque in Italia accade sempre qualcosa di buono per Onslaught!

Welcome Nige, your are in the band form the first demo, how do you collocate the new album, “Generation Antichrist”, in a panoramic view of your discography?
Hi, Thanks you. How are you doing.? I hope you are safe and well in this strange time… Yes its been a long history for sure and time has passed so quickly… For me ‘Generation Antichrist’ is right up there with the best “Onslaught” releases, it’s certainly my favourite album for sure… It has that old-school vibe but with a modern day brutality that is necessary in todays music scene. We went right back to our roots & early influences for this album, we took a raw and more simplistic approach with the songwriting and recording and it’s worked amazingly well, people are totally digging the new material and the new sound.
Is this the generation antichrist, and if yes why?
Yeah this is definitely the “Generation Antichrist”. Christianity is losing its power and influence in this modern age and i believe in 50 – 60 years time religion as we know it will cease to exit. I look at my kids and their friends and they have no interest in religion whatsoever, they have never picked up a bible, they have never said a prayer, they are not taught about religion at school, it means nothing to them so, for me they are the Generation of Anti-Christs…
Could you introduce your new members?
Onslaught line up 2020: Dave Garnett – Vocals; Nige Rockett – Guitar; Wayne Dorman – Guitar; Jeff Williams – Bass; James Perry – Drums. Yeah sure, please welcome our new vocalist ‘Dave Garnett’ who has admirably filled the very big shoes left by ‘Sy Keeler’. Dave has come in at such short notice to record the vocals on “Generation Antichrist” and made an incredible performance, he’s taken
the album to another level of aggression and brought a whole new energy to the Onslaught sound…
The voice of David remembers me the one of Chuck Billy and I think it gives to your music a touch of Testament flavour, do you agree?
No, i do not see that myself, Onslaught were formed sometime before Testament so we do not take any influences from bands that have actually followed in our path. Chuck is a great vocalist for sure and so is Dave of course but to me they have different styles in their own right, I think Chuck is more melodic whereas Dave has a far more aggressive approach.
The new album is brutal and violence, where do you find after 40 years of career the strength to write great thrash songs?
Thanks!! I just love creating aggressive music. The world around us right now certainly gives us the inspiration to be constantly angry and music is the best way for me to express my feelings. Every year there seems to be a new problem we have to face in our lives and the older i get the angrier I get, so Onslaught will continue to reach new levels of brutality with every record we make.
What’s about the new version of “A Perfect Day to Die”?
Well as you know ‘A Perfect Day to Die’ was the first single to be released from the new album and of course this recording featured Sy Keeler, so when Sy left and Dave joined Onslaught we simply re-recorded the vocals to make the new version. We couldn’t have two different singers on the album as that would make no sense at all, the continuity had be there and Dave has made an amazing performance on the song.
Who is ‘Addicted to the Smell of Death’?
This song is about an American serial killer called ‘H H Holmes’ who is alleged to have committed unto 200 murders. It was said Holmes would strip flesh and dissect the victims and then burn
the bodies in a furnace!
Do you remember your show in Bari in 2008?
Yes of course, I think i can recall every single show in Italy that ‘Onslaught has ever played…. 2008 at the ‘Target Club’ if i remember correctly. Bari was a real nice place and we would love to return but i think the Target club maybe closed now… Maybe there’s a new venue, which would be cool. Any time, anywhere in Italy is good for Onslaught!!
