I Mörk Gryning, dopo un lungo silenzio, sono tornati. Non un momento felicissimo per riprendere la strada interrotta anni orsono, ma il gruppo non sembra spaventato dal blocco imposto dal Covid 19 ed è pronto a lanciare il proprio guanto di sfida al mondo con il nuovo album “Hinsides vrede” (Season of Mist).

Draakh Kimera, nel 2017, dopo diversi festival, avete riunito la band e firmato un nuovo contratto con la Season of Mist. Dopo tre anni hai un nuovo album, ma non puoi suonarlo dal vivo!Che situazione assurda!?
Sì, davvero, fa schifo! Tutti noi artisti siamo nella stessa situazione e non ci resta altro da fare che adeguarci Ma abbiamo iniziato a provare una nuova scaletta però: sarà una carneficina!

Si dice spesso che Mörk Gryning si siano sciolti nel 2005 a causa di una sopraggiunta mancanza di interesse per il metal estremo/black, cosa è cambiato ora? Come spieghi il vostro nuovo interesse per la musica estrema?
Abbiamo sempre cercato nuovi percorsi nella vita e nella musica. A quel tempo, Goth Gorgon ne era stufo. Personalmente, non ho mai perso interesse per la musica estrema, ma avevo bisogno di fare qualcos’altro. Allora anche alcune circostanze della vita ci hanno spinto verso quella decisione. Ma come si suol dire, le radici sono sempre lì ed è questo che mostriamo in questo nuovo album.

Hai trovato subito la vecchia alchimia con i tuoi vecchi compagni di band?
Sì, certamente. Ci conosciamo da così tanto tempo, quindi è stato facile tornare insieme.

Qual è la prima canzone di “Hinsides vrede” che avete scritto?
La canzone di apertura, “Fältherren”. È stato scritta circa sette anni fa, quando sul tavolo c’erano le prime discussioni sull’eventualità di riunire la band.

Sono state scritte tutte le canzoni per questo album o alcune sono tracce inedite delle uscite precedenti?
Tutte le canzoni sono state scritte per questo album.

Puoi spiegarmi il vero significato della copertina?
L’idea è venuta da Goth Gorgon perché è molto interessato ai motivi geometrici. È una specie di
mandala demoniaco. L’idea è prende ispirazione dal testo di “Sleeping in the Embers” basato sul Libro dell’Apocalisse. “I sigilli sono stati aperti… il distruttore, il demolitore, Abaddon” questo è lo spunto. L’artista dietro questo lavoro è il nostro batterista dal vivo C-G (che ha suonato anche la batteria in due canzoni del nuovo album: “Fältherren” e “Black Spirit”).

Dopo tutti questi anni che che opinione hai del tanto controverso album “Pieces of Primal Expressionism”?
Sono molto orgoglioso di quell’album. Penso che abbiamo fatto qualcosa di abbastanza unico in quel momento, ma nessuno era davvero preparato per un disco del genere con la nostra firma. Ma posso in qualche modo capire il “dibattito” attorno ad esso. Ci sono parti che sono non necessarie lunghe e forse non si adattano, ma ci sono anche alcuni passaggi e riff che sono i migliori che abbiamo mai fatto. Per esempio l’attacco nella canzone “On the Verge of Prime Divinity”, questa è pura estasi! Credo che quell’album fosse in anticipo sui tempi in molti modi. Ma oggi farei alcuni riarrangiamenti su molte canzoni.

“Tusen år har gått …” oggi è considerato una pietra miliare, ma quando è stato rilasciato nel 1995, eravate consci cosa hai fatto?
No, non ne avevamo la minima idea. A quel tempo i MG erano solo un side-project per noi, avevamo le nostre altre band che pensavamo sarebbero diventate molto più grandi. Ma guardando indietro, oggi posso in qualche modo capire il motivo per cui ha raggiunto quello status.

Mörk Gryning, after a long silence, they are back. Not a great moment to resume the journey interrupted years ago, but the group does not seem frightened by the stop imposed by Covid 19 and is ready to throwing down the gauntlet to the world by the new album “Hinsides vrede” (Season of Mist).

Draakh Kimera, in 2017 after several festivals, you reunited the band and signed a new deal with Season of Mist. After three years you have a new album, but you can’t play it live! Such are weird circumstances!?
Yes indeed, that sucks! All of us artists are in the same situation and there´s nothing to do than to face the facts. But we have started to rehearse a new setlist though. It´s going to be a killer!

It is often stated that Mörk Gryning was dissolved in 2005 due to a lack of interest in extreme/black metal metal, what is changed now? How can you explain your new interest in extreme music?
We’ve always been discovering new paths as persons and in the music. At that time, Goth Gorgon was fed up with it. Personally, I´ve never lost interest in extreme music, but I needed to do something else. Some circumstances in life also made this decision back then. But as they say, the roots are always there and that´s what we´re showing on this new album.

Did you find immediately the old alchemy with your old bandmates?
Yes indeed. We´ve known each other for so long now so it was easy getting back together.

Which is the first song from “Hinsides vrede” you wrote?
It was the opening song “Fältherren”. It was written for some seven years ago already, when the first discussions of re-uniting the band was at the table.

Were all the songs written for this album or some of them are unreleased tracks from the previous releases?
All songs were written for this album.

Could you explain the real meaning of the cover artwork?
The idea came from Goth Gorgon as he´s very much into geometric patterns. It’s a kind of demonic mandala. The idea is taken based by the lyrics from “Sleeping in the embers” based by the Book of Revelation. “The gates were opened….the destroyer, the eraser, Abaddon” so there you have the cohesion. The artist behind this is our live drummer C-G (who´s also playing the drums on two songs on the new album: “Fältherren” and “Black spirit”).

After all these years how do you look back on the much debated album “Pieces of Primal Expressionism”?
I´m very proud of that album. I think we did something quite unique at that time, but no one was really prepared for such an album coming out from us. But I can sort of understand the “debate” around it. There are parts that are unnecessary long and maybe didn´t fit in, but also there are some parts and riff which are the best ones we´ve ever made. For exaple the stick in the song “On the Verge of Prime Divinity”, that´s pure ecstasy! I believe that album was ahead of it´s time in many ways. But I´d do some re-arrangements on a lot of songs today.

“Tusen år har gått…” today is considerate a milestone, but when it was released in 1995, were you aware of what you did?
No, we didn´t have any clue. At that time MG was just a project for us and we had our other bands which we thought was going to be much bigger. But looking back today, I can sort of understand the reason why it reached that status.
