Benvenuto Andri, 2014-2017-2020: regolare come un orologio ogni tre anni avete pubblicato un nuovo album! È solo un caso o il vostro processo di scrittura ha bisogno di questi tempi?
Grazie per avermi ospitato! Non ci avevo davvero mai pensato, ma sì, in generale ci prendiamo un po’ di tempo dopo aver finito un album per iniziare quello successivo. La velocità del processo di solito cresce dopo circa un anno e poi aumenta esponenzialmente con l’avvicinarsi delle nostre scadenze. Di solito abbiamo alcune idee sparse all’inizio, anche una o due intere canzoni, e il resto arriva molto velocemente tutto insieme di solito un paio di mesi prima di entrare in studio.
Non capisco i tuoi testi ma amo i panorama ispirati della tua musica, ma non pensi che usare la lingua inglese garantirebbe ai tuoi fan un’esperienza più completa?
Non necessariamente, penso che non capirebbero subito i testi e il dover lavorare sulla comprensione da alla musica un’ulteriore profondità mistica. Chi è estremamente curioso può sempre provare a tradurre, ma prenderei tutto ciò che si ottiene da Google con le pinze. Un’altra cosa è il ritmo dell’islandese, è piuttosto diverso dall’inglese, e abbiamo la nostra tradizione di prosa, che in realtà enfatizza quel ritmo. È qualcosa che usiamo anche quando scriviamo, anche se un po’ più liberamente.
Di cosa parlano i testi?
Toccano un’ampia varietà di argomenti, ma direi che il tema generale sono la disperazione e la depressione, ma con un pizzico di speranza e con un viaggio attraverso paesaggi grandiosi, anche se inospitali.
Si afferma spesso che il terzo album è il più importante per una band, sei pienamente soddisfatto o credi di avere ancora delle potenzialità inespresse e una lunga strada da percorrere.
Penso che finalmente abbiamo ottenuto il suono che volevamo e un buon mix tra violenza, depressione e bellezza. È difficile dire dove andremo da ora in poi, dal momento che il futuro è incerto, ma continueremo a scrivere musica, al di là di come possa andare a finire.
Al di fuori del black metal, ti ispiri ai Sigur Rós?
No.
Una delle pietre miliari della vostra carriera è stato il concerto al Wacken, dopo aver vinto la Metal Battle locale. Cosa ricordi di quel concerto e come è cambiato il vostro atteggiamento dal vivo dopo quel concerto?
Vedere il sipario aperto e circa seimila persone è stato sicuramente uno shock. Quello che abbiamo consegnato era tutt’altro che perfetto, ma abbiamo imparato molto e incontrato molte persone disponibili che ci hanno fornito feedback e critiche costruttive, e penso che abbiamo portato alcune loro conoscenze con noi a casa.
Quanto è difficile promuovere un nuovo album senza spettacoli dal vivo?
Penso che sia troppo presto per dirlo in questo momento e fortunatamente il mondo digitale mitiga alcune di queste difficoltà.
Volete trasmettere in streaming il release concert?
Questa è una buona domanda. Penso che dipenderà dal fatto se saremo in grado di suonare o meno uno spettacolo dal vivo con il pubblico in Islanda. Se le cose andranno meglio, potremmo prenderlo in considerazione.

Welcome Andri B, 2014 – 2017 -2020: regular like a clockwork every three years you released a new album! Is this just the case or does your songwriting process need this time?
Thanks for having me! I hadn’t really thought of that, but yes, in general we take a bit of time after finishing an album to start on the next. The speed of the process usually picks up after about a year and then exponentially rises as our deadlines approach. We usually have a few loose ideas in the beginning, even one or two whole songs, and the rest comes really fast together usually a couple of months before entering the studio.
I don’t understand your lyrics but I love the landscape of your music, but don’t you think using English language would guarantee to your fans a more complete experience?
Not necessarily, I think not understanding the lyrics right away and having to work for that understanding gives the music an additional depth of mystique. Those who are extremely curious can always try and translate, but I’d take anything you get from Google with a grain of salt. Another thing is the rhythm of Icelandic, it’s pretty different from English, and we have our own tradition of prose, which actually emphasizes that rhythm. It’s something we also use when writing, albeit a bit loosely.
What are the lyrics about?
They touch on a wide variety of topics, but I’d say the general theme is desperation and depression, but with a sliver of hope and a journey through grand, if inhospitable landscapes.
It is often stated third album is the most important for a band, are you fully satisfied or have unexpressed potentials and a long road ahead to walk.
I think we’ve finally gotten the sound that we wanted, and a good mix between violence, depression and beauty. It’s always hard to say where we’ll go from now, since the future is uncertain, but we will keep on writing an releasing music, however it may turn out.
Outside black metal, are you inspired by Sigur Rós?
No.
One of the milestone of your career is your concert at Wacken, after you won your local Metal Battle. What do you remember about that gig and how is changed your live attitude after that concert?
Seeing the curtain open and somewhere around six-thousand people was definitely quite a shock. What we delivered was far from perfect but we learned a lot and met a lot of helpful people who gave us feedback and constructive criticism, and I think we took some knowledge from them with us back home.
How is difficult to promote a new album without live shows?
I think it’s too early to say right now, and luckily the digital world mitigates some of these difficulties.
Will you stream a release show?
That’s a good question. I think it will depend on whether we’ll be able to play a live show with an audience in Iceland. If things get better there, we might look into it.
