La band prog-tech-thrash guidata dall’ex frontman dei Voivod, Eric Forrest, è tornata con il suo quinto album, “Mindbender” (Mighty Music), probabilmente il più oscuro della propria discografia.
Benvenuto Eric, ricordi il tuo concerto a Bari nel 2015?
Sì, certo! Persone fantastiche, fan, organizzazione, catering. Ci siamo divertiti un mondo! Ci divertiamo sempre in Italia, è un grande mercato per noi e non vedo l’ora di tornare e suonare in futuro supportando il nostro nuovo album “Mindbender”.
Ti stai esibendo attualmente o sei fermo a causa della pandemia?
Bene, ci siamo fermati per finire la registrazione, mixare, masterizzare, mettere a punto tutto, stiamo per girare un nuovo video la prossima settimana e ci prepariamo per l’uscita del 19 novembre. Abbiamo tutte le intenzioni di suonare spettacoli nel 2022, ma siamo ancora in attesa di capire come il NWO si regolerà per quanto riguarda i tour, senza dove essere poi costretti a cancellare nessuno spettacolo. Fondamentalmente, stiamo facendo tutto ciò che è possibile dato che a tutti noi piace esibirsi dal vivo e in tour.
Quanto è importante l’attività live per una band come la tua che ha un nuovo album in uscita?
Beh, è molto importante a livello personale e professionale. Tuttavia, stiamo tutti incrociando le dita per vedere cosa accadrà nel 2022, come ogni metallaro del pianeta.
Quali obiettivi speri di raggiungere con “Mindbender”?
Fare finalmente un video per supportare il nostro album. Per motivi economici, non l’abbiamo fatto prima, è un peccato ma questa è la vita. Quindi un video e un altro tour europeo, si spera, e qualche apparizione ai festival sarebbe anche bello, il tempo ci dirà se sarà possibile…
“Mindbender” forse è il tuo album più oscuro, sei d’accordo con me?
In una certa misura sì! Innanzi tutto, questa è di gran lunga la migliore produzione degli E-Force! Ha quella caratteristica vibrazione degli E-Force, tuttavia ci sono alcune tracce uniche e molto speciali, con una certa varietà: tutte le canzoni suonano in modo diverso, non sono solo 10 canzoni veloci. Capisci cosa intendo? Ci sono tracce veloci, tracce pesanti ricche di groove e con alcune idee bizzarre, idee inquietanti. Così come lo sono alcuni degli ospiti speciali che suonano la chitarra solista in alcune canzoni. È una specie di concept album come “The Curse” e “Demonikhol”, i testi parlano di cospirazioni, ipocrisia e misteri che possono condizionare la vita di una persona. E’ abbastanza ironico, è in qualche modo correlato al controllo mentale e a ciò che sta accadendo in questi ultimi due anni. Posso dire che è l’album più oscuro degli E-Force? Beh, suppongo che spetti all’ascoltatore decidere. Ma è fottutamente malvagio, non temere!
La line-up è stata stravolta, avete lavorato come una vera band o consideri “Mindbender” una sorta di tuo album solista?
Un po’ entrambe le cose: abbiamo la stessa formazione dal 2017: Patrick Friedrich batteria (oltre che ingegnere, produttore di quattro album degli E-Force), Sebastian Chiffot (Evilness) chitarra solista, Javi Flz (Graveyard) chitarra ritmica. Abbiamo fatto circa 25 show in 8 paesi come E-Force “Voivod revisited” nel 2018. Di solito compongo tutti i testi, la musica, non gli assoli di chitarra ma do delle direttive generali su ciò che è necessario fare, un’idea di base della batteria, che viene poi implementata da un vero batterista. Quindi in questo album ho composto otto canzoni, una Patrick e Seb (musica: testi miei) e ho co-scritto la canzone “Insect” (Voivod). I miei ragazzi sanno che ho una visione geenrale di ciò che voglio fare in termini di direzione e di identità degli E-Force, tuttavia aggiungono loro altri pezzi al puzzle per ottenere il risultato finale. Alla fine ognuno fa parte della band apportando il proprio contributo in molti modi diversi, quindi nonostante gli E-Force siano un’entità che ho creato 20 anni fa, alla fine si tratta di un lavoro di squadra.
La tracklist include la cover di “Insect”. Qual è la tua canzone preferita della tua era Voivod?
Beh, ne ho molte, ma “Project X” è probabilmente la mia preferita. Tuttavia, abbiamo deciso di registrare “Insect” perché è più popolare, e anche una grande traccia, ma è anche un tributo per il suo 25 anniversario ed è riconducibile a quello che ho detto prima del progetto E-Force “Voivod revisited”, che mia ha portato a fare cambi di membri e di etichetta. Ho visto lo spettacolo “Scorpions revisited” di Uli J roth e ho pensato, wow! Che bella idea, ha pure molte richieste, tutto perfetto!
Dopo 20 anni di carriera con gli E-Force (esibizioni in 20 paesi, oltre 250 spettacoli e diverse apparizioni in festival) senti ancora l’ombra del Voivod su di te? Ti dà fastidio che vengano spesso menzionati quando si tratta della tua band?
Assolutamente no, in realtà, ho solo continuato a fare quello che stavo facendo con i Voivod, ce l’ho nel sangue dopo essere stato nella band per sette anni. Ho vissuto e imparato molto a quei tempi, quindi negli ultimi 20 anni ho semplicemente guidato la nave come e dove posso. Essere l’ex dei Voivod ha aiutato immensamente la mia carriera.
Vivi ancora in Francia? Pensi che in qualche modo essere in Europa influenzi la tua musica?
Sì, è impossibile dire che non sia un’esperienza incredibile, anche se credo che avrei composto comunque la stessa musica, non credo che incida dove vivo.

Welcome Eric, do you remember your gig in Bari in 2015?
Yes, I do ,great people, fans, organization, catering. We had a blast! We always have a great time in Italy, it’s a great market for us and cant wait to comeback and play in the future supporting our new album “Mindbender”.
Are you currently performing or are you stopped due to the pandemic?
Well, we kind of stopped to finish the recording, mix, master, fine tune everything, we are shooting a new video next week (12 oct), and getting ready for the 19 nov release. We have every intention to play shows in 2022, still waiting to see how this NWO turns out with regards to touring without having to cancel any shows etc. Basically, do what is possible as we all enjoy performing live and touring.
How important is live activity for a band like yours that has a new album out?
Well, it’s very important from a personal and professional level.This is what we do and enjoy when and how we can. However, we are all crossing our fingers to see whats going to happen in 2022 like every metalhead on the planet. We will see what happens and make the best of what we can .
What new goals do you hope to achieve with “Mindbender”?
To finally do a video to support our album. Due to economic reasons, we didn’t do it before, it’s too bad but that’s life. So a video and another European tour hopefully and some festival appearances would be nice also, time will tell …..
“Mindbender” maybe is your darkest album, do you agree with me?
To a certain degree yes! This is by far , the best E-Force production of any E-Force album to start. It has that consistent E-Force vibe signature ,however there are some very special unique tracks on this one, a bit of variety for everyone all songs sound different , not just 10 fast songs. Know what I mean? There are fast tracks, heavy groove tracks, and some bizzarre ideas, creepy, haunting ideas on this album, as well as some special guests playing lead guitar on a few songs . Its kind of another concept album like “The Curse”, “Demonikhol2, this one lyrically is about conspiracies, hypocrisy, and mysteries that can go on in one s life ironic enough, kind of relates to what is happening in this mind control type of living in the past 2 yrs I suppose you could say darkest E-Force album? Well I suppose that’s up to the listener to decide. But it’s evil as fuck, no worries!
The line-up has been turned upside down, have you worked as a real band or do you consider “Mindbender” a sort of your solo album?
A little bit of both, I’ve had the same line-up since 2017 feat: Patrick Friedrich drums (+ engineer, producer of 4 E-Force albums), Sebastian Chiffot (Evilness) lead guitar, Javi Flz (Graveyard) rhythm guitar. We did about 25 shows in 8 countries as E-Force «Voivod revisited » in 2018. I normally compose all the lyrics, music, not guitar solos but a general direction of whats needed, basic drum idea, which gets replaced by a real drummer. So on this album I composed 8 songs Patrick did 1 as did Seb (music: lyrics me) and co-wrote « Insect » (Voivod) song. My guys know I have a vision of what I want to do in terms of direction and the E-Force identity, however they add there piece s to the puzzle and it is what it is. In the end everyone is part of the band adding there contribution in many different ways, so despite E-Force is what i created 20 yrs ago, in the end its a team effort.
The tracklist includes the cover version of “Insect”. Which is your favorite song of your Voivod era?
Well, I have many but “Project X” is probably my favorite. However, we decided to record “Insect” as its more popular, and also a great track but its a 25 anniversary plus special as it relates to what I said before E-Force « Voivod revisited » of which I decided to do between member and label changes. I seen Uli J. Roth «Scorpions revisited» show and thought , wow! What a great idea, of which got a lot of demand, all good!
After 20 years career with E-Force (performing in 20 countries, 250+ shows, and several festival appearances) do you still feel the shadow of the Voivod on you? Does it bother you that they are often mentioned when it comes to your band?
Not at all, really, I just kind of continue what i was doing with Voivod it’s kind of in my blood after being in the band for 7 years. I lived and learned a lot, so for the last 20 years I’ve just been guiding the ship how and where we can voyage. Being the ex Voivod guy has helped my career immensely.
Do you still live in France? Do you think that in some way being in Europe influences your music?
Yes I do, hard to say its been an incredible experience, although I believe I would be composing the same music no matter where I live.
