I Brutality sono giunti al canto del cigno? Forse sì, forse no… Nemmeno Scott Reigel ci ha chiarito quale sia la vera natura di “Sempiternity” (Emanzipation Productions), il nuovo album che raccoglie brani inediti, nuove versioni di vecchie canzoni e tracce live.

Ciao Scott, che posto occupa il nuovo album “Sempiternity” nella vostra discografia? Dovremmo considerarlo una compilation, un album dal vivo o il vostro canto del cigno?
Per me è il nostro quinto album. Non la considero una compilation, un album dal vivo e per ora non siamo sicuri se questo sarà l’ultimo nostro disco che i nostri fan ascolteranno!

Che ruolo ha giocato Michael H. Andersen, l’A&R dell’Emanzipation Productions, nella realizzazione di questo disco?
Lavoriamo con Michael da diversi anni. Ha sempre voluto fare un album con noi. Dopo che ci siamo sciolti nel 2020, è venuto da noi e ci ha chiesto se c’era del materiale che potevamo pubblicare come possibile “Swan Song”. Così nato “Sempiternity”!

Le due nuove canzoni dell’album sono “Orchestrated Devastation” e “Fluent In Silence”, come sono nate queste tracce?
Abbiamo lavorato su queste tracce per anni per inserirle in un full-length. Queste due tracce erano le più complete e quelle che sentivamo che si adattavano al meglio a ciò che siamo oggi.

Quanto è difficile rimettere insieme una band dopo una lunga pausa, anche solo per registrare due nuove tracce?
Siamo tutti amici da oltre 30 anni, quindi non è stato difficile stare insieme e preparare queste canzoni in studio. Quando stiamo tutti insieme, la musica scorre semplicemente fuori di noi in modo spontaneo.

“Crushed” e “Artistic Butchery” sono state ri-registrati, fino ad ora erano disponibili solo su un EP limitato autoprodotto dalla band uscito nel 2018. Quali sono le differenze tra queste nuove versioni e le originali?
Le canzoni sono sostanzialmente le stesse tranne per il fatto che Ronnie Pamer ha suonato la batteria e Jay Fernandez si è occupato delle chitarre in entrambe le canzoni. Li abbiamo registrati per divertimento un fine settimana negli studios di Jarrett Pritchards su un registratore analogico da 2 pollici che aveva acquistato. Poi abbiamo deciso di pubblicarle in vinile per i nostri fan.

Le ultime quattro tracce (“These Walls Shall Be Your Grave”, “Cries Of The Forsaken”, “Cryptorium” e “48 To 52”) sono state registrate dal vivo al Maryland Deathfest nel maggio 2019. Perché avete scelto queste quattro canzoni?
Il nostro set quella sera aveva una durata limitata, quindi abbiamo usato le tracce che ritenevamo suonassero al meglio. Ci sono ancora alcune registrazioni di quella notte, ma avevamo già deciso di usare delle versioni ri-registrate per questo album. Forse in futuro le pubblicheremo per farle ascoltare ai fan.

Che ricordi hai del concerto in cui sono stati registrati?
È stato un grande spettacolo con molti fan e feedback positivi. Probabilmente una delle nostre migliori esibizioni dal vivo nella nostra carriera di oltre 30 anni! Presentavamo una formazione particolarmente sul palco quella notte. Penso che i fan lo avvertiranno nell’album quando lo ascolteranno!

Senza i Brutality, pensi di unirti a un altro progetto o di fondare una nuova band?
In realtà sto lavorando a un progetto parallelo che per ora si chiama Primal Drift e ho intenzione di pubblicare un album completo nel 2023. Aggiornerò i fan man mano che le cose andranno avanti!

Grazie per l’intervista, vuoi salutare i fan di Brutality con un addio o un arrivederci?
Vorremmo ringraziare tutti i nostri fan in tutto il mondo che sono rimasti con noi durante i nostri alti e bassi. Abbiamo i fan più devoti del metal! Stay Brtual!

Have Brutality come to swan song? Maybe yes, maybe not … Not even Scott Reigel has clarified the true nature of “Sempiternity” (Emanzipation Productions), the new album that collects unreleased titles, new versions of past songs and live tracks.

Hi Scott, what place does the new album “Sempiternity” occupy in your discography? Should we consider it a compilation, a live album or a swansong?
Well for me it is our 5^th album. I don’t consider it a compilation, live album and for now we are not sure if this is the last our fans will hear from us!

What role did Michael H. Andersen, Emanzipation Productions A&R, play in the making of this record?
We have been working with Michael for several years. He always wanted to do a album with us. After we disbanded in 2020 he came to us and asked if there was any material we had we could we release as a possible Swan Song. “Sempiternity” was born!!!

The two new songs on the album are “Orchestrated Devastation” and “Fluent In Silence”, how are born these tracks?
We had been working on these tracks for years for a full length album. These 2 tracks were the most complete and the ones that we felt and best fit who we are today.

How hard is it to put a band back together after a long hiatus, even if just to record two new tracks?
We all have been friends for over 30 years so it wasn’t hard to get together and get these songs ready for the studio. When we are all together the music simply flows out of us organically.

“Crushed” and “Artistic Butchery” were re-recorded in 2018, and only available until now in a limited 7” EP self-released by the band. What are the differences between these new versions and the originals?
The songs are basically the same except Ronnie Pamer is on drums and Jay Fernandez is on guitar playing all the parts on both songs. We recorded them for fun one weekend at Jarrett Pritchards studio on a 2in analog tape machine he had purchased. Then we decided to release it on vinyl for our fans.

The last four tracks (“These Walls Shall Be Your Grave”, “Cries Of The Forsaken”, “Cryptorium” and “48 To 52”) were recorded live at the Maryland Deathfest in May 2019. Why did you choose these four tracks?
Our set that night was only a certain of time length so we used the tracks we felt sounded the best that night. There are a few more tracks from that night but we were already using them from the re-recorded songs we were putting on this album. Perhaps in the future we will release them for fans to hear.

What memories do you have of the concert in which they were recorded?
It was a great show with lots of fans and positive feed back. Probably one of our best live performances in our 30 career! This line up was ferocious on stage that night. I think fans will hear that on the album when they listen to it!

Without Brutality, do you think you merge another project or join a new band?
I’m actually working on a side project now called Primal Drift and plan on releasing a full length album 2023. I will be updating fans as it progresses!
