Ci sono canzoni che appartengono a un’epoca e altre che, quando tornano a risuonare dagli amplificatori, dimostrano di avere ancora qualcosa da dire. È proprio da questa voglia di rimettere mano alla propria storia senza trattarla come un pezzo da museo che nasce “Duets II”: Feline Melinda riprendono cinque brani del proprio repertorio e li affidano ancora una volta alla complicità vocale con Doris Albenberger, trasformandoli in qualcosa di nuovo senza spezzare il filo con le versioni originali. Ne abbiamo parlato con Rob e Chris, tra vecchi riff, nuovi arrangiamenti, collaborazioni, ricordi e una domanda che per una band di questo tipo conta più di qualsiasi celebrazione: quanta strada c’è ancora davanti? “Duets II” uscirà il 2 ottobre per Diotima Records.
Ciao ragazzi, grazie ancora per la vostra disponibilità e bentornati sulle pagine de Il Raglio Del Mulo. Nel 2026 i Feline Melinda festeggiano 40 anni di attività e lo fanno con “Duets II”, ideale seguito dell’EP del 2019: cosa rappresenta per voi questo nuovo capitolo e perché avete scelto proprio questo momento per riprendere quel progetto?
Rob: Ciao Giuseppe, è un vero piacere risentirci, soprattutto in occasione del quarantesimo anniversario dei Feline Melinda e per presentare “Duets II”. Questo nuovo lavoro rappresenta un ulteriore passo avanti nella collaborazione con Doris Albenberger. Fin dalla pubblicazione del primo “Duets” nel 2019, questo sodalizio è proseguito senza sosta, alimentato da un grande entusiasmo e dal desiderio di offrire al nostro pubblico i brani del nostro repertorio reinterpretati in una suggestiva veste a due voci.
Nel 2019 “Duets” era nato attorno alla collaborazione con Doris Albenberger e aveva trasformato alcuni vostri brani in vere e proprie reinterpretazioni. In “Duets II” avete scelto cinque canzoni provenienti da epoche diverse della vostra storia: quali caratteristiche cercavate nei brani da riportare in questa nuova dimensione e cosa avete scoperto di nuovo riascoltandoli oggi?
Chris: Sì, si tratta di vere e proprie reinterpretazioni, proprio perché Doris infonde tantissimo della sua personalità nei brani. Quando si trova davanti al microfono in studio ha la massima libertà espressiva, il che le permette di esprimere al cento per cento il suo stile e la sua sensibilità. In questo modo, arricchisce i pezzi con una leggerezza e sfumature inedite che li rendono unici rispetto alle versioni originali. Spesso è la stessa Doris che, durante le sessioni di registrazione, propone variazioni e soluzioni melodiche del tutto nuove.
Nella nostra precedente intervista mi avevate raccontato che “Seventh Heaven” era stata una composizione particolarmente lunga e che il lavoro di Sascha Paeth aveva portato anche a modifiche importanti rispetto al vostro demo originale. Per “Duets II”, invece, quanto ha inciso l’esperienza maturata con “Seven VII” sul modo in cui avete affrontato questi nuovi arrangiamenti e le registrazioni con Doris?
Rob: Innanzitutto, fin dall’inizio della produzione dell’album in studio “Seven VII”, abbiamo capito di essere un’ottima squadra. Tra la band, Doris, Marco e Sascha si è creata subito una splendida intesa e un forte spirito di collaborazione. Ognuno svolge il proprio ruolo con grande professionalità e passione, un’armonia che traspare chiaramente ascoltando le canzoni. Se per la produzione del primo “Duets” ci eravamo affidati interamente a Marco, che conosce i Feline Melinda, i membri e il nostro sound fin dal 2008, anno in cui collaborò all’album “Morning Dew”, con l’EP “Duets II” abbiamo allargato la squadra. Ci siamo affidati a Sascha Paeth, che non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni, e a Francesco Pinter, un chitarrista eccellente e poliedrico. Francesco, oltre a coprire il ruolo di chitarrista live quando Headmatt è impegnato, mette a disposizione la propria personalità e il proprio tocco, permettendo alla band di contare su due eccezionali chitarristi al servizio del nostro sound.
La collaborazione con Doris è iniziata nel 2016, durante il concerto per il vostro trentesimo anniversario, e da quella serata sono nati prima l’EP “Duets”, poi “Christmas Time” e altre collaborazioni. Dopo dieci anni di lavoro insieme, cosa pensate che la sua voce riesca a tirare fuori dai Feline Melinda che magari non emerge nello stesso modo nelle vostre versioni originali?
Chris: Al di là del legame musicale, con Doris ci uniscono una profonda stima reciproca e una grande amicizia. Dal punto di vista artistico, la voce di Rob si amalgama alla perfezione con la sua. Doris non ha la tipica impostazione vocale del metal femminile; la sua timbrica morbida, ma sempre incisiva e presente, dona ai brani una sfumatura quasi pop. Come anticipato da Rob, i brani acquisiscono una marcia in più che li rinnova profondamente, senza però intaccare lo spirito e il messaggio originari.
“Duets II” attraversa brani come “Morning Dew”, “Seven Sins Seven Lies” e “Before The Dawn”, accostando momenti diversi della vostra carriera. C’è una canzone dell’EP che, riascoltata oggi, vi ha sorpreso più delle altre per come è cambiata attraverso la nuova veste?
Rob: Sì, senza ombra di dubbio la traccia che ci ha colpito di più è la nuova versione in duetto di “Morning Dew”. In studio abbiamo voluto ripensarla andando dritti al sodo: la prima strofa attacca subito dopo appena due giri di chitarra, accorciando l’intro e tagliando la parte orchestrale centrale per arrivare direttamente all’intensità del chorus finale, impreziosito dall’assolo di Headmatt. In questo pezzo ho voluto dare ampio spazio alla voce solista di Doris, inserendo la mia solo nel ritornello. Con questo arrangiamento siamo riusciti a catturare l’essenza di “Morning Dew” (che risale al 2008) senza snaturarne l’anima. Essendo uno dei brani più amati del nostro repertorio e un vero cavallo di battaglia nei live, è sempre un pezzo divertente da suonare e capace di catturare all’istante l’attenzione del pubblico.
Chris: A questo proposito, non posso non citare “More Than Ever”. Il testo fu scritto originariamente da Rob per celebrare la nascita di mia figlia e racconta la prospettiva di un padre premuroso che accompagna la propria bambina verso l’adolescenza, proteggendola ma lasciandola libera di cercare la propria strada e i propri sogni, con la promessa di esserci sempre. Queste parole, tuttavia, si prestano perfettamente anche a descrivere la storia d’amore tra due persone, rendendo il brano ideale per un duetto. Grazie al suo ritmo potente e a un ritornello melodico e trascinante, abbiamo scelto proprio questa canzone per aprire l’EP “Duets II”.
Nella nostra precedente intervista avevate parlato anche della vostra scelta di rimanere liberi da formule discografiche che non vi convincono e di continuare a seguire la vostra strada senza inseguire le mode. Dopo quarant’anni, il nuovo logo, la nuova veste grafica e “Duets II” sembrano però mostrare una band ancora interessata a rinnovarsi: quanto è importante cambiare pelle senza perdere la propria identità?
Chris: È assolutamente vero. Custodire la propria identità musicale è fondamentale, ma questo non significa rimanere immobili o vivere di soli ricordi: sarebbe un errore imperdonabile. Quando non si ha più nulla da dire, da comunicare o non c’è più evoluzione, allora forse è il momento di fermarsi. L’idea di “regalarci” un nuovo logo per i quarant’anni di attività ci ha entusiasmato fin da subito, così come l’input del management di lanciare l’EP con una veste grafica completamente diversa rispetto alle nostre pubblicazioni passate. Sia la copertina di “Duets II” sia il nuovo logo sono firmati da Rhett Podersoo, che ha svolto un lavoro straordinario che ci ha conquistato al primo colpo, senza bisogno di cercare alternative.
Avete iniziato nel 1986 e avete attraversato epoche musicali, cambiamenti tecnologici e trasformazioni profonde del mercato. Se ripensate ai Feline Melinda degli esordi, qual è l’aspetto della band di allora che riconoscete ancora perfettamente in voi oggi, e quale invece vi avrebbe sorpreso maggiormente vedere arrivato fino al 2026?
Rob: Essendo l’unico membro della band attivo fin dagli esordi, quando nel 1986 fondai i Feline Melinda insieme a Andy De Santis, mi capita spesso di guardarmi indietro e ripercorrere questi quattro decenni. La caratteristica di allora che conserviamo intatta ancora oggi è, senza dubbio, la tenacia. Nel brano omonimo del nostro album di debutto del 1988, “The Felines Await You”, nel bridge cantavamo: “…never, never, never – never gonna stop!”. L’aspetto che invece mi sorprende maggiormente è l’incredibile evoluzione musicale: siamo nati come un trio speed metal melodico con venature hard rock e ci siamo trasformati in una band difficilmente etichettabile. Oggi, nel 2026, la nostra proposta spazia dal metal rock melodico al power metal, strizzando l’occhio al pop-metal, all’AOR e alle metal ballad. Inoltre, abbiamo allargato la line-up; Chris e io siamo davvero fieri della “Feline Melinda family” che si è creata in questi anni e che ci permette di affrontare nuovi stimoli e sfide senza mai smarrire la nostra identità.
Dopo questo anniversario e questo ritorno al passato, avete già iniziato a capire quale potrebbe essere la direzione della prossima produzione dei Feline Melinda?
Chris: Diciamo che Rob è la vera forza motrice della band, un vulcano continuo di idee. Essendo il compositore principale del nostro repertorio, ha già nel cassetto diverse composizioni che dovremo iniziare a provare, arrangiare e registrare sotto forma di demo, con l’obiettivo di trasformarle in un prossimo album in studio. In parallelo, stiamo valutando la pubblicazione di una retrospettiva, un “Best Of” che racchiuda i quarant’anni di storia dei Feline Melinda, raccogliendo quelle canzoni rimaste nel cuore dei fan, come ad esempio “Skydiver”.
Chiudiamo guardando avanti: tra l’uscita di “Duets II”, l’edizione CD digipack, eventuali concerti e il nuovo materiale a cui state lavorando, quali sono gli obiettivi che vi siete dati per il prossimo capitolo della storia dei Feline Melinda e cosa possiamo aspettarci da voi nei prossimi mesi?
Rob/Chris: Al momento la nostra priorità assoluta e tutte le nostre energie sono focalizzate sulla promozione di “Duets II”. Per il futuro, l’obiettivo più grande rimane quello di portare avanti i Feline Melinda con la stessa dedizione, passione e spirito di sacrificio di sempre, mantenendo intatta la voglia di divertirci! Some songs belong to a certain era, while others, when they come roaring back through the amplifiers, prove they still have something to say. That is exactly where “Duets II” comes in: Feline Melinda revisit five tracks from their own catalogue, once again teaming up with Doris Albenberger, turning them into something fresh without breaking the connection with the original versions. We talked to Rob and Chris about old riffs, new arrangements, collaborations, memories and a question that matters more than any anniversary celebration for a band like this: how much road is still left ahead? “Duets II” will be released on October 2 via Diotima Records.
Hi guys, thanks again for your time and welcome back to the pages of Il Raglio Del Mulo. In 2026, Feline Melinda celebrate 40 years of activity with “Duets II”, the ideal follow-up to the 2019 EP: what does this new chapter mean to you, and why did you choose this particular moment to bring that project back?
Rob: Hi Giuseppe, it’s a real pleasure to hear from you again, especially on the occasion of Feline Melinda’s 40th anniversary and to present “Duets II”. This new release represents another step forward in our collaboration with Doris Albenberger. Ever since the first “Duets” was released in 2019, this partnership has continued non-stop, fuelled by great enthusiasm and the desire to offer our audience songs from our catalogue reinterpreted in an intriguing two-vocal format.
Back in 2019, “Duets” was born around your collaboration with Doris Albenberger and turned some of your songs into full-blown reinterpretations. On “Duets II”, you chose five songs from different eras of your history: what were you looking for in the songs you wanted to bring into this new dimension, and what did you discover about them when you listened to them again today?
Chris: Yes, they really are full-blown reinterpretations, precisely because Doris puts so much of her own personality into the songs. When she steps up to the microphone in the studio, she has complete freedom of expression, which allows her to bring one hundred percent of her style and sensitivity to the performance. In this way, she enriches the tracks with a certain lightness and previously unheard shades that make them unique compared to the original versions. Very often, it’s Doris herself who suggests completely new variations and melodic solutions during the recording sessions.
In our previous interview, you told me that “Seventh Heaven” had been a particularly long composition and that Sascha Paeth’s work had also led to some major changes compared to your original demo. With “Duets II”, though, how much did the experience you gained with “Seven VII” influence the way you approached these new arrangements and the recordings with Doris?
Rob: First of all, right from the beginning of the production of the “Seven VII” studio album, we realised that we were a great team. A fantastic understanding and a strong spirit of collaboration immediately developed between the band, Doris, Marco and Sascha. Everyone plays their part with great professionalism and passion, and that harmony clearly comes through when you listen to the songs. While we had relied entirely on Marco for the production of the first “Duets” – he has known Feline Melinda, the members and our sound since 2008, when he worked on the “Morning Dew” album – with the “Duets II” EP we expanded the team. We brought in Sascha Paeth, who certainly needs no introduction, and Francesco Pinter, an excellent and highly versatile guitarist. Besides stepping in as our live guitarist whenever Headmatt is busy, Francesco brings his own personality and touch to the table, allowing the band to rely on two exceptional guitarists working in the service of our sound.
Your collaboration with Doris began in 2016, during the concert celebrating your 30th anniversary, and that night eventually led first to the “Duets” EP, then to “Christmas Time” and other collaborations. After ten years of working together, what do you think her voice brings out of Feline Melinda that perhaps doesn’t emerge in quite the same way in your original versions?
Chris: Beyond the musical connection, Doris and we share deep mutual respect and a great friendship. Artistically speaking, Rob’s voice blends perfectly with hers. Doris doesn’t have the typical vocal approach you often hear in female-fronted metal; her tone is soft, yet always powerful and present, giving the songs an almost pop feel. As Rob mentioned, the songs gain an extra gear that gives them a profound new lease of life, without affecting their original spirit or message.
“Duets II” moves through songs such as “Morning Dew”, “Seven Sins Seven Lies” and “Before The Dawn”, bringing together different moments from your career. Is there one song on the EP that surprised you more than the others when you heard how much it had changed in this new form?
Rob: Yes, without a shadow of a doubt, the track that impressed us the most is the new duet version of “Morning Dew”. In the studio, we wanted to rethink it by cutting straight to the chase: the first verse kicks in after just two guitar runs, shortening the intro and cutting the central orchestral section so that we could get straight to the intensity of the final chorus, enhanced by Headmatt’s solo. On this track, I wanted to give Doris’ lead vocal plenty of room, bringing my own voice in only for the chorus. With this arrangement, we managed to capture the essence of “Morning Dew” (which dates back to 2008) without stripping away its soul. Since it’s one of the most loved songs in our catalogue and a true live staple, it’s always a fun track to play and one that can grab the audience’s attention instantly.
Chris: On that note, I have to mention “More Than Ever”. The lyrics were originally written by Rob to celebrate the birth of my daughter and tell the story from the perspective of a caring father guiding his little girl into adolescence, protecting her while allowing her the freedom to find her own path and dreams, with the promise that he’ll always be there. However, these words also lend themselves perfectly to describing the love story between two people, making the song ideal for a duet. Thanks to its powerful rhythm and a catchy, driving melodic chorus, we chose this song to open the “Duets II” EP.
In our previous interview, you also talked about your decision to remain free from record-business formulas you don’t believe in and to keep following your own path instead of chasing trends. After forty years, though, the new logo, the new visual identity and “Duets II” seem to show a band that is still interested in reinventing itself: how important is it to change your skin without losing your identity?
Chris: That’s absolutely true. Protecting your musical identity is essential, but that doesn’t mean standing still or living off memories alone: that would be an unforgivable mistake. When you have nothing left to say, nothing left to communicate, or there is no longer any evolution, then maybe it’s time to stop. The idea of “giving ourselves” a new logo for our 40th anniversary excited us right from the start, as did the management’s input to launch the EP with a visual identity completely different from our previous releases. Both the “Duets II” cover and the new logo were created by Rhett Podersoo, who did an extraordinary job that won us over straight away, without the need to look for alternatives.
You started out in 1986 and have lived through different musical eras, technological changes and deep transformations in the music business. When you look back at Feline Melinda in the early days, what aspect of the band back then do you still recognise perfectly in yourselves today, and what would have surprised you most about seeing it make it all the way to 2026?
Rob: As the only member of the band who has been active since the very beginning, when I founded Feline Melinda with Andy De Santis in 1986, I often find myself looking back and going through these four decades. The characteristic we have kept completely intact to this day is, without a doubt, our tenacity. In the title track of our 1988 debut album, “The Felines Await You”, we sang in the bridge: “…never, never, never – never gonna stop!”. What surprises me most, though, is the incredible musical evolution: we started out as a melodic speed metal trio with hard rock influences and have evolved into a band that is difficult to label. Today, in 2026, our music ranges from melodic metal rock to power metal, while also flirting with pop metal, AOR and metal ballads. We’ve also expanded the line-up; Chris and I are really proud of the “Feline Melinda family” that has grown over the years and allows us to take on new challenges and new inspiration without ever losing our identity.
After this anniversary and this journey back into the past, have you already started to get a sense of what direction Feline Melinda’s next release might take?
Chris: Let’s say that Rob is the real driving force behind the band, a constant volcano of ideas. As the main songwriter behind our catalogue, he already has several compositions sitting in the drawer that we’ll have to start rehearsing, arranging and recording as demos, with the goal of turning them into our next studio album. At the same time, we’re considering putting together a retrospective, a “Best Of” covering forty years of Feline Melinda history and bringing together those songs that have remained in our fans’ hearts, such as “Skydiver”.
Let’s close by looking ahead: with the release of “Duets II”, the CD digipack edition, possible concerts and the new material you’re working on, what goals have you set for the next chapter in Feline Melinda’s story, and what can we expect from you over the coming months?
Rob/Chris: Right now, our absolute priority and all our energy are focused on promoting “Duets II”. Looking further ahead, our biggest goal remains to keep Feline Melinda moving forward with the same dedication, passion and spirit of sacrifice we’ve always had, while keeping our desire to have fun completely intact!
