Dopo la celebrazione del loro trentesimo anniversario nel 2020, i The Crown hanno dato prova del loro strapotere in ambito death metal con il nuovo album “Royal Destroyer” (Metal Blade).

Ehi Magnus, grazie per averci dedicato del tempo. Come stai oggi?
Ciao, proprio bene grazie!

Il tuo nuovo album “Royal Destroyer”, sarà pubblicato dalla Metal Blade Records il 12 marzo 2021. Dopo 30 anni di carriera, è stato relativamente facile trovare di nuovo l’ispirazione o è stato un album difficile da realizzare?
Sì, dato che è il nostro album numero dieci, si trattava di un traguardo piuttosto importante, ma penso che trovare l’ispirazione sia stato relativamente facile, tutto è riuscito in modo molto naturale e penso che tu possa avvertirlo. È un lavoro molto onesto.

Inizialmente programmato per essere registrato a maggio, la pandemia di Covid-19 ha fatto tardare i vostri piani di cinque mesi: quanto è stato difficile per voi rimanere concentrati sull’obiettivo?
In realtà è stato molto bello quello che è successo, ci ha dato un po’ di tempo in più per le prove e per preparare al meglio le canzoni per la registrazione. Tutto accade per una ragione.

Puoi dirmi qualcosa sulle nuove canzoni? Potresti descriverli ?
La traccia di apertura “Baptized In Violence” è la più breve che abbiamo mai fatto, un minuto di follia! “Let the Hammering Begin!” è una traccia lunga e veloce, strutturata come “Angel of Death”, in un certo senso un tributo a Jeff Hanneman. “Motordeath” è una canzone molto thrash ricca di energia con alcune melodie orecchiabili. “Ultra Faust” è un pezzo epico e brutale, un po’ come “Fall From Grace” dei Morbid Angel. “Glorious Hades” è una melodia hevy epica con alcune delle migliori voci che Johan abbia mai fatto. “Full Metal Justice” è un brano originale realizzato da Robin, tecnico, accattivante ed energico. “Scandinavian Satan” è un rock and roll barbaro nello stile del black metal di prima generazione. “Devoid of Light” è un’altra delle canzoni di Robin, oscura e brutale, con alcune vibrazioni Morbid Angel. “We Drift On” è la ballata dell’album, un po’ come “To Live Is To Die” dei Metallica. “Beyond the Frail” è molto veloce e melodica con alcuni spunti death / black metal in stile anni ’90.

Il nome della band, The Crown, è anche il titolo di una serie TV sulla famiglia reale britannica. Il titolo del nuovo album è “Royal Destroyer”, c’è un legame ironico tra le due cose?
No. Non di proposito, ma ci ho pensato dopo anche io. Le cose a modo loro hanno certa connessione…

Che mi dci di “Scandinavian Satan”, è una canzone sulla scena black metal norvegese degli anni ’90?
No, non proprio, i testi provengono dalla Völuspa, una vecchia mitica profezia norrena sulla fine del mondo. Ma approvo a tutte le interpretazioni che le persone possono dare alle canzoni, dovrebbero avere dei significati diversi a livelli diversi. Più collegamenti ci sono, meglio è. E si può certamente dire che la scena black metal norvegese negli anni ’90 era una sorta di satana scandinavo di qualche tipo.

In tutti questi anni non avete avuto uno stile omogeneo per l’artwork delle copertine, tipo band come Iron Maiden o Motorhead: perché vi piace cambiare stile spesso?
La risposta breve è che così non è noioso. Mi annoio e mi stanco delle cose abbastanza facilmente. Penso che abbiamo avuto delle copertine di album davvero fantastiche nel corso degli anni, questa nuova è sicuramente una delle più epiche.

Hai ascoltato i Sarcator, la band del figlio di Marko, Mateo Tervonen? Ti piacerebbe fare un tour con loro?
Sì, li ho sentiti, condividiamo la sala prove, sono fantastici. Non mi dispiacerebbe andare in tour con loro.

Dopo 30 anni, ti vedi come un modello per molti giovani?
Niente affatto, non credo affatto che siamo dei modelli per i giovani. Ma forse possiamo ispirare vecchi e giovani a non arrendersi e mantenere la fiamma accesa!

After the celebration of their thirtieth anniversary in 2020, The Crown had proven of their enduring forces in death metal with the new album “Royal Destroyer” (Metal Blade).

Hey Magnus, thanks for taking the time to talk with us. How are you doing today?
Hullo, just fine thank you!

Your new album “Royal Destroyer”, will be released by Metal Blade Records on 12 March 2021. After 30 years of carrier, was it relatively easy to find that inspiration again or was this a difficult album to make?
Yeah, as it is our album no. 10 it is a pretty big accomplishment. I think finding inspiration was relatively easy, it all came together very natural for this album, and I think you can hear that also. It is a very honest sound.

Initially scheduled to be recorded in May, the Covid-19 pandemic pushed back your plans by five months: how hard it was for you to stay focused on the goal?
It was actually very good what happened, it gave us some extra time in the rehearsal to really prepare the songs ready for the recording. Everything happens for a reason.

Can you tell me something about new songs? Could you describe them now?
The opening track “Baptized In Violence” is the shortest track we have done ever, 1 minute madness! “Let the Hammering Begin!” is a fast long track, structured like “Angel of Death”, in a way a tribute to Jeff Hanneman. “Motordeath” is a high energy thrashier song with some catchy melodies. “Ultra Faust” is a brutal epic piece, a bit like “Fall from Grace” by Morbid Angel. “Glorious Hades” is a Heavy epic tune with some of the best vocals that Johan has ever done. “Full Metal Justice” is a original kind of track made by Robin, technical, catchy and energetic. “Scandinavian Satan” is barbaric Rock n Roll in the style of first generation Black Metal. “Devoid of Light” is another of Robin songs, dark and brutal, with some Morbid Angel vibes. “We Drift On” is the ballad of the album, a bit like “To Live Is To Die” by Metallica. “Beyond the Frail” is very fast and melodic with some 90ies style Death/Black Metal.

The band’s name, The Crown is also the title of a TV series about the British royal family. The title of the new album is “Royal Destroyer”, is there an ironic connection between the two?
No. Not by purpose but I thought about it afterwards. Things just come together in their own way…

What’s about “Scandinavian Satan”, is a song about the ’90s Norwegian black metal scene?
No not really, the lyrics are from the Völuspa an old Norse mythic prophecy about the End of the World. But I applaud any and all associations that people can have about the songs, it’s all supposed to have different meanings on different levels. The more links the better. And you can certainly say that the Norwegian Black Metal Scene in the 90ies was a Scandinavian Satan of some sorts.

In all these years you have not had a single style in the cover artwork, as bands like Iron Maiden or Motorhead: why do you like to change style often?
The short answer is that it is not boring. I get bored and tired of stuff pretty easy. I think we have had some really cool album covers over the years, this new one is certainly one of the most epic.

Did you listen to Sarcator, the band of Marko’s son Mateo Tervonen? Would you like to take a tour with them?
Yeah I have heard them, we share rehearsal room, they are cool. I wouldn’t mind touring with them.

After 30 years, how do you see yourself as a role model to many young people?
Not at all really, I don’t think we are role models at all for young people. But maybe we can inspire some old and Young people not to give up and keep the flame burning!
