Poche band possono affermare di aver contribuito a forgiare il suono death / thrash metal made in Florida come hanno fatto i Solstice. All’inizio degli anni ’90, album fondamentali come “Solstice” e “Pray” hanno rappresentato la pietra miliare su cui è stata costruita la scena locale. Ora, alimentati dal nuovo sangue portato da Ryan Taylor e Marcel Salas, i Solstice sono tornati a pieno regime, dando un’impressionante dimostrazione di potenza con il proprio quarto album, “Casting The Die” (Emanzipation Productions).
Benvenuto Dennis, perché dopo 12 anni hai deciso che era arrivato il momento di rimetterti in gioco?
Il tempo e le circostanze erano quelle giuste. Abbiamo trovato un giovane chitarrista / cantante fenomenale che si adattava perfettamente al nostro stile e che ha portato nuova linfa vitale alla band.
Cosa è andato storto dopo l’uscita di “To Dust”?
Non sono sicuro che qualcosa sia andato storto, ma l’album è stato un autoprodotto e, a causa della nostra situazione logistica, non abbiamo potuto esibirci dal vivo per promuoverlo. Siamo molto orgogliosi del lavoro che abbiamo fatto per “To Dust” e del risultato finale.
In passato Rob ha lasciato per unirsi ai Cannibal Corpse e Alex era sempre più impegnato con i Malevolent Creation e Demolition Hammer, per questo la band si è presa una lunga pausa. I Sosltice di oggi sono una priorità per tutti i membri della band?
Tutti i nostri membri sono attualmente attivi anche in altri progetti, ma siamo comunque tutti pronti a promuovere dal vivo questo nuovo album.
Potresti presentare i tuoi nuovi membri Marcel Salas e Ryan Taylor?
Marcel Salas, basso e Ryan Taylor, chitarra / voce. Due musicisti fenomenali che hanno spinto questa band nel 21° secolo!
Come nasce “Casting the Die”: le canzoni sono scritte esclusivamente per questo album?
Sì, sono stati scritti esclusivamente per questo album. Abbiamo composto tutto insieme come una band ed è stato un processo molto fluido che non ha richiesto molto tempo per essere completato.
Il vostro sound e il vostro atteggiamento sono cambiati in questi anni?
Non credo che il suono sia cambiato, è aggressivo come non lo è mai stato. Più che scrivere musica per noi stessi, come era quando abbiamo iniziato, amiamo anche la connessione che la musica crea con i fan. È una sensazione fantastica sentire che qualcosa che abbiamo scritto ha avuto un impatto su qualcuno in qualche modo.
Che mi dici del titolo dell’album, “Casting the Die”?
Come affermato da Ryan Tayor, nella vita capita di dover prendere per caso una decisione importante e di doverla rispettare, perché non c’è possibilità di tornare indietro.
Il back-catalogue dei Solstice, gli album “The Sentencing” e “Pray”, così come il demo del 1991, saranno ristampati dalla Emanzipation sia in formato CD che in vinile. Hai qualche rimpianto per il tuo passato?
L’unico rammarico che mi viene in mente è stata la produzione originale di “Pray”. Penso che la nostra storia sarebbe potuta andare diversamente se quell’album fosse stato registrato meglio.
Ti consideri uno dei padri della scena death metal?
Direi con una certa riluttanza di sì, e lo faccio solo perché ho visto molte band elencarci come un’influenza, e questo è molto lusinghiero e gratificante.
Siete pronti a tornare sul palco dopo la fine del blocco dei concerti?
Sì, stiamo programmando di tornare in Europa e altrove il prima possibile.
Few bands can claim to have forged the Florida death/thrash metal sound as Solstice did. Back in the early 90’s, pivotal albums such as “Solstice” and “Pray” set the milestone for the local scene and for the whole style to look up to. Now, powered with the new blood brought by Ryan Taylor and Marcel Salas, Solstice is back in full force, with an impressive display of power in the form of the fourth album, “Casting The Die” (Emanzipation Productions).
Welcome, why after 12 years did you decide it was time to get back in the game?
The time and circumstances were right. We found a young phenom guitar player/vocalist that was a perfect fit and brought new life to the band.
What went wrong after the release of “To Dust”?
I’m not sure anything went wrong but the album was a self release and due to our logistical living situation we couldn’t perform live in support. We’re very proud of the work we put into To Dust and the outcome.
In the past Rob left to join Cannibal Corpse and with Alex increasingly busy with Malevolent Creation and Demolition Hammer, the band went into a long hiatus. Is today Solstice a priority for all the band members?
All our members are currently in other projects as well, but we are all ready to put into motion performing live for this new album.
Could you to introduce your new members Marcel Salas and Ryan Taylor?
Marcel Salas, bass guitar and Ryan Taylor, guitar/vocals. Two phenom musicians who have propelled this band into the 21st century!
How is born “Casting the Die”: are the songs written exclusively for this album?
Yes they were written exclusively for this album. We wrote together as a band and it was a very fluid process which didn’t take long to complete.
Are your sound and your attitude changed in these years?
I don’t believe the sound has changed, it’s as aggressive as it ever was. More than just writing music for ourselves which was how it was when we started, we also love the connection the music creates with fans. It’s an awesome feeling to hear that something we wrote has had an impact on someone in some way.
What’s about the album title “Casting the Die”?
As stated by Ryan Tayor, it’s about making a major decision in life by chance and having to stick by it because there is no return.
Solstice back-catalogue, the albums “The Sentencing” and “Pray”, as well as their 1991 demo, will also be reissued by Emanzipation on both CD and vinyl formats. Have you some regrets about your past?
Only regret that comes to mind was the original production of “Pray”. I think it could have been a different story if that album was properly recorded.
Do you look at yourself as a prime mover in the death metal scene?
I would reluctantly say yes and that’s only because I’ve seen many bands list us as an influence and that’s very complimentary and humbling.
Are you ready to back on stage after the concerts stop?
Yes we are planning to return to Europe and elsewhere as soon as it is possible.
