Vincent Crowley – Beyond Acheron

Dopo trent’anni con gli Acheron, Vincent Crowley si è reso conto che la sua band è giunta alla fine. È iniziata una nuova era di incubo e orrore: “Beyond Acheron”, il primo album della Vincent Crowley Band, uscirà a giugno su Odium Records: preparatevi a salire a bordo… l’oscuro traghettatore vi sta aspettando.

Benvenuto Vincent, circa 30 anni il primo album degli Acheron, “Rites of the Black Mass”, fu pubblicato dalla Turbo Music. Sei eccitato per questo nuovo inizio sotto il nome di Vincent Crowley Band?
Si, certamente! Dopo tre decenni di Acheron, tutto è tornato al punto di partenza ed era arrivato il momento di iniziare un nuovo viaggio oscuro su un inesplorato sentiero sinistro.

Quando hai capito che il tempo degli Acheront era finito?
Dopo l’ultimo album registrato dagli Acheron, “Kult Des Hasses”, abbiamo avuto molti problemi all’interno della band. Ho messo insieme una nuova formazione e ho deciso che non avremmo più registrato album e ci saremmo limitati ai concerti. E abbiamo suonato in molti posti fantastici. Abbiamo lavorato su del nuovo materiale e abbiamo anche provato a fare un demo di alcune cose, ma non ha funzionato. Nel 2018, abbiamo suonato il nostro ultimo spettacolo e l’abbiamo interrotto. Sentivo di aver detto tutto quello che volevo c’era da dire con quella band per quanto riguarda l’ideologia satanista e i temi antireligiosi. Non c’era bisogno di continuare e continuare a ripetere le idee del passato. Volevo ancora fare qualcosa di oscuro, ma con una nuova vena e diversi argomenti lirici.

Questa non è la prima interruzione per gli Acheron, come ti spieghi questa attività non continua?
Ci sono stati molti alti e bassi per gli Acheron. Ho lavorato con più musicisti di quanti ne ricordi. A volte la rabbia e le emozioni prendono il sopravvento e una persona prende decisioni serie senza pensarci davvero. L’ho fatto diverse volte. Ma quest’ultima volta ci ho pensato ed era ora di andare avanti? Gli Acheron toneranno mai più una band e registreranno un altro album? Assolutamente no! L’unico motivo per cui registrerei qualcosa sotto il nome Acheron, è se i membri originali di “Rites of the Black Mass” volessero registrare alcune canzoni speciali per amore dei vecchi tempi. Ma dubito che accadrà. Ma chi lo sa?

Da Acheron ad Acheron, il titolo di questo nuovo album è “Beyond Acheron”, perché hai voluto mantenere un legame con il tuo passato?
È tutto molto simbolico, un ponte da una band all’altra. Non sto cercando di liberarmi del mio passato. Sono molto orgoglioso di quello che ho fatto come Acheron. È come dire addio a un vecchio amico. Sono stato battezzato nel fiume del dolore e finalmente sono salito sulla riva. E ammettiamolo, il titolo dice praticamente tutto.

Potresti presentare la tua nuova formazione?
La Vincent Crowley Band è stata formata dall’ex chitarrista degli Acheron Art Taylor e da me. Siamo ottimi amici e dopo che gli Acheron si sono sciolti eravamo determinati a lavorare di ancora insieme su qualcosa di nuovo e speciale. Abbiamo reclutato il batterista Ryan Arter e di recente abbiamo assunto un secondo fantastico chitarrista di nome Eric Stewart. Stiamo ancora cercando un bassista a tempo pieno. Art e io abbiamo condiviso le parti di basso in studio.

Alcune canzoni incluse in “Beyond Acheron” sono state scritte originariamente per gli Acheron o per gli Infidel Reich?
Abbiamo lavorato su alcune di loro mentre eravamo ancora Acheron, ma non è mai stato utilizzato nulla. Semplicemente non sembravano vere canzoni degli Acheron. Abbiamo rielaborato i brani e li abbiamo cambiati parecchio per adattarli alla direzione che stavamo prendendo. Nessuna canzone usata è mai stata scritta per gli Infidel Reich.

Penso che questo sia il tuo album più vario, sei d’accordo?
Concordo! La cosa grandiosa di questa band è che non dobbiamo competere con gli album passati. Qui è tutto nuovo e non ci stiamo limitando nel processo creativo. Vogliamo solo scrivere grandi canzoni con musica interessante e testi macabri. L’obiettivo principale della Vincent Crowley Band è produrre canzoni che portino l’ascoltatore in altri luoghi. Proprio come leggere una storia oscura o guardare un film dell’orrore.

I testi sono ispirati dai maestri del terrore come Lovecraft e Poe: sei ancora interessato alle questioni religiose?
Verissimo! E molti altri scrittori e registi di classici oscuri. Per quanto riguarda la religione, sicuramente mi interessa ancora. Alcune delle cose più orribili sono causate da questa. La storia della religione è piena di violenze, omicidi, torture e stupri. Le mie convinzioni personali non sono religioni. La filosofia satanista è un qualcosa con cui sono molto d’accordo. Ma ai miei occhi non è una vera religione. Le religioni sono vili e putridi culti creati per schiavizzare i deboli e nutrirli. Alcuni cosiddetti satanisti sono religiosi. Li chiamo pecore nere. Nel corso degli anni mi sono evoluto dal mio passato e penso di essere molto più di un satanista. Le mie influenze provengono da molte filosofie, pratiche occulte e fatti scientifici differenti. Questi interessi influenzeranno i miei testi? Sono sicuro che a volte lo faranno. Ma non nello stesso modo in cui facevano negli Acheron.

La Vincent Crowley Band è soltanto uno studio project o ci saranno concerti futuri con questo moniker?
Questa è una band attiva che farà show dal vivo quando saremo in grado di farli. Intendiamo suonare quanti più spettacoli / festival possibili e viaggiare in posti nuovi e vecchi per suonare la nostra musica.

After thirty years fronting Acheron, Vincent Crowley realised that the band had reached its end. A new era of nightmare and horror is begun: “Beyond Acheron”, the first album by the Vincent Crowley Band, will be released via Odium Records this June: be ready to board… the dark ferryman is waiting.

Welcome Vincent, approximately 30 years ago the first album by Acheron, “Rites of the Black Mass”, was released by Turbo Music. Are you excited for this new beginning under Vincent Crowley band moniker? 
Yes indeed! After three decades of Acheron everything came full circle and it was time to start a new dark journey on a brand new sinister path. 

When did you understand the time of Acheron was finished?
After Acheron’s last recorded album, “Kult Des Hasses”, we had a lot of issues within the band. I put together a new line-up and decided we wouldn’t record anymore and just play shows. And we did play a lot of great places. We worked on some new material and even tried to demo some stuff, but it just didn’t work out. In 2018, we played our last show and called it quits. I felt I had done everything I wanted to do in that band regarding Satanic ideas and blunt anti-religious themes. There was no need to continue and just keep repeating past ideas. I wanted to still do something dark, but with a new twist and different lyrical topics.

 This is not the first hiatus for Acheron, how can you explain this not continuous activity?
There were a lot of ups and downs in Acheron. I’ve worked with more musicians than I can remember. Sometime anger and emotions take over and a person makes serious decisions without really thinking it through. I did that several times. But this last time I thought it through and it was time to move on? Will Acheron ever be a band again and record another album? Absolutely not! The only way I would record something under the Acheron name is if the original members of “Rites of the Black Mass” wanted to record a few special songs for old times sake. But I doubt that will even happen. But who knows?    

From Acheron to Acheron, the title of this new album is “Beyond Acheron”,why did you want to keep a connection with your past?
It is all very symbolic of a bridge from one band to another. I’m not looking to shed my past. I am very proud of what I did in Acheron. It is very much like saying goodbye to an old friend. I was baptized in the River of Woe and have finally come up on the shore. And lets face it, the title pretty much says it all.  

Could you to introduce your new line up?
Vincent Crowley was formed by ex-Acheron guitarist Art Taylor and myself. We are both very good friends and after Acheron broke up we were determined to work again together on something new and special. We recruited drummer Ryan Arter into the band and just recently hired a 2^nd amazing guitarist named Eric Stewart. We are still looking for a full time bass player. Art and I have been sharing the bass guitar duties in the studio.   

Some songs included in “Beyond Acheron” was originally written for Acheron or Infidel Reich?
We did work on a few while we were in Acheron, but nothing ever was used. They just didn’t feel like true Acheron songs. We re-worked the songs and changed them up a lot to fit the direction we were heading. No songs used were ever written for Infidel Reich.  

I think this is your most various album, are you agree?
Agreed! The great thing about this band is we don’t have to compete with past albums. This is all new and we are not limiting ourselves in the creative process. We just want to write great songs with interesting music and lyrics of the macabre. The main objective of Vincent Crowley is to produce songs that takes the listener to other places. Just like reading a grim story or watching a horror movie. 

The lyrics are inspired by masters of terror like Lovecraft and Poe: are you still interested in religious matters?
Very true! And many other writers and film makers of dark classics. As for religion, sure I am still interested in it. Some of the more horrifying things come from it. The history of religion is full of violence, murder, torture and rape. My personal beliefs are not religions. To me the Satanic philosophy is something I very much agree with. But it is not a true religion in my eyes. Religions are vile putrid cults that are created to enslave the weak and feed of them. Some so-called Satanists are religious. I call them Black Sheep. Throughout the years I have evolved from my past and think of myself being much more than a Satanist. My influences come from many different philosophies, occult practices and scientific facts. Will this interests influence my lyrics? I’m sure they will at times. But not in the same way they did in Acheron. 

Is the Vincent Crowley band just a studio project or there will be in future gigs under this moniker? 
This is a fully active band that will do live shows when we are able to do so. We fully intend to play as many shows/fests as we can and travel to new and old places to play our music.
