Dal 1989 i tedeschi Desaster hanno prodotto diversi grandi album di metal estremo. Dal 4 giugno 2021 hanno aperto la loro chiesa empia a tutti i loro fan, e così abbiamo deciso di parlare del nuovo album, “Churches Without Saints” (Metal Blade Records), con il cantante Sataniac.
Benvenuto Satainac, i Desaster sono nati nel 1988, qual è la formula per sopravvivere nel mondo della musica per 30-35 anni?
Ciao Giuseppe, i Desaster non fanno parte del vero big music biz, ma penso che la cosa più importante per sopravvivere a lungo come band è non prendersi troppo sul serio. E ovviamente amiamo quello che facciamo.
“Churches Without Saints” è il tuo sesto full-length con i Desaster, sei soddisfatto di questo ritorno sulle scene?
Non eravamo andati via, quindi non è un ritorno, ma io sono e siamo molto contenti del nuovo album. Soprattutto che abbiamo arruolato un batterista che si adatta perfettamente ai Desaster. Musicalmente e caratterialmente…
Come è cambiato il tuo ruolo nella band dal tuo album di debutto sino a “Churches Without Saints”?
Non credo che il mio ruolo sia cambiato dai tempi di “Divine Blasphemies”, scrivo i testi e mi occupo della voce, questo è quello che faccio da quando sono entrato nella band nel 2001!
Dai tempi di “Satan’s Soldiers Syndicate”, impiegate quattro \ cinque anni per pubblicare un nuovo album: come potresti spiegare questo lungo periodo di gestazione?
Invecchiamo e ovviamente ci sono sempre altre priorità oltre ai Desaster. Famiglia, lavoro, ecc. E infatti non avverto il bisogno di avere un nuovo album dei Desaster ogni anno.
Potresti presentarci il tuo nuovo batterista, Hont?
Sì, Hont è un mio buon amico e sicuramente un maniaco del metal. Abbiamo anche suonato insieme in una band chiamata Divine Genocide. Dopo la divisione dei Divine Genocide sono andato a finire nei Desaster e abbiamo perso i contatti per un po’. Ora, sembra essere il batterista perfetto per noi, perché è un maniaco del metal e una persona molto calma e amichevole.
Cosa significa veramente il titolo “Churches Without Saints”?
Basta dare uno sguardo all’ipocrisia dell’Homo Sapiens e cosa ne è stato di lui dopo che ha iniziato a seguire le religioni. Ci sono cose migliori nella vita. Bisogna fermare la follia!
Abbiamo davvero bisogno di santi?
Non ci sono santi da nessuna parte, quindi possiamo avere bisogno di ciò che non esiste. È una specie di gioco di ruolo, una favola…
La mia canzone preferita dell’album è “Exile Is Imminent”, come è nata questa traccia e qual è la tua canzone preferita?
Questa è stata realizzata mentre scriviamo tutte le canzoni. Jammiamo sui riff che Infernal presenta e proviamo a renderli una vera canzone. A volte ne usciamo vittoriosi, altre volte potrebbe essere migliore. Hahaha… Ho tre o quattro canzoni preferite: “Exile is Imminent”, “Learn To Love The Void”, “Endless Awakening” e la title track.
Qual è la situazione attuale per quanto riguarda i concerti in Germania? Ti aspetti una rapida ripresa dell’attività dal vivo?
Non ci sono piani concreti per un ritorno ai live nei prossimi mesi. Spero che questa situazione Covid finisca presto, così possiamo tornare di nuovo sul palco!
Since 1989 the German band Desaster has produced several great extreme metal albums. From 4 June 2021 they opened their unholy church to all their fans, and so we decided to talk about the new album, “Churches Without Saints” (Metal Blade Records), with the singer Sataniac.
Welcome Satainac, Desaster are born in 1988, what is the formula to survive in the music biz 30-35 years?
Hi Giuseppe, ok Desaster is not really a part of the real big music biz, but I think the most important thing to survive a long time as a band is that we don’t take ourselves too serious. And of course we love what we do.
“Churches Without Saints” is your sixth full-length with Desaster, are you satisfied with this come back?
We weren’t gone, so this is no come back, but I’m and we are very happy with the new album. Especially that we fund a drummer that fits perfect to Desaster. Musically and personally…
How is changed your role in the band from your debut album to “Churches Without Saints” ?
I don’t think that my role has changed since Divine Blasphemies, I write the lyrics and doing vocals, that’s what I do since I entered the band in 2001!
From”Satan’s Soldiers Syndicate” times, you need four\five years to release a new album: how could you explain this long gestation period?
We grow older and of course there are always other priorities next to Desaster. Family, work, etc. And in fact I don’t need a new Desaster album every year.
Could you to introduce your new drummer, Hont?
Yes, Hont is a good friend of mine and a metal maniac for sure. We also played together in a band called Divine Genocide. After the split of Divine Genocide I went to Desaster and we lost the contact for a while. Now, he seems to be the perfect drummer for us, because he is a metal manic and a very calm and friendly person.
What really means the title “Churches Without Saints”?
Have a look on the hypocritical Homo Sapiens, and what has become of them following religions. There are better things in life. Stop the madness!
Do we really need saints?
There aren’t saints anywhere, so in case we can’t need what don’t exists. It’s a kind of roleplay, a fairytale…
My favorite song on the album are “Exile Is Imminent”, how is born this track and what’s your favorite song?
This one was written as we write all songs. We jam the riffs that Infernal presents and try to make them a real song. Sometimes we are victorious, other times it could be better. Hahaha… I have three or four favorite songs: “Exile is Imminent”, “Learn To Love The Void”, “Endless Awakening” and the title track.
What is the current situation with regard to the gigs in Germany? Do you expect a fast resumption of live activity?
There are no concrete plans for a live comeback in the next months. I hope this Covid-situation will end soon, so that we can enter the stage again!
