I Criminal di Anton Reisenegger (Brujeria, Lock Up, Pentagram Chile) sono tornati con un disco, “Sacrificio” (Metal Blade), che affonda le proprie radici nel disagio sociale causato in Cile e nei Paesi di lingua spagnola dalla pandemia.
Benvenuto Anton, dopo 30 anni e 9 full-length, possiamo considerare il vostro nuovo album “Sacrifico” un ritorno al sound originale?
Ehi, grazie per avermi contattato! Sì, penso che in molti modi questo album si colleghi ai nostri primi due, tre album soprattutto per i ritmi più grovy e tribali e per i ritornelli più diretti, quasi singalong. Ma allo stesso tempo potrebbe benissimo essere il nostro album più estremo fino ad oggi, a volte al limite del grindcore.
Questa nuova release è il vostro manifesto definitivo?
Niente è definitivo. Siamo sempre stati concentrati sul momento e testimonieremo sempre le cose che accadono intorno a noi. Da un punto di vista musicale può essere qualcosa del genere però, perché penso che unisca tutti i nostri punti di forza che abbiamo sviluppato negli anni.
Che ne è dell’ambiente politico e sociale cileno dopo la pandemia di Covid?
Beh, tutto si è un po’ tranquillizzato dopo la rivolta dell’ottobre 2019, ma è una calma tesa. Alcune cose hanno iniziato a cambiare, ma le persone sono sospettose e vogliono vedere un vero cambiamento. È un processo che richiederà anni però. Spero che non venga fottuto da alcuni politici populisti e opportunisti.
Quanto è importante per te l’uso della lingua spagnola nelle tue canzoni in questa fase storica?
Bene, abbiamo già incluso canzoni in spagnolo dal nostro secondo album “Dead Soul” nel 1997 in poi, quindi è diventato una specie di marchio di fabbrica e qualcosa che i nostri fan si aspettano. Ora, in questo particolare momento, credo che abbia più senso che mai, perché parliamo di eventi contingenti che stanno accadendo nel mondo di lingua spagnola, non solo in Cile, quindi penso che le persone di quei paesi saranno in grado di entrare in sintonia con noi in modo più profondo.
Abbiamo bisogno di un sacrificio per la nostra salvezza? Ed è questa una chiave di lettura cristiana della salvezza?
Ci piace usare immagini cristiane (e anticristiane) nel nostro immaginario e nelle nostra grafiche, ma siamo probabilmente quanto c’è di più lontano dall’essere cristiani, ahah! In questo caso particolare, ciò che intendiamo è che un intero paese è stato sacrificato in nome dell’avidità e del potere.
E i nuovi membri? Perché hai preferito non semplicemente dei nuovi membri, ma bensì giovani musicisti?
Allora, con una storia di 30 anni alle spalle è difficile mantenere una formazione stabile. Le vite dei membri cambiano, alcuni vogliono e altri hanno bisogno di passare ad altre cose, quindi è sempre piacevole coinvolgere alcuni giovani musicisti che sono davvero entusiasti e disposti a sacrificare (nessun gioco di parole) altre cose per andare in giro e suonare musica. La maggior parte dei musicisti della mia età è già adagiata a modo suo e trova difficile adattarsi a situazioni specifiche, ma la generazione più giovane è molto più flessibile, quindi è un piacere lavorare con loro.
Guardandoti indietro, hai rimpianti?
Probabilmente molti. La vita è piena di decisioni e puoi fare solo una scelta, quindi non scoprirai mai cosa sarebbe successo se avessi fatto le cose in modo diverso. Col senno di poi è ovviamente sempre più facile dire “avrei dovuto fare le cose diversamente” ma sì, non posso negare che mi pento di non aver lasciato prima il mio paese per intraprendere la carriera di musicista.
Siete pronti a tornare in scena dopo l’emergenza pandemica?
Non ne sono sicuro, ahah. Probabilmente inizierò a fare un po’ di esercizio e a vivere in modo più sano prima di poter affrontare un tour.
Consiglieresti qualche band cilena che ti piace davvero?
Wow, ce ne sono così tanti, citerò solo le prime che mi vengono in mente: Poema Arcanus, Capilla Ardiente, Nuclear, Demoniac, Degotten, Ripper, Mourning Sun, Montaña Sagrada, Atomic Aggressor… beh, questo breve elenco è già qualcosa, ahah!
Anton Reisenegger‘s Criminal (Brujeria, Lock Up, Pentagram Chile) are back with a record, “Sacrificio” (Metal Blade), which has its roots in the social unrest caused in Chile and in Spanish-speaking countries by the pandemic.
Welcome Anton, after 30 years and 9 full-lengths, could we consider your new album “Sacrifico” a return to your original sound?
Hey, thanks for having me! Yes, I think in many ways this album connects to our first two, three albums because of the more grovy, tribal rhythms and the more straightforward, almost singalong choruses. But at the same time it very well may be our most extreme album to date, sometimes verging on grindcore.
Is this new release your definitive manifesto?
Nothing is definitive. We have always been and will always be commenting on the things that happen around us. From a musical point of view it may be something like that though, because I think it unites all the strengths that we have been developing over the years.
What’s about the Chilean political and social environment after the covid pandemic?
Well, it has all calmed down a little after the uprising in October 2019, but it is a tense calm. Some things have started to change, but the people are suspicious and want to see real change. It is a process that will take years though. I hope it doesn’t get fucked up by some populist, opportunist politicians.
How is important to you the use of the Spanish language in your songs in this historical phase?
Well, we’ve included songs in Spanish in our albums since our second album “Dead Soul” in 1997, so it has become kind of a trademark and something our fans have come to expect. Now in this particular moment in time I think it makes more sense than ever, because we’re talking about very concrete events that are happing in th Spanish-speaking world, not only Chile, so I think people from those countries will be able to relate to them in a stronger way.
Do we need a sacrifice for our salvation? And is this a Christian reading key of salvation?
We like to use Christian (and anti-Christian) imagery in our graphics, but we’re probably the farthest away from being Christian, haha! In this particular case, what we mean is that a whole country has been sacrificed in the name of greed ad power.
What’s about the new members ? Why did you prefer, not only new members, but young musicians?
Well, with a 30-year history it is always difficult to maintain a stable line-up. Member’s lives change, some want and some need to move on to other things, so it is always refreshing to get some young musicians in who are really enthusiastic and willing to sacrifice (no pun intended) other things in order to go out there and play music. Most musicians of my age are already set in their own ways and find it difficult to adapt to specific situations, but the younger generation is much more flexible, so it is a pleasure to work with them.
Looking back, do you have any regrets?
Probably a lot. Life is full of decisions, and you only get to make one choice, so you never find out what would have happened if you’d done things differently. In hindsight it is obviously always easier to say “I should have done things differently” but yes, I can’t deny I regret not leaving my country earlier to pursue a career as a musician.
Are you ready to back on stage after the pandemic emergency?
I’m not sure, haha, I will probably start to exercise and live healthier before I can do a tour.
Would you recommend some Chilean bands you really enjoy?
Wow, there’s so many, I’ll just name a few from the top of my head: Poema Arcanus, Capilla Ardiente, Nuclear, Demoniac, Degotten, Ripper, Mourning Sun, Montaña Sagrada, Atomic Aggressor… well, that’s already more than a few, haha!
