“What if…” (WormHoleDeath / Solid Rock Pr) è il nuovo album degli Asgaard. La band polacca, con il suo settimo disco, reinventa la propria formula introducendo sonorità più rock alla maniera di Katatonia, Amorphis, Moonspell, Opeth, Anathema. Qualche giorno fa abbiamo fatto una chiacchierata con Flumen (keyboards, samples, drum programming).

Benvenuto Flumen, è uscito “What If…”, qual è il vostro obiettivo da raggiungere con questo nuovo album?
Il nostro obiettivo principale era pubblicare questo album con un’etichetta di cui ci fidiamo. Leggendo le note di copertina si può notare che alcune parti strumentali sono state registrate alcuni anni fa e il processo stesso di registrazione, missaggio e mastering è terminato un anno fa. Onestamente, non ho particolari aspettative per questo album. Questo è il nostro settimo album. Ogni volta abbiamo offerto ai nostri ascoltatori un “prodotto” di alta qualità. Conosciamo il nostro valore, ma siamo anche consapevoli che i tempi migliori per una “carriera a livello mondiale” sono probabilmente andati, e sopravviviamo grazie al lavoro. La musica è principalmente il nostro hobby.

Dopo tutto il tempo investito nella registrazione, sei soddisfatto del risultato?
Sicuramente sì! Ognuno di noi ha dato il 100% di impegno. La produzione musicale è di altissimo livello. Naturalmente, dopo un’analisi più approfondita, ci sono alcune cose che penso che avrei potuto suonare meglio, arrangiare meglio, ma credo che questi siano dettagli meno importanti.

“What If…” è più rock oriented rispetto alle vostre precedenti uscite, avete pianificato questo cambiamento prima di scrivere il nuovo album o questo suono è il risultato di un processo di scrittura spontaneo?
La risposta è sì e no. No, perché non abbiamo deciso in quale stile dovrebbe essere realizzato prima di registrare l’album. Noi invece siamo sempre più esperti (o semplicemente più grandicelli, se preferite). Crediamo che ci siano altri mezzi di espressione oltre a suonare, ad esempio, metal straight-up. In questo album abbiamo voluto dimostrare che siamo “multitasking” e che possiamo usare molti mezzi espressivi. Spero che ci siamo riusciti.

In passato altre band metal – Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Anathema – hanno cambiato sound, come spieghi questa esigenza che alcuni artisti avvertono nel corso della loro carriera?
Secondo me, questa è una necessità di crescità. Le persone cambiano, cambiano i loro interessi e preferenze musicali, sviluppano la loro esperienza di musicisti. Personalmente, penso che la mancanza di cambiamento possa dimostrare che una data band non sta sviluppando o ampliando i suoi orizzonti musicali. Per me è più naturale cambiare, in termini di evoluzione stilistica di un gruppo musicale, che ristagnare.

Come è possibile conciliare abilità tecniche e feeling?
È facile! Non siamo virtuosi, quindi questo non è un nostro problema! Seriamente, ogni buon brano musicale deve essere caratterizzato da una linea melodica interessante, bei passaggi musicali, buon arrangiamenti, feeling generale e altri elementi. A volte penso che il nostro “svantaggio” sia l’eccessiva polifonia. L’ascoltatore quindi non sa quale linea melodica è la più importante, quella su cui concentrarsi in un dato momento. Tuttavia, dopo un altro ascolto dell’album, potrebbe trovare altri elementi che in precedenza aveva trascurato. In questo caso, però, credo che possa essere un vantaggio.

Quali sono le tue canzoni preferite di “What If…”?
Non credo di avere una canzone preferita. Agli ascoltatori in Polonia piacciono molto le due canzoni in polacco “Sny na jawie” e “W sercu nieświata”.

Perché due canzoni dell’album sono cantate in polacco?
Le due canzoni “Sny na jawie” e “W sercu nieświata” sono cantate in polacco. Secondo me è abbuiamo decisamente “osato” tardi per con due canzoni in polacco! Avremmo dovuto farlo prima. Forse perché la lingua polacca non è così popolare. Inoltre non è “musicale” e piacevole all’orecchio come, ad esempio, il francese o l’italiano. Ha relativamente molte sibilanti e potrebbe sembrare troppo “duro”. D’altra parte, le risorse della lingua polacca sono enormi e possono essere espresse in molti modi. Una dei due testi è di Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, un eccellente poeta polacco.

“What If…” esce in tre edizioni: quali sono le differenze?
La prima (la versione più economica) è realizzata come jewelcase, la seconda è un digipack, la terza (più costosa e limitata) è un digipack in una scatola di legno con adesivi, plettri e corde per chitarra. La cosa più importante è che ogni release ha la stessa grafica di alta qualità realizzata dal prof. Bartłomiej Trzos.

E se non avessi iniziato a fare musica anni fa, cosa saresti oggi?
Penso sia impossibile. Io e mio fratello maggiore Hetzer abbiamo studiato alla scuola di musica, quindi se non suonassimo negli Asgaard, probabilmente suoneremmo in altre band. In ogni caso, saremmo musicisti dilettanti. Siamo troppo legati alla musica per non suonarla. Cerchiamo di essere chiari: Asgaard è solo il nostro hobby (tuttavia cerchiamo di essere professionali in quello che facciamo). Trascorriamo il nostro tempo libero componendo, registrando e facendo concerti. Tuttavia, dal punto di vista del nostro stile di vita, gli Asgaard non cambiano molto.

The Polish band, with its seventh record, reinvents its formula introducing more rock-oriented sound in veins of Katatonia, Amorphis, Moonspell, Opeth, Anathema. Some days ago, we had a chat with Flumen (keyboards, samples, drum programming).

Welcome Flumen, “What If…” is out, which is your goal with this new album?
Our main goal was to release this album with a label that we trust. Reading the sleeve notes you can notice that some of the instrument parts were recorded a few years ago, and the very process of recording, mixing and mastering ended a year ago. Honestly, I have no particular expectations for this album. This is our 7th album. Each time we offered our listeners a “product” of high quality. We know our worth, but we are also aware that the best times for a “world career” are probably long behind us, and we survive thanks to work. Music is mainly our hobby.

After all the time invested on the recording, are you happy with the result?
Definitely yes! Each of us gave 100% commitment. Music production is at a very high level. Of course, after a deeper analysis, there are a few things that I think I could have played better, arranged better, but I think these are less important details.

“What If…” is more rock oriented then your previous releases, did you plane this change before to write the new album or is this sound the result of spontaneous writing process?
The answer is yes and no. No, because we did not decide in what style it should be realized before recording the album. On the other hand, we are more and more experienced (or simply older, if you prefer). We believe that there are other means of expression than playing, for example, straight-up metal. On this album we wanted to show that we are “multifunctional” and we can use many means of expression. Hope we have succeeded.

In the past other metal bands – Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Anathema – have changed their sound, how do you explain this need that some artists feel later during their career?
In my opinion, this is a need for development. People change, their musical interests and preferences change, they develop their experience as musicians. Personally, I think that the lack of change may prove that a given band is not developing or broadening its musical horizons. For me, it is more natural to change, the stylistic evolution of a music group, than to stagnate.

How is possible to balance technical skills and feeling?
It’s easy! We are not virtuosos, so this does not apply to us! Seriously, every good piece of music must be characterized by an interesting melodic line, nice musical phrases, good arrangement, general atmosphere and other elements. Sometimes I think our ‘downside’ is the excessive polyphony. The listener then doesn’t know which melody line is more important, on which to focus at a given moment. However, after another listening to the album, he may find other elements that he had previously overlooked. In this case, however, I believe that it may be an advantage.

Which are your prefer songs from “What If…”?
I don’t think I have a favorite song. Listeners in Poland really like two Polish songs “Sny na jawie” and “W sercu nieświata” (“At the heart of the no-world”).

Why are two songs on the album sung in Polish?
The two songs “Sny na jawie” and “W sercu nieświata” are sung in Polish. In my opinion, it was definitely too late to “dare” to sing two songs in Polish! We should have done it earlier. Maybe because the Polish language is not so popular. It is also not as “singing” and pleasant to the ear as, for example, French or Italian. It has relatively many sibilants and may feel too “harsh”. On the other hand, the resources of the Polish language are enormous and can be expressed a lot. One of the works is by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, an excellent Polish poet.

“What If…” is out in three editions: what are the differences?
The first (the cheapest version) is made as a jewel case, the second is a digipack, the third one (the most expensive and limited) is a digipack in a wooden box with stickers, guitar picks and stripes. The most important thing is, that every release has the same high-quality graphics made by prof. Bartłomiej Trzos.

What if you hadn’t started making music years ago what would you be today?
I think is impossible. Me and my big brother Hetzer were learning in music school, so if we weren’t playing Asgaard, we’d probably be playing in other bands. In any case, we would be amateur musicians. We are too closely associated with music not to play it. Let’s be clear.: Asgaard is just our hobby (however we try to be professional in what we do). We spend our free time composing, recording and playing concerts. However, from the point of view of our lifestyle, Asgaard does not change much.
