La scena polacca si è fatta conoscere soprattutto per il death e black metal, però il movimento è popolato da entità altrettanto degne di nota, anche se con sonorità meno estreme. Di difficile catalogazione – groove metal? alternative metal? – il sound dei Chaos Engine Research, band che da poco ha il proprio secondo album, “Faces”, per la Metal Scrap Records.
Benvenuti ragazzi! Potreste presentare la tua band ai nostri lettori?
Ciao, noi siamo Chaos Engine Research da Czestochowa/Polonia. La band esiste dal 2007, quindi quest’anno celebriamo il nostro quindicesimo anniversario. Durante questo periodo, abbiamo registrato due album – “The Legend Written By An Anonymous Spirit Of Silence” e “Faces” – entrambi pubblicati per la Metal Scrap Records.
Vi andrebbe di spiegare il significato del nome della band?
Chaos Engine Research significa ricerca della verità, del suo senso o come preferisci chiamarlo. Questa ricerca si riflette nei testi, ma si applica anche alla musica che suoniamo: siamo ispirati da moltissime band e generi metal, quindi è difficile definire chiaramente il nostro stile. Siamo stati descritti come alternative metal o, più recentemente, come band death-groove metal, ma queste sono solo etichette e se qualcuno vuole raggiungere il nostro album, può scoprire che le canzoni sono notevolmente diverse l’una dall’altra . Questo è il nostro obiettivo: vogliamo sperimentare e trarre il meglio da diversi tipi di musica e, allo stesso tempo, cerchiamo di farlo in modo da sembrare coerente e concettuale.
Come è nato il vostro nuovo album, “Faces”?
Per quanto riguarda l’album “Faces”, è difficile credere quanto sia stata difficile la strada per portare a termine queste registrazioni. Innanzitutto, i cambi di formazione, soprattutto la partenza di Jack, e diversi mesi dedicati alla ricerca di un sostituto, che alla fine abbiamo abbandonato. Poi, una sessione di registrazione senza intoppi e la definizione dei termini con il nostro label manager- Anatoly della Metal Scrap. Proprio quando sembrava che fossimo sull’ultimo rettilineo – è arrivato ilCovid e la premiere è stata rimandata più volte. Infine, la guerra in Ucraina – e come sapete Metal Scrap è ucraina. In effetti, c’erano alcune voci che dicevano che c’era una specie di maleficio su questo album (ride). Ma finalmente è qui. Huuh… È stato un viaggio infernale.
Quali sono le principali differenze tra il vostro primo album, “The Legend Written By An Anonymous Spirit Of Silence”, e il nuovo “Faces”?
Dal nostro punto di vista, “Faces” è decisamente più maturo e più coeso nel suono e nell’arrangiamento. Nel primo album c’era più “follia” e secondo noi era un po’ più “irregolare” – questo è probabilmente è dipeso anche da una questione di esperienza. La seconda cosa è il cambio di direzione: prima il nostro marchio di fabbrica erano due frontman. Ora questa responsabilità ricade interamente su Darrior. Oltre a questo, c’è stato un cambiamento nel ruolo di batterista: Ivo era un musicista più esperto di Mati, anche più esperto di altri generi musicali. Mati ha dovuto lavorare molto durante le registrazioni: il livello era molto alto.
Ma come lo definireste il vostro suono? Alternative, groove o death metal?
Come abbiamo detto, è difficile definire chiaramente il nostro stile. Nella nostra musica, ascolterai influenze di Meshuggah o Gojira insieme a Deftones o Slipknot, e poi elementi di thrash metal e groove metal. Ci sono canzoni in cui puoi sentire le influenze davvero pesanti – penso che il fatto che Muzzy suoni contemporaneamente nella band grindcore Tranquillizer247 non sia privo di conseguenze su di noi, dato che molti riff escono dalla sua mano. I CER sono nati dalla passione per tutti i tipi di musica metal. Chitarre dall’accordatura heavy, batteria pesante e voce aggressiva: questa è la nostra linea.
Qual è il concept dell’album?
E anche qui bisogna fare riferimento al debutto. “The Legend…” era una storia chiusa – questo comportava alcune limitazioni, come l’ordine delle tracce predeterminato e immutabile. Volevamo che anche “Faces” fosse un album concettuale, ma grazie alla struttura – una sorta di raccolta di storie – abbiamo avuto più libertà sull’ordine delle tracce e quindi una maggiore capacità di controllare l’intensità, quando premere sull’acceleratore e quando prendere fiato.
Leggendo la tracklist ho subito notato una particolarità: perché tutti i titoli dei brani contengono una sola parola?
Di nuovo, un riferimento al debutto (ride). Si tratta di un giochino perverso – legato al nome follemente lungo del debutto. In “Faces” volevamo che tutto fosse corto e conciso. Abbiamo finito con l’intitolare ogni canzone, così come l’intero album, con una sola parola. Ogni traccia descrive un volto, il personaggio principale della propria storia.
Come è cambiato il vostro suono?
Per la seconda volta abbiamo lavorato con Przemek Wejmann, per rendere il nostro suono organico. Siamo tutti della vecchia scuola in questo senso – nel senso di chitarra, amplificatore e microfono. Non abbiamo utilizzato alcun trucco come Kemper di Fractal: tutto è analogico e radicale. Possiamo anche parlare di qualche ispirazione Mastodon.
Andrete in tour durante l’autunno?
Stiamo programmando un concerto-anteprima e alcuni concerti fuori durante l’autunno. Niente di spettacolare perché purtroppo abbiamo l’impressione che il mondo si stia ancora riprendendo dal Covid. Invitiamo tutti, soprattutto i giovani ascoltatori, a spegnere il computer e ad andare ai concerti delle band locali. Noi siamo aperto anche a proposte di altre band per suonare insieme.
The Polish scene has made itself known above all for death and black metal, but the movement is populated by equally noteworthy entities, albeit with less extreme sounds. Difficult to catalog – groove metal? alternative metal? – the sound of Chaos Engine Research, a band that has recently released the second album, “Faces”, for Metal Scrap Records.
Welcome guys! Could you introduce your band to our readers?
Hi. Chaos Engine Research here, from Czestochowa/Poland. The band has been around since 2007 – so this year we are celebrating our fifteenth anniversary. During this time, we recorded two albums – “The Legend Written By An Anonymous Spirit Of Silence” and “Faces” – both released by Metal Scrap Records.
Could you explain the meaning of the band name?
Chaos Engine Research means the search for the truth, for the meaning or however you would like to call it. This search has it’s reflection in the lyrics but it also applies to the music we play – we are inspired by a great many bands and metal genres, so it is hard to clearly define our style. We’ve been referred to as alternative metal or, more recently, as a death-groove metal band, but these are just labels, and if someone wants to reach for our album, they can discover that the songs are significantly different from each other. That was also the goal – we want to experiment and take the best out of different kinds of music, and at the same time, we try to make it sound coherent and conceptual.
How your new album, “Faces” was born?
As for the “Faces” album, it’s hard to believe how hard the road to finalizing this recording was. First, changes in the line-up and especially the departure of Jack, and several months devoted to the search for a replacement – which we eventually abandoned. Later, a smooth recording session and setting the terms with the publisher – Anatoly of Metal Scrap. Just when it seemed that we were on the last straight – the era of Covid arrived and the premiere was postponed several times. Finally, the war in Ukraine – and as you know Metal Scrap is from Ukraine. As a matter of fact, there were some voices that there was some kind of doom over this album (laughs). But it’s finally here. Huuh… It was a hell of a journey.
What are the main differences between your first album, “The Legend Written By An Anonymous Spirit Of Silence”, and the new one “Faces”?
From our perspective, “Faces” is definitely more mature material and more cohesive in sound and arrangement. On the first album, there was more “madness” and in our opinion it was a little more “uneven” – this is probably also a matter of experience. The second thing is the change of direction – earlier our trademark was two frontmen. Now this responsibility falls entirely on Darrior. In addition to this, there was a change in the position of drummer – Ivo was a more experienced musician than Mati, also more versed in other musical genres. Mati had to put a lot of work into this recording – the bar was set very high.
How do you define your actual sound? Alternative, Groove or Death Metal?
As we said – it’s hard to clearly define our style. In our music, You’ll hear influences of Meshuggah or Gojira alongside Deftones or Slipknot, and then elements of Thrash Metal and Groove Metal. There are songs where you can hear influences of really heavy playing – we think that the fact that Muzzy plays simultaneously in the Grindcore band Tranquillizer247 is also not without impact, as a lot of riffs come out of his hand. CER was born out of a passion to all kinds of Metal music. Heavy tuned guitars, strong drums and aggressive vocals – this is our direction.
What’s about the album concept?
And here again we must refer to the debut. “The Legend…” was a closed story – this entailed certain limitations, such as the order of the tracks being predetermined and unchangeable. We wanted “Faces” to be a conceptual album as well, but due to the structure – collection of the stories, we had more influence on the order of the tracks and thus more ability to control the intensity of when we want to push pedal to the metal and when there is a moment to take a breathe.
Reading the tracklist, I immediately noticed a peculiarity: why do all the song titles contain only one word?
Again, a reference to the debut (laughs). It was about perversity – in relation to the insanely long name of the debut (“The legend written by an anonymous spirit of silence”). On “Faces” we wanted short and succinct. We ended up with each song as well as the whole album titled with just one word. Each track describes one face – one main character of his own story.
How does your sound change?
For a second time we worked with Przemek Wejmann, to make our sound organic. We are all old-school in this regard – in the sense of guitar, amp, cab and microphone. We didn’t use any simulation or modeling like Kemper of Fractal – everything is analog and rootsy. We can talk about some Mastodon inspiration in this theme.
Will you go on tour during the Autumn?
We are planning a premiere concert and a few away concerts during the autumn. Nothing spectacular because unfortunately we have the impression that the world is still recovering from Covid. We encourage everyone – especially young listeners – to turn off the compuer and go to the concerts of local bands. We are also open to propositions from other bands to play together.
