Non lasciatevi ingannare dal guerriero morente raffigurato nella copertina del nuovo disco dei Conan, “Evidence of Immortality” (Napalm Records \ All Noir). La band inglese è viva e vegeta e capace ancora una volta di randellare gli ascoltatori con pesanti dosi di “caveman battle doom”.
Ciao Chris (Fielding), grazie per avermi concesso questa intervista. Avete registrato “Evidence of Immortality” durante l’emergenza Covid 19, la pandemia ha cambiata la vostra routine in studio?
Come è capitato per la maggior parte delle band, abbiamo trovato molto complicato ritrovarci per scrivere e suonare. Soprattutto perché Johnny, il nostro batterista, vive in Irlanda. Siamo una band che riesce più facilmente a tirar fuori del materiale quando ci scambiamo idee a vicenda in una stanza, quindi è stato un processo piuttosto frustrante inviarcele tramite e-mail. Dal nostro primo tentativo di iniziare il processo di scrittura nel dicembre 2019 fino a quando siamo entrati in studio per registrare due anni dopo, è sembrato che fosse passata un’eternità. Tuttavia, quando abbiamo effettivamente iniziato a registrare, il materiale è andato giù liscio rapidamente e spontaneamente, quindi da questo punto di vista ci è sembrato tutto normale.
Dopo aver pubblicato quattro album che vi hanno garantito una crescente notorietà, avete avvertito particolari pressioni durante la registrazione di “Evidence of Immortality”?
Non proprio, penso di parlare a nome di tutti i ragazzi quando dico che eravamo solo entusiasti di sfornare del nuovo materiale e poi suonarlo dal vivo on the road.
Quale pensi che possa essere per i vostri fan la cosa più sorprendente di “Evidence of Immortality”?
L’album suona sicuramente molto Conan, con una certa enfasi sulla parte heavy, tuttavia non ci piace negarci qualcosa di nuovo per consentire alla musica di progredire e non risultare stagnante. Che si tratti di aggiungere influenze grindcore oppure delle parti con synth.
L’album vede anche la partecipazione dell’ex membro Dave Perry in “Grief Sequence”, cosa hai provato a lavorare di nuovo con lui in studio?
È stato fantastico lavorare di nuovo con Dave. Ho avvertito che la traccia finale “Grief Sequence” avesse decisamente bisogno di sintetizzatori, abbiamo contattato Dave perché sapevamo che sarebbe stato perfetto ed è stato un bel ritorno all’EP split su cui ha suonato nel 2011. Il suo contributo è stato immenso e ha trasformato la traccia in qualcos’altro!
A cosa si riferisce il titolo “Evidence of Immortality”?
Si riferisce al fatto che anche se gli eroi muoiono nelle loro spoglie terrene, essi un giorno rivivranno per combattere nel subconscio dei guerrieri di domani.
Il soldato nella copertina disegnata da Tony Roberts non mi sembra proprio immortale…
Ah! Beh è già apparso sulle copertine, in momenti di trionfo oppure di sventura, di tutti i nostri album, quindi puoi essere sicuro che tornerà di nuovo.
Potresti dirmi cinque band che hanno dimostrato la propria immortalità?
Prima risposta ovvia e scontata: Black Sabbath! Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Nirvana, Iron Maiden.
Cosa ne pensi dello stato di salute dell’attuale scena doom metal?
Chiaramente c’è ancora un mercato vivo per queste sonorità, dato che stiamo suonando molto, anche se non credo che rientriamo perfettamente nella definizione che molti danno di doom. Ma se includi tutti i sottogeneri a cui viene associato, dallo stoner rock alla psichedelia fino all’avant garde, allora c’è ancora molto da fare.
Ultima domanda: quale pensi sia il miglior supporto fisico per la tua musica, CD o vinile?
Amo il vinile, è una sorta di ossessione per me: lo trovo un formato infinitamente frustrante e gratificante allo stesso tempo! Un disco dal suono eccezionale è una cosa che dà gioia, tuttavia uno che suona male è un incubo. È un formato con molte imperfezioni e limitazioni, tutte da considerare durante la registrazione, il missaggio e il mastering, oltre che, ovviamente, nel processo di produzione. Se fai tutto bene, dovresti avere un album dal suono eccezionale che sarà un piacere ascoltare. Aggiungi a ciò il bonus di una bella copertina. I CD suonano molto bene, ascolti alla perfezione tutto ciò che ci è registrato sopra, sono sicuramente molto più divertenti del semplice streaming.

Hi Chris (Fielding), thanks for doing this interview. You released “Evidence of Immortality” during Covid 19 emergency, did the pandemic change your studio routine?
Like most bands, we found it very difficult to actually get together to write and jam. Especially as Johnny our drummer lives in Ireland. We’re a band that finds it easier to come up with material when we’re all bouncing ideas off each other in one room so it was quite a frustrating process of sending ideas over email. Since our first attempt at starting the writing process back in December 2019 until we actually got into the studio to record two years later it felt like a long time coming. However, when we actually began recording properly the material went down quickly and easily so in that respect it felt like normal.
After releasing four albums that have guaranteed you growing notoriety, did you feel any particular pressure during the recording of “Evidence of Immortality”?
Not really, I think I speak for all the guys when I say that we were just excited to get the new material down and then get to play it live on the road.
What do you think for your fans will be the most surprising thing about ““Evidence of Immortality”?
The album still sounds very much like a Conan album, with the emphasis on heavy – however we never like to feel that we can’t try something new to allow the music to progress and not feel stagnant. Whether that’s adding influences from grindcore to big synth sections.
The album also sees former band member Dave Perry perform on “Grief Sequence”, what did you feel to work with him in studio again?
It was fantastic to work with Dave again. I felt that the final track “Grief Sequence” was really crying out for synths, we approached Dave as we knew he’d be perfect and it was a nice nod to the split EP he played on back in 2011. His contribution was immense and just made the track into something else entirely!
What does the title “Evidence of Immortality” refer to?
It is a reference to whether our heroes ever really die, or whether they live on again to fight another day in the sub conscience of tomorrow’s warriors.
The soldier in the cover designed by Tony Roberts does not seem immortal to me…
Ha! Well he appears again and again in various states of triumph or doom across all our albums, so you can be sure he’ll be back again.
Could you tell me five bands that have proven their immortality?
Obvious and most boring answer first, but obviously: Black Sabbath! Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Nirvana, Iron Maiden.
What are your thoughts on the current state of doom metal?
Clearly there’s still a healthy market for it as we’re playing a lot, although I don’t really feel like we fit with a lot of what is seen as doom. But if you include all the associated sub genres like stoner rock to psychedelic to the more avant garde end then there is a lot still going for it.
Last, question: what do you think is the best physical medium for your music, CD or vinyl?
I love vinyl, it’s a bit of an obsession for me – I find the format endlessly frustrating and rewarding at the same time! A great sounding record is a thing of joy, however one that sounds bad is a nightmare. It’s a format with many imperfections and limitations, all of which need to be considered when recording, mixing and mastering the music, as well as obviously the manufacturing process. Get all that right and you should have a great sounding album that’ll be a pleasure to listen to. Add to that the bonus of a the artwork on a 12” sleeve. CD’s are fine, they sound like what you put on them, still more fun than simply streaming it.
