Gli svedesi Transport League non si sono mai guardati indietro da quando, nel 1994, sono stati formati dall’ex cantante dei B-Thong Tony Jelencovich. La band ha attraversato molte difficoltà nel corso degli anni, ma il groove è sempre rimasto intatto come dimostra il nuovo album “Kaiserschnitt” (Mighty Music).
Ciao Tony, siamo nel bel mezzo di nuova ondata di pandemia come state reagendo tu e gli altri ragazzi?
Bene, siamo ben saldi nella nostra passione per la musica e siamo anche una squadra compatta e forte. Non ci resta che lanciare la monetina e trovare altre opportunità.
Il vostro precedente album, “A Million Volt Scream”, è uscito nel 2019 all’inizio di settembre: siete riusciti a promuovere il disco dal vivo o siete stati bloccati dall’emergenza covid?
Abbiamo fatto appena quattro spettacoli ed è stato un peccato. Non abbiamo avuto altra scelta che metterci a lavoro sui nuovi brani e prenotare lo studio. I nostri fan ci hanno aiutato con i finanziamenti e oltre a questo abbiamo venduto un sacco di merchandising. Amiamo i nostri fan.
“Kaiserschnitt” è nato durante il lockdown? L’album è stato influenzato dal tuo isolamento?
Sì, il titolo ha sicuramente a che fare con l’emergenza, e sembrava perfetto in questi tempi strani.
“Kaiserschnitt” sta per “taglio cesareo”: questo titolo ha un significato positivo o negativo? È un nuovo inizio o una rottura con il passato?
Ha un significato totalmente neutro. Beh, abbiamo prodotto noi stessi l’album, è stata una sfida, ma il risultato è ottimo. Abbiamo usato i Grand Recordings per batteria, voce e mix e El Bastardo Studios (studio Henrik Danhages) per chitarre e basso. Tutto progettato da Dan Johansson (ex Mary Beats Jane) e Henrik Danhage (Evergrey). Il mix è fatto da Svein Jensen.
Avevi un’idea di come volevi che suonasse l’album, o ciascuna delle tracce e l’intera opera hanno preso forma in fase di realizzazione?
Abbiamo parlato con Svein Jensen che ha mixato l’album su come volevamo che fosse il suono e il mix. La nostra idea era di avere più chitarre rispetto ai due album precedenti. Il suono è un colpo diretto in faccia ricco di energia e atmosfera rock’n’roll.
Durante l’ascolto sento un susseguirsi di stati d’animo diversi: è questo il tuo disco più ricco di emozioni?
Forse lo è, le canzoni sono arrivate facilmente e noi abbiamo seguiato il flusso.
Qual è il tuo segreto per mantenere il vostro sound fresco ma fottutamente Transport League?
Hahaha, beh, siamo semplicemente noi. Cerchiamo di mantenere la nostra energia ma cerchiamo di trovare nuovi approcci come sempre. Io sono il principale autore di riff insieme a Peter, ma tutti noi della band svolgiamo una parte molto importante nella creazione del suono e dell’arrangiamento. Siamo ragazzi dalla mentalità aperta.
Trovare Sal Abruscato (ex-Type O Negative, A Pale Horse Named Death) in “March, Kiss, Die” e Christian Sture (Heal) nella title track. Come sono nati questi contributi?
Abbiamo fatto un tour di supporto agli APHND nel 2019 e io e Sal siamo rimasti in contatto da buoni amici. Gli ho chiesto se era interessato a fare da guestvocals, e il resto è storia, il risultato è ottimo. Christian Sture è il grande cantante dei GBG che ammiro, e anche il suo contributo è di prim’ordine.
Sei e sei stato coinvolto in molte band, ma cosa hanno di unico i Transport League per te?
Questa è la mia creatura dal 1994. I Transport League ha subito molti colpi nel corso degli anni, ma non ci siamo mai arresi.
The Swedes Transport League never looked back since, in 1994, they were formed by ex-B-Thong vocalist Tony Jelencovich. The band has gone thru many charges thru the years, but the groove has always remained as evidenced by the new album “Kaiserschnitt” (Mighty Music).
Hi Tony, in the midst of the current new pandemic wave how are you and the rest of the guys holding up?
Well, we are strong in our passion for music and we are also a tight and strong unit. We just had to flip the coin and look for other opportunities.
Your previous album, “A Million Volt Scream”, was release in 2019 at begging of September: did you manage to promote the record live or were you blocked by the covid emergency?
We did like 4 shows and it´s a pity. We had no other option than to wrap up the songwriting and book the studio. Our fans helped us with funding and we sold a lot of merchandise on top of that. We love our fans.
“Kaiserschnitt” si born during the lockdown? Was the album influenced by your isolation?
Yes, the title has to do with emergency for sure, and it just felt perfect in these strange times.
“Kaiserschnitt” stand for “caesarean section”: does this title have a positive or negative meaning? Is it a new beginning or a break with the past?
It just has a meaning, totally neutral. Well, we produced the album ourselves to it was a challenge, but the outcome is great. We used Grand Recordings for drums, vocals & mix and El Bastardo Studios ( Henrik Danhages studio) for guitars & bass. Everything engineered by Dan Johansson ( ex Mary Beats Jane) & Henrik Danhage ( Evergrey). Mix is done by Svein Jensen.
Did you have an idea of how you wanted the album to sound, or did each of the tracks and the whole thing take shape as it was being developed?
We had some talks with Svein Jensen who mixed the album about how we wanted the sound & mix to be. Our idéa was to have more guitars upfront than on the previous two albums. The sound is in your face with great energy and rocknroll vibe.
While listening, I feel a succession of different moods: is this your most emotional record?
Maybe it is, the songs just comes along easily, and we go with the flow.
Which is your secret to maintain your sound fresh but fuckin Transport League?
Hahaha, well, it is just us, we try to maintain in our energy but try to find new approaches as always. I am the main riff master along side with Peter, but all of us in the band are a very important part of the sound and arrangement. We are open-minded boys.

We toured as support to APHND in 2019, and me and Sal stayed in contact as good friends. I asked him if he would be interested in doing to guestvocals, and the rest is history, the outcome is great. Christian Sture is a great vocalist from GBG which i admire, and his contribution is also top notch.
