“Arcana Rissing” (Peaceville Records) è l’album di debutto dei Coffin Storm, la nuova band composta da un trio di veterani norvegesi di Kolbotn, la cui formazione è composta da Apollyon (Aura Noir/Lamented Souls), Bestial Tormentor (Infernö/Lamented Souls) e da Fenriz dei Darkthrone. Quest’opera è un ottimo mix di classic, doom e thrash metal, in stile Candlemass, Mercyful Fate ed Exodus…

Metal classico, thrash metal, doom metal o semplicemente Kolbotn metal?
Se intendi per i Coffin Storm, allora tutto. Personalmente ho iniziato con il thrash metal… poi il doom… poi ho iniziato ad apprezzare il metal più classico quando sono cresciuto.
Qual è il tuo primo ricordo legato al metal a Kolbotn?
Dipende. Se i Kiss possono essere definiti metal, ricordo di aver messo un mangianastri davanti agli altoparlanti a casa del mio amico per registrare “Alive II”. Quello era l’ultimo anno della scuola materna 79/80. Dopodiché ho dei bei ricordi legati a un ragazzo più grande che andava in giro con uno stereo e ascoltava metal mentre noi giocavamo a calcio nel cortile della scuola. Alcuni anni dopo la sua band suonò con i Darkthrone nel cinema locale. Inoltre ho un ricordo di quando comprai la compilation “Metal Killers” su cassetta e ascoltai “Fast As a Shark” per la prima volta.
È sbagliato considerare i Coffin Storm una continuazione dei Lamented Souls?
Non completamente, dato che io e i Bestial Tormentor abbiamo realizzato tutta la musica per entrambe le band. Ma penso che ci siamo resi conto che i Lamented Souls non torneranno insieme a breve termine. La nostra ultima prova risale a uno spettacolo di 11 anni fa. Noi due volevamo semplicemente suonare di nuovo insieme e abbiamo iniziato a suonare la chitarra una volta alla settimana. Avevo molto materiale per Lamented Souls ma non l’abbiamo utilizzato. Abbiamo realizzato nuovo materiale, e molto più orientato sul thrash lento/medio che doom classico. La canzone “Arcana Rising”, invece, è un brano che abbiamo realizzato molto tempo fa destinata ai Lamented Souls. Ho una versione strumentale del 2008, credo. Ed eravamo ansiosi di sentirla con la voce di Fenriz.
Come è stato coinvolto Fenriz nella band?
Ha ascoltato una registrazione che avevamo fatto in sala prove. E poi Bestial Tormentor gli ha chiesto se voleva cantare.
Penso che “Arcana Rising” abbia diversi livelli di percezione. Sembra un disco semplice, low-fi, ma man mano che lo ascolti cresce e puoi percepire sempre più sfumature sonore. È una cosa intenzionale o semplicemente avete collegato i jack e vi siete messi ia suonare?
Penso che tu abbia ragione. Volevo che suonasse molto grezzo e simile a una prova/live. Ma allo stesso tempo succedono un sacco di cose e chitarre diverse suonano cose diverse. Non è una live band quindi possiamo permettervi di imbrogliare incidendo 6 chitarre una sopra l’altra. Ma non per incasinare il tutto in un modo che lo renda senza vita… Come ripulire tutte le tracce e comprimerle a morte e usare la traccia clic, copia/incolla. Per tutti noi la perfezione riguarda l’imperfezione… il fatto che tu possa sentire i sentimenti o le difficoltà del musicista attraverso la registrazione. Non sto dicendo che questo sia un album perfetto per me, ma sono abbastanza soddisfatto del feeling generale.
Penso che “Open the Gallows” sia la canzone manifesto di questo album, sei d’accordo con me?
Beh, grazie perché è l’unica canzone che è esclusivamente mia! Il piano iniziale era quello di realizzare una strumentale. Ho sempre amato quelle lunghe dei Metallica… “Orion”/”Call of Cthulhu”. Ma abbiamo deciso molto presto di includere la voce, ed è stata la decisione giusta. I riff principali sono molto semplici dal punto di vista vocale e mi viene la pelle d’oca quando canto… anche la chitarra solista di Arild degli Obliteration… e persino l’ultimo riff quando ritornano le chitarre dell’intro. Haha. Non voglio che finisca mai, praticamente.
Considerando le vostre band principali, quanto tempo dedicherete al progetto Coffin Storm?
Ebbene, tutti noi abbiamo degli impegni che non avevamo 30 anni fa. Il vantaggio è che abbiamo già un sacco di materiale e che siamo solo due persone che devono incontrarsi per buttare giù delle canzoni. Sarebbe più difficile far incontrare stabilmente quattro cinquantenni. Non abbiamo fretta, ma abbiamo già realizzato diverse canzoni dopo aver registrato l’album. Per noi è abbastanza facile creare materiale per questo tipo di musica, poiché la nostra attenzione è rivolta ai riff pesanti e a nulla che sia veloce o tecnico. Ci piace semplicemente suonare.
Sarà possibile vedervi dal vivo un giorno?
No, e questo è un altro motivo per cui possiamo essere molto produttivi. La prossima volta che ci incontreremo sarà per fare musica, non per suonare cose vecchie.
La chiusura è per te, vuoi mandare un messaggio ai vostri fan?
Non penso che abbiamo fan, ma ringrazio le persone che compreranno il nostro album.

Classic metal, thrash metal, doom metal or just Kolbotn metal?
If you mean Coffin Storm then all of it. Personally I sort of started out with thrash metal… then doom… then I started to appreciate more classic metal when I got older.
What is your first metal-related memory in Kolbotn?
It depends. If you can call Kiss metal, I remember putting a cassette player in front of the speakers at my friend’s house to record “Alive II”. That was the last year of kindergarten 79/80. After that I have good memories of an older guy who walked around with a boom box and played metal while we were playing football in the school yard. Some years later his band played with Darkthrone at the local cinema. Also I have an early memory of buying the “Metal Killers” compilation on cassette and hearing “Fast As a Shark” for the first time.
Is it wrong to consider Coffin Storm a continuation of Lamented Souls?
Not completely as me and Bestial Tormentor made all the music for both bands. But I think we realised that Lamented Souls will not get back together anytime soon. Our last rehearsal was for a show 11 years ago. So the two of us just wanted to play together again and started out playing guitar once a week. I had a lot of material for Lamented Souls but we didn’t use any it. We made new stuff,and much is more slow/mid tempo thrash than classic doom. The song “Arcana Rising” however, is a song we made a long time ago intended for Lamented Souls. I have an instrumental version from 2008 I think. And we were eager to hear Fenriz’ vocals on it.
How did Fenriz get involved in the band?
He heard a recording we had done at the rehearsal place. And then Bestial Tormentor asked if he wanted to sing.
I think “Arcana Rising” has different levels of perception. It seems like a simple, low-fi record, but as you listen it grows and you can perceive more and more sonic nuances. Is this intentional or did you plug in the jacks and start playing?
I think you are right.I wanted it to sound very raw and rehearsal place/live-like. But at the same time there are loads of things happening and different guitars play different things. It’s not a live band so we allow ourselves to cheat with having 6 guitars on top of eachother. But not to cheat in a way that makes it lifeless… Like to clean up all the tracks and compress the hell out of them and use click track, copy/paste. To all of us perfection is about imperfection… that you can hear the musicians feelings or struggles through the recording. I am not saying that this is a perfect album to me but I am quite satisfied with the overall feeling.
I think “Open the Gallows” is the manifesto song of this album, do you agree with me?
Well thank you as it is the only song that is mainly mine! The plan was actually to make an instrumental. I have always loved those long Metallica ones… “Orion”/”Call of Cthulhu”. But we decided pretty soon to have vocals on it after all which was the right decision. The main riffs are very vocal friendly and I get goosebumps from the singing… also the guitar lead from Arild from Obliteration… and even the last riff when the intro guitars return. Haha.I don’t want it to end basically.
Considering your main bands, how much time will you dedicate to the Coffin Storm project?
Well we all have obligations we didn’t have 30 years ago. The advantage is that we already have loads of material and that we are only two people who have to meet to make songs. It would be more difficult to make four 50 year old guys meet on a steady basis. We are not rushing though but we have made several songs after we recorded the album. This type of music is quite easy for us to create stuff for as the focus is on heavy riffs and nothing that is fast or technical. We just enjoy playing.
Will it be possible to see you live one day?
No and that’s another reason that we might be more productive. When we first meet it will be to make music, not to play old stuff.
Closing is yours, do you want to send a message to your fans?
I don’t think we have any fans but thanks to the people who buy our album.
